The daughter calling her mum cuckoo, is very telling of how much of a mask mum had worn. Then when she takes it off, everyone thinks she is crazy.
I separated from my daughters' dads, but always remained on best of terms with them. I never put them down in front of their daughters, but I would support my daughters when their dads failed them. However, when they each turned 18, I told them that I will no longer be talking to their fathers. My younger one, especially, found it tough as she had thought her parents had been best friends. When I explained to her some of the things he had done, she understood. But now she refuses to let me defend him.
Both my daughters (and my mum) have told me to stopping defending them as the girls are grown, and it's unnecessary any more.
I still would have done it that way as it's not fair on children to be caught in the middle of parents' fights. Also, as adults, they knew their fathers and could discuss things without taking it personally.
