  • Over the years "Jugalbandis" seem to have lost their true meaning and charm. It is commonly argued that such collaborations fail because one artiste does not truly know, understand or appreciate the music of the other.
    More often than not, we found that at such attempts the artistes simply came on stage, sometimes never having met before, and expect some magic to happen, based simply on the premise that their respective expertise and taleem would carry them through. So typically one artiste would play or perform his or her part for a cycle or two, then stop playing altogether while the other artiste "did his or her thing" and then pick up where he or she left off. The final result then was simply two distinct forms of music being played on the same stage but never truly blending to create something beautiful, original and new, and thus most unsatisfying.
    But we did not want to give up the attempt, so at our recent CUSP festival in Chennai we invited four young artistes to work together and see if they could create something special. To make things work we urged them to start conversing and thinking about the music with each other weeks before the actual event. We also ensured that they spend at least two days together in rehearsals and figure out how to make the music work organically. We specifically identified the wonderful young musicians Ramana Balachandhran, Abhishek Borkar, Tejovrush Joshi and Praveen Sparsh as the artistes because we sensed they would approach the music with an open mind and not come encumbered with egos and the baggage of their respective art forms.
    The resulting performance, we think, worked. Watch this video and judge for yourself. Let us know in the comments section below your honest opinion. Please remember to be polite and give us constructive criticism.
    Enjoy.

    One of the best performances I have heard . Usually whenever a carnatic musician and a Hindustani musician play together each style stands out too boldy . However this time I felt it was a perfect blend . Truly beautiful.

    "young musicians.... with an open mind & not come encumbered with egos and baggage of their respective art forms" is the clincher here. That open mind shows how well and hard the foursome worked to blend their music to create something spectacular - soothing and melodious, without overt flourishes". I loved the understated elegance of this experiment. The mridamgam & tabla were particularly good. Young & bold should be your theme for the future too - putting brilliant musicians with an open mind together into one place for a few days always results in magic. CONGRATS

      Thank you Naresh Sadasivan for your insightful comments. This is precisely why we chose to work with young artistes. We feared that older artistes would be too set in their ways and less willing to make adjustments or be more accommodating of each other. Now that we believe this experiment worked, we do hope to have more such collaborations once the current situation eases.

    A real Jugalbandi, indeed , where the artists complement one another and try creating a harmonious musical experience for the audience , despite their different repertoire.
    Quite restrained performance by all the four musicians. The Saraswati Veena & Sarod give a perfect South-North experiences beautifully blended together.
    What a treat it would have been for people who were present at the live concert !

    Beautiful! The performances blended very well. All the artists have adapted and played really well, also in a challenging 7-beat cycle. I think doing jugalbandis this way will actually enable each artist to truly understand the other system's music, we saw many glimpses of that in this performance. Would definitely like to hear more such performances!

    Thanks FEA.. No body has tried pairing Veena with Sarod in recent times and no better option than the young artists who are always inquisitive.

An honest effort to showcase the beauty of both schools without compromising the integrity of either tradition has produced a truly captivating performance. Hope to see more artistic innovation in spite of any unhelpful negativity.

      very interesting question sir. I am not technically well equipped on the raga nuances, but if the two ragas are indeed different, it seems that Ramana is rendering 'more' of KD and 'less ' of Abheri....

      Arijit Bose, not for a while. The Covid 19 lockdown has immensely slowed down the process of editing and uploading our videos. The concert featuring Waseembhai happened after the Cusp Festival. And there’s still a large backlog of videos from this festival to upload first before we get to Waseembhai’s videos.

    Why does the Sarod player have long nails on his left hand? Does this help with his playing?

    • @FirstEditionArtsChannel
      @FirstEditionArtsChannel  Před 4 lety +9

      There are no frets on this instrument, so it cannot be played like a typical fretted instrument. Furthermore the fingerboard is a metal surface behind which the instrument is hollow and thus adds to its unique resonance and sound. If he were to play it with the skin of his fingers, the sound would be dampened or muted. Nails being a hard texture bring out the clarity of the sound and the accuracy of the notes. We hope this answers your question.
