Jack Lucas enlisted into the marine Corp at 14 years old when he forged his mother’s signature on the forms. He fought in the pacific theatre and during a confrontation on Iwo Jima was caught in an ambush by Japanese soldiers. While returning fire his gun jammed and as he looked down to fix it noticed 2 grenades laying in the fox hole he was in. Without thinking he jumped onto both grenades and absorbed the blast of one as the other failed to go off. He was found later by another squad that noticed him moving and was sent back for medical treatment. He received the Medal of Honor in 1945 and returned back to highschool at the age of 17. Just wanted to share another story of a soldier throwing down his life for his allies
Right a kid survived a grenade blast? Where did you get that story from
@@RandomGuy-ej9gr it happened. It depends on the power of the explosive angle of the grenade and if something absorbed the shock from the blast. Btw here is an article about him from the national ww2 museum.

ORM ! Many British and Commonwealth sons, brothers and fathers lost their lives in the fight to defend Hong Kong. As a Hong Konger, I can assure you that their ultimate sacrifice is forever remembered. Alas, our days as a British Dependent Territory have since ended, and with that the sustained erosion of the Hong Kong cultural identity by the communist party continues to this day.
Perhaps one day we shall once again stand united as Hong Kong citizens, proud members of the Commonwealth. I hope that day comes before 2047.

RANDOM FACT:
During WWI, this also happened, During the Battle of the Somme
His name was William Frederick McFadzean (36th Ulster regiment)
On 1 July 1916, near Thiepval Wood, private McFadzean stood in a crowded concentration trench where a box of bombs was being opened for distribution prior to an attack. The Box fell down into the trench and two of the safety pins fell out. Instantly realising the danger to his comrades, the private threw himself on top of the bombs which exploded instantly, blowing him to pieces, but injured only one other man. He fully understood the danger but gave his life for his comrades without a moment's hesitation.
He also received a Victoria Cross for the act.

I live in Winnipeg and there's a section of the city called the Osborne village in his memory. I'm so happy to see people r now recognizing the Canadian's sacrifice in both world wars
Alistair Games there are always people who recognise the selfless actions of soldiers from all factions during wars, especially the lesser known factions. Anzacs, Canadians, indians and many more
Old st. Vital gang
Different Canadian soldier it was named after
Osborne Village derives its name from Osborne Street (Winnipeg Route 62), which runs through the centre of the village area. Osborne Street was named after Lieutenant Colonel William Osborne Smith (1831-1887) the first commanding officer of Military District 10, which included the City of Winnipeg.
On behalf of many HKers, thank you for your sacrifice, we will remember and won't let your sacrifice be in vain.
As a kid growing up in Hong Kong , we never get to learn this from school. Respect to all protected us and those who sacrificed.
Because it could be considered foreign propaganda that would bring praise to a government or people other than your own.
They want you to forget so you dont go looking into stuff like nanjing then hating the Japanese
slice n dice it is the other way around in HK, the current government wants us to get into blind patriotism to China
Because then the Chinese comminuist government can't keep up the lie as portraying themselves the hero who did all the fighting while in reality it was the KMD in mainland and Commonwealth British troops who defended Hong Kong with blood and tears. Shame the current government is lap dog to China and forgot who actually built and defended Hong Kong.

I lived in Hong Kong for years, I remember the actual spot where John Osborne fell is marked by a cairn made of bricks painted white. It's not far from a commemorative plaque. It's in the middle of the bush, quite though to find. He was a true hero! Canada's first Victoria Cross of ww2. Amazing video, thank you so much for sharing!
Considering they were fighting against the Japanese, and that they lost after all... I think he was simply the smartest out of people present there. If you read about some of the things that were done to prisoners, death sounds like a nice alternative.
kugrond is wait how did they know that the Japanese will lose.
Is like saying I know the future.
1. He didnt know that they would lose 2. How should they have known what japanese do with prisoners????
Luke Skywalker that’s exactly what I said
@@gigachad-jh1dh But it was obvious they would loose. It was Hong Kong , so far from any reinforcments , UK was busy with germany , and Japan was in its strongest . A small colony garnison didnt stand a chance
washi moshi They meant that the British and colonial forces would lose.
Ben Salomon, the american dentist who killed 98 or more japanese while fatally wounded and by himself. He was bayoneted 30 times before he died, and was serving as a rear guard for wounded soldiers
by the way, for those that can't find him, his last name is Salomon, not Solomon :-)
Are you sure he wasn't stabbed 30 times after he died by enraged japanese?
Dissident101 Unlikely - strangely the Japanese seemed to have huge amounts of respect for enemy combatants who take them on when all seems lost, who they see as heroes.
Counter that with their utterly appalling treatment of most enemy combatants and civilians
They'd probably have seen this guy as incredibly brave, and treated him as such.
I highly doubt it was you're very very very unlikely to survive 30 bayonet stabs for any duration of time. That and the body count makes this sound otherworldly and cheapens his sacrifice as it's just not believable anymore.
Dissident101 mircles happen

I am from Hong Kong, this is the first time I heard this history, respect to John Robert Osborn for satisfying his life for my homeland.
One of my friends is related to a man who did something similar like this. It was the battle of Iwo Jima, 1942. Someone threw a grenade into his trench. Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone (Marines) jumped right onto the grenade, and died at 28. He received the Medal of Honor. Respect these men and what they did for us to stay free another day
The battle of Iwo Jima was fought in 1945
I didn’t know Canada went to Hong Kong during world war 2
Canada did more in WW1&WW2 Than the U.S.A, how this is not common knowledge amazes me.

Aiden he said town not far. Probably steinbach or lorette, beausejour. Somewhere like that. I live in Winnipeg too. Remember seeing commercials for the armed forces about him
When I lived in Spokane Washington, my boss and I started talking about WW2 one day.
Turns out, a local farmer boy volunteered and served in the European front. He was escorting a group of young children in Holland (I think, been a long time) when a SOB SS officer threw a live grenade at the group of tightly packed kids.
The kids knew almost no english, so he did the only thing possible and threw his body onto the grenade.
He died instantly, no kids died (only minor shrapnel wounds).
There is a street named after him in Spokane Washington.
In Holland(?) there is a life sized statute in memory of his brave sacrifice.
Just a small town farmer boy who gave his life to save children and complete strangers.
May he RIP.
Engin Most unnecessary point, this clearly wasn't his/her intention...it's not about the German who threw the grenade at children but about the man who gave his life to save them.

Of course there were many cases of soldiers jumping on a grenade. But many of those cases were sadly never recorded or just got lost in time. But anyway. Everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice should be honored! The known and unknown :)
Guess we can take him as a representation of all unknown heroes alike.
I agree.
We can just NOT pull out the safety pin, get a job as a soldier and jump on the grenade. Lol.
the most heroic one was a soldier was standing next to the top of the stairs, a Taliban threw a grenade into the room, with him and his squad in it, all he had to do was jump down the stairs, and with a few bruises and broken bones, would have lived, but instead he threw himself onto the grenade to stop it from killing his squadmates, most cases like this the person would have died, either way, this case he had a chance to survive, but instead took the gernade to save his comrades, that. that is a true hero
Isnt that why there's that unknown soldier monument at Washington? Or am I just being stupid?

A similar thing happened in Iwo Jima. I remember seeing it on History Channel.
There was an American, who was 16 or 17 who had lied his way into the military. He was found out, but he had done his duties so well that they let him stay. Whilst in battle, he dived on a grenade, similarly to Osborne, which saved 5 lives. Unlike Osborne however, he miraculously survived it, and would return home.

reviewer 1032 For them it was, they murdered enemies who had murdered many of their owns and served their country until their death. Not a thinking I support but you can't disagree with the fact that their are many people, foremost americans, who live by that to this day. It's not honorable murdering anyone, no matter what they have done, you're still a murderer which is nothing anyone should aspire to be.

If you kill a killer, the number of killers in the world remains the same. But if you kill a lot of killers, then the number drops a ton, and the world is a better place.
