    I agree that the learning curve for Power BI is less steep for excel users than Tableau. I also agree that Tableau visualizations are more mature; Tableau has been around longer, allowing more options and detail changes that users have thought out and requested over time. For example, Tableau has a built-in out of the box forecasting option that takes data history and applies statistically significant benchmarks to display forecasted results on line and bar charts. Power BI visualizations are not far behind. Great Vid!

    Great video Avi - As a data scientist I work with both tools frequently. Power BI seems to have significantly better integration with python and R than Tableau. It has a built in kernel while tableau requires that you use the kernel from your local computer. You may have made a video on this already, but I would be very interested in some content around these integrations.

    I’ve got a B.I. salesclerk as a student and, when we watched this video, she has pointed out these following words:
    “In my opinion both tools are really friendly to the final users. The visualization is easy to create and to understand how it was made. However, when we talk about settings and formulas, Power BI shows a difficult way to do this, while Tableau is easier, and it doesn’t demand any code line.”

      @PowerBIPro  Před 5 lety

      Hmmm...I usually say use the tool that feels best to you. Power BI and Tableau are both great tools and part of the new generation of Self-Service BI. You really cannot go wrong with either one.
      As an Excel User stepping into Power BI, I found it easier to understand the Formula Language as it;s very Excel like (SUM, AVG, MIN, MAX etc.) but of course what makes it amazing is it's incredible depth. The DAX Formula language is incredibly powerful and I have enjoyed that journey. There is a link for Tutorial below for those just getting started.

    Brilliant - absolutely agree. I am a Power BI user and sit next to a Tableau user at work. We both agree that the visualisation in Tableau is much slicker than PBI - but PBI has much better data modelling capabilities.
    I'll also add another point on cost. Tableau - at least in the UK - is very expensive to buy and maintain. Power BI basically has no entry costs, you can get started on the full version of desktop for free. It's only when you start to share reports efficiently through PBI service that it starts to cost money.

    I worked with tableau when it's already feature filled (till date) I've been working with PBI (almost) since the beginning and as of today, it has matured a lot and pretty much kicked tableau hard!
    I say PBI is a definite winner *now* because 1. pricing models, 2. incoming modifiable visuals and themes, 3. Powerful, easy data shaping and modeling, m/dax editing, 4. monthly releases, 5. from the 3rd party visual support to the MS, they are all serious about every single issue!
    I'd be happy to work with tableau again without any bias but Power BI is proving itself impressively by catching up within couple of years which took tableau almost a decade!

    • @WordPressU
      @WordPressU Před 4 lety

      I think this has to be an ongoing analysis because neither specialize in any industry or function of data science yet (they pretty much present the organization of data into information but no predictive modeling - so the real analysis happens outside of these tools)...Tableau once enjoyed market domination and focused on gaining new customers as the main competitive advantage however we now see them focusing on customer retention which has revolutionized their pricing model, releases and proprietary ledges.

      @fennsk Před 6 lety

      Tableau recently changed their pricing: www.tableau.com/pricing/teams-orgs
      Now cheapest for Tableau Server in organizations that have > 100 audience members ($12/month for each end user). $70/months for developers. Also, don't forget that Tableau Public is still free for uses with non-proprietary data. I love using it to analyze data around interests of mine for fun and share the interactive versions on social media.
      I'm unclear on the total cost of ownership for Power BI if you use it as a presentation layer, instead of Avi's proposed approach of shaping in the MS ecosystem (though Prep or Alteryx could also do that work) and then present in Tableau. Personally, I prefer load a very granular data source into Tableau and do the vast majority of my work there, which allows me to pivot smoothly to any follow-up questions from my audience.

    Hi Avil, I agree with the winner factors for PBI However, there is a limitation process high volume of data with Power BI vs Tableau: incremental load. That is a feature in the backlog, but so far you need to reload all the data (ex: 2-year sales) every time you need to add or update data in your PWI repository. IMHO it should be a factor to compare. thanks

    All these Data Model features are counter-productive. So what happens when the Company was using Power Bi Data Models and later on decides to use a different platform? Data Models are best done in SQL side, not in a BI tool.

    • @jaeen7665
      @jaeen7665 Před 2 lety +1

      While your statement is true, one thing to consider is many companies don't want analysts poking around in SQL. My company, only the data engineers have access on the SQL side. So if I want a model on the SQL side I have to put in a request the engineering, where it'll be prioritized and likely backlogged. If I have a short turnaround on an ask, I need to be able to quickly model the data without waiting for an engineering request.

    • @channelino24

      Good sign for the industry - seems these two titans would certainly go back and forth and spurring innovation.
      My overall take is that the industry is big enough to support multiple players. #1 or #2 is a matter of semantics. Organizations would need to evaluate what fits them best.
      I tend to work with business groups who are heavy in Excel and for them, I feel Power BI is a natural choice given the multiple integration points between these (covered well in Olaf's Video czcams.com/video/Zxd0FqrZf58/video.html)

    In my view, be expert in one tool - Qlik, Tableau or Power BI. But you should be familiar with all three. If you switch jobs, you are familiar with any tool that new company is using.
    But to those who are new to BI tools, my advice is to start with Power BI. Because PBI is part of office 365 and will be and is available everywhere. So high chances are you will have to use it in most of the jobs you land. Companies are not gonna buy Tableau or Qlik only because if you are expert in it or you like it.

      If you start out, be expert in one tool. But as an experienced BI professional you really need to know all tools. It's easy anyway: they all use the same principles, only in a slightly different format. As an architect it would be a shame to be expert in one tool, as that is what you will converge all your projects to, even if other tools would be better for that particular case.
      You can't chose an overall 'winner' as it highly depends on the situation. Still a nice comparison to watch and see someones opinion.

    Desktop Power BI has no Print/save as option - must do print screen. Once uploaded/online you can print/save 1 page at a time to PDF or export (PBIX max 15 pages) to PowerPoint. Landscape only, PowerPoint export is graphic of Power BI "page" - quality not really to be compared with PDF. Tableau does allow export to/save as PDF.
    Other than that... I "inherited" Power BI just under a month ago when another employee in our department left. Already feel comfortable designing/using the application. Have been working with Tableau well over 6 months, not as "friendly" as Power BI - IMO.

      As of now, Power BI Desktop has save as and print options. Also export to PDF. It Works perfectly. However. Why on earth would you want a PDF of a report? For historical data you have your DWH, for recent and real time data you have your interactive reports on mobile, touchscreen, PC or what not, hosted in the cloud.

    Hi Avi, can Power Bi (power query) replace MS Access? I use Access alot to join several tables which also allows you to do SQL queries. I found this harder to do in PowerBi. I feel PowerQuery is quite limited in creating queries I can normally create in Access. I am told that PowerBi is Access on steriods but it seems to me that it's a bit more challenging to create complex joins in PowerBi than doing them in Access. Thanks.

    Surely the best place to build your
    Data model is within your SQL server environment using both tools to only perform modelling where needed.
    Power BI's biggest weakness is the distribution model. Given the difference in cost to using entirely pro licences versus a small number of these and the power bi server model, if easier for many smaller companies to go down the former route. This then runs the risk of the wider company community to develop reports of varying quality and taking control away from the central BI team, where they exist.

    • @PowerBIPro
      @PowerBIPro  Před 6 lety

      Gordon,
      I am working with a company right now that is using Power BI but decided to still build the warehouse in SQL. But users still complain that any requested changes (new columns, new calculations) take months to be delivered. Power BI can show a way where these business users can self serve themselves. And IT is not overwhelmed by requests since they can choose to only work on the "Winners" from the Self-Service BI arena - ideas that were implemented by Business Users already and are successfully being used. Otherwise IT ends up with 1000 different things that business users tend to all but not everything gets used.

    I compared 2 years ago Qlik, Power BI and Tableau. Loved Tableau intuitive and beautifull visualisations. Qlik was SOLID (not sexy), this was the one we were using in a large enterprise setup and it was great but a bit boring. Power BI ranked last, simple things like formatting numbers was not (fully) available. I did predict that with Microsofts power behind it it would leap forward. It did. I don't think that they will ever surpass Tableau on visualisation, all the other stuff ... sure, done or in progress.

    • @PowerBIPro
      @PowerBIPro  Před 6 lety

      Sven, good analysis. Yes, Power BI has taken such a different path even with the visualization. With Open Sourcing their SDK and essentially creating a marketplace with Custom Visuals (paid and free). They might be into something there. But yeah, each path has it's pros and cons.
      I almost feel like they cater to different audiences. I talk to some Tableau users who would never even consider Power BI. Then I meet Power BI users who couldn't be happier :-)
      I do feel there is space in the BI industry for both tools.

      Fred...great question. That is currently not possible, but that's just because Microsoft has not opened that option. Technically there should not be any barrier. If you want to use Tableau on top of PowerBI, it means that you want the PowerBI data model and the Tableau visualization. You can create a powerPivot model, in Excel, which is EXACTLY the same as a PowerBI model. And you can try to plug tableau on top of the Power Pivot model. If you have SharePoint on prem you might be able to host your PowerPivot on SP and access it from Tableau.

    There is actually much more to add to this subject besides the fact that "Tableau Prep" is now on the market... here are a couple points missed on this, al I'm sharing is based on a POC I did comparing Tableau VS PowerBI and I received help from both companies for pricing models and troubleshoot:
    1) Community: Tableau has much more years in the market, therefore the community is big, it's easy to find solutions to many problems.
    2) Online help & product refinement: Tableau has the advantage, many of the key functionalities I was looking for came way after I completed after the POC.
    3) Server: Tableau Server it's been in the market for a long time and it's well refined, keeps evolving, is Linux compatible (hence, cheaper to have a server).
    4) Pricing server models: Tableau's server pricing models are easy to digest by non tech people, are easy to scale and keep evolving and include license for high availability and Testing.
    5) Price: For tiny to medium size companies it think PowerBI wins until you need manage servers and find people with previous experience in the tool.
    6) Setup: I think is much easier to start creating visualizations with Tableau, you just install the desktop app and deploy to the server (if there is one) for PowerBI is much more complicated and require more than 1 applciation.
    7) Intuitiveness: Tableau is much much easier to understand for new users.
    8) Official training: Both have official training but Tableau has a lot of official video tutorials, downloadable materials and easy to find the topic you are looking for.
    9) Maintaining and structuring a server: Here I don't have the full picture of power BI but I remember that anyone can add a new element to a dashboard and feels a little bit "over collaborative", as a server administrator Tableau is very, very easy to find and manage all kind of objects.
    10) Server and 3rd party ecosystems: Tableau as long term viz king has plenty of other 3rd party applications completely, has extensions (anyone can build extensions for Tableau) and is compatible with some ETL tools that are multi platform and is AWS friendly.
    These are things that makes you think twice from the perspective of a server administrator or someone that is in charge of making this the reporting platform for a company.

    • @PowerBIPro
      @PowerBIPro  Před 6 lety

      They already have a terrific tool (Excel) - which is feature packed and customizable to Nth degree.
      I usually like to wield these two visualization tool in combination. And that combo is hard to beat, IMHO :-)

    Many thanks for your insights Avi. I only work with Power BI. On this product I am very disappointed from a perspective of Internal Control. If you write DAX-Code for a visualization that will be periodically refreshed, on that moment a control object in Power BI is issued. First of all this means that you should be able to secure the links between all systems so you can cross check all historic data and all new data. Arguments that this should be covered in a DWH or in the sources systems are not right, because the content of the DAX-Code is leading for the control object and should be covered in Power BI Service. At this moment it just is not possible. When a change is being made in one of the sources tables that touches the content of the DAX-Code, all historic data is falling to pieces in the visualizations in Power BI Service. Second of all you should be able to start from a Business Process Management-Model (BPM) so you can align with the business. Because of the complexity of the information-chain it is very important to be able to structure the separation of powers into the entire process. Step by step two different aspects should be checked in the entire process: 1 Historic continuity 2. Formula development (from the source files to a DWH and into Power BI, data can be developed to the final specifications into Power BI). As far as I have worked with Flow, this product does not provide this functionality, which is crucial for giving assurance of the quality of the process and the information to the clients via row level security). From a technical point of view this could be solved by implementing parts of Blockchain tech in combination with a BPM into Power BI. As long as they don’t, knowledgeable controllers will reject this product because you cannot give assurance on processes from different perspectives as I have explained above.

      The best way to get smart is to put some dumb sh*t on CZcams and wait for the smart comments to roll in. Gunson1, thanks, that is very insightful. Let me think about it...
      I tried to look into Marketshare but hard to find a good report. For one, this market can be measured in so many different ways. This www.datanyze.com/market-share/business-intelligence/tableau-market-share lists Tableau Market Share as 18% and Power BI as 10%.
      But then the Power BI Technology is also inside Microsoft Excel (in form of Power Pivot/ Power Query), is that being counted?
      Which brings me to your second point, learning curve.
      For me, this was no contest. Coming from an Excel background, I took to Power BI like fish to water. And Microsoft has kept that up. There are so many ways in which Excel + Power BI is a great story (See czcams.com/video/Zxd0FqrZf58/video.html )
      My general advice for companies steeped in Microsoft Excel is to look at Power BI first.

    It syncs seamlessly with one drive and Azure so there is no need for a tableau server.
    Visuals can be aligned and spread out evenly just like MS Access forms
    What I like about Tableau ;
    Screen resolution is better - visuals appear cleaner
    Has a SQL type interface
    Filters are much better
    as far as data modeling.. I don't believe this should be done at the visualization phase or at least it should be kept to a minimum. If you can't write a SQL statement, you have no business in data modeling.I create views and tables at the SQL server /Oracle side- and use them to serve my visuals. The advantage here is that I can use one source of truth for both Power BI and Tableau.
    I suppose the killer for me is that Power BI desktop is free .. so if you are just after a learning experience then just download it and install .however.to use from the cloud you will need to pay :-(
    After all that .. true visualisation is done with Python and Jupyter Notebook .. not these mickey mouse tools .

      Same here I worked with QlickView and PowerBI. Beside the ability to show different presentation options there is nothing Tableau.

    I tried both. As a novice user Tableau blows Power BI out of the water. But if I learned the complicated programming stuff I might see it differently. For novice users I would only recommend Tableau as Power BI is way to complicated to get into and too expensive for basic functions you would want to have while Tableau is still free.

      Hey Jurij,
      Yes, for the visualization side Tableau does feel easy to start. It's very well designed.
      For the heavier lifting - cleaning your data, defining calculations/KPIs I prefer Power BI.
      Do tell me more about your comment on Tableau being free and Power BI being expensive though?!
      The way I see it - Power BI Desktop is completely free download with no restrictions and your data stays completely private.
      The only free option Tableau has is the Tableau Public but that has sever restrictions
      - Data sources you can connect to
      - Number of Data Rows you can bring in
      - Makes your Dataset Public and Accessible to Everyone in the World
      Here's the quote from the Tableau Public page
      "You should not publish confidential data that you want to keep private,
      like your company’s sales plan or your personal financial information.
      Once it is posted you should expect that data to be no longer private."

      For me one is free and the other is not. Because as a novice user I want to use it like Google Docs and share my stuff online. When I used Power BI all the sharing options I had in the free version of Tableau were only available in a paid version of Power BI. But it all depends on use. I think that if I worked for some company then not being able to upload charts online and share them easily wouldn't be a problem at all. As it is Power BI is just not for a novice user with my needs.
      So I, and most people I think, would say: For novice users Tableau is recommended. Once you learn some complicated calculations and programming you can pick and choose and maybe even go open source or some much more complicated software.

    How do you blend data in PowerBI? I have a many-to-many situation that PowerBI won't join.

      You need to create a dummy column to do the join , if it does not exist already

      +Guy Conklin thanks for your feedback. Yes, in some way the best tool is the one that works for you. I'm head over heels in love with Power BI. I do respect Tableau though and can see where Business Objects would also have its place.

    Great high-level comparison! We've been doing our own comparison based on our client base (czcams.com/play/PLaBXHxGryzNOBGtna4GfFa3jTZR2IEmcK.html). We agree with your point #1 since Tableau continues to spend a ton of research to make their UI intuitive to regular business users (they research extensively before deciding to incorporate a new feature, and then they research and experiment extensively again where and how to make that feature available - bottom line, it's a sleek and ease-to-use UI). Your points #2 and 3 aren't very relevant in our client base since most of the data preparation is done with data warehousing. We diverge a bit with your #4 because we think that both products have pros and cons and it's a wash in the near future. However, we agree that PBI is becoming more well integrated with the Microsoft ecosystem and we expect it to have a definite edge for those heavily invested in the Microsoft stack. Finally, yes to #5 - that's why we support both products! Great job!

    Qlik sense > Tableau + Power BI
    DESIGN is not about the looks, it's about the experience. The Associative experience of Qlik makes user explore data and do business discovery at the speed of thought.
    A business user starts loving Qlik after few clicks.
    You fall in love at first sight.

      What if we were able to disconnect the "Visualization" tool with the Data Modeling tool. Let's get the freedom to build our data model in the tools we like - Excel (Yes, the modern Excel packs a punch), Power BI or one of the Enterprise Level Options...
      And then let users choose the visualization tool that works best. It could be Excel, Power BI, Tableau, Qliksense or any of the other tools.

    • @shoaibahmedkhan9676
      @shoaibahmedkhan9676 Před 6 lety

      I used to use Qlik in my last job but I am using Power BI now too in my current job.
      For a beginner, yes it's easy to transform data in excel but the transformation options are limited. You can do magics in terms of ETL with Qlik or maybe Power BI ( i am not expert in PBI). What about transforming data involving more than 2 million rows? Here the excel starts suffering specially if there are sumifs and all.
      Power Query is very good for beginners - all options you can see in the ribbon.
      But when it comes to advance transformations, Qlik Scripting is very mature. Also you can load huge data very fast with QVDs. Like two million rows from Qvd takes only couple of seconds to load.

      Data modeling in Excel? Ha, no thanks. We can do all of this in one product, which by the way is spelled "Qlik Sense". It is so much more than a "visualization" tool as you say. Happy to demo it for you if you'd like. :)
