After arriving on Tobago the previous night, I got up early to go on an all-out breakfast food tour of the island!
My friend David, and I would be exploring Crown Point on the southern tip of the island. We’d be starting with some doubles at Debe Delights!
    ⚽️BOL: / bol.football
    👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: teespring.com/stores/davids-b...
They sell doubles, aloo pies, and cheese pies. I watched them fry up the baras. I’m always amazed at how quickly they cook!
They add chana, mango chutney, chadon beni, and roasted pepper to the bara.
The doubles were so tasty and savory. I loved the mango chutney and the roasted pepper. The chadon beni added a nice earthiness. We enjoyed them with some Solo cherry soda, which is customary with doubles.
Next was the crispy aloo pie and a baigan pie, or eggplant pie. They were beautiful and golden brown. I liked tje eggplant more than the aloo!
David and I picked up Jason and Candice on our way to get some coffee. Tobago seemed like an island paradise. There was a lot of colonial architecture.
We drove to The #1 Dirt Oven, where we met a woman named Angela. It was beautiful, cozy, and rustic. They had aloe plants outside. This place is as traditional as it gets!
The had enabel cups, calabash shell bowls, and even masks made from calabash. First, Angela brought us a soursop smoothie. I watched the cook make pancakes from cassava and coconut.
The smoothie was thick and sweet, and milky, and also contained cinnamon and nutmeg.
They also cooked potato hash, steamed bhaji, smoked herring, saltfish buljol, coconut bake, fried shark, jack fish, and more.
Angela grows lots of peppers but can’t handle them. She likes to experiment with the different ingredients. They have lots of pepper sauces!
They also have lots of unique knicknacks around, including maracas, masks, cricket bats, old-school typewriters from the 1960s, and a bit of coral from the reef.
We started with a bread platter of cassava pone, pumpkin bread with cranberry, and sweet bread. The cassava pone contained coconut and almost reminded me of banana bread.
The pumpkin bread contained flaxseeds and sunflower seeds as well as cranberries. It was fluffier and more neutral. It was fresh, smoky, and artisanal.
The sweet bread had a harder feel and denser texture. It also contained flax, sunflower seeds, and dried fruits, as well as vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sweet breads are essential in Tobago!
Then, we got some cassava flatbread, coconut bake, shark, and fry dry herring, smoked herring, bhaji, the saltfish buljol, and cocoa tea.
The cocoa tea was milky and flavorful! I loved that Angela grated some fresh cocoa on top.
The fry dry herring contained small bones and a slight breading. It was really nice!
The fried shark filet was very meaty and moist, and the coconut bake with pulled smoked herring was really flavorful. I also really liked the salted fish with the coconut bake, too!
The salted cod was better than the other fish. We added some salad and tamarind chutney to the crispy cassava-coconut flatbread, which blew me away. Everything was so fresh.
Adding a mix of everything on top was insane. I loved the papaya chutney, which also contained ginger, turmeric, tomato, and garlic.
Then, I tried the spicy chutney, which hit me right away! The cocoa tea cleansed my palate, and the roasted pepper chutney was maybe a 6 or 7 in terms of heat.
Breaking up everything and eating it with my hands was the best! Then, I saw where Angela has a guesthouse, garden, and is rebuilding the restaurant.

The cassava bread when made without coconut is the contribution of Trinidad and Tobago's original occupants -indigenous people. It was the bread which kept early settlers, the enslaved and the slave owners, alive in the early days of colonization in the Caribbean. Its found in all Caribbean islands. Have it with some ripe Avocado which has been lightly sprinkled with salt.

Best time to come to Tobago for food is during Heritage Festival. Your belly will burst going house to house and being fed all the best stuff. Whole suckling pig, so many stewed meats, ground provisions, breadfruit, roast fish, lobster, conchs, clay oven-baked breads. Heritage Festival is in October. So there is still time to plan your visit.

😋😋😋that last meal with the cocoa brought back memories of my grandmother. Everything you ate she used to make that. The cocoa with sticks of chocolate, cassava pone, sweet bread, herring, salt fish and bake....heaven, definitely heaven. Mouthwatering and the way you eat and explain everything, even more. Over the top.❤❤😋😋😉
Edit: the calabash, my grandmother had trees and used to make them. My uncle made the mortar, wooden scrubbing board for clothes and box ovens to put on the stove when baking. All for my grandmother. Good memories. Thank you.

In Trinidad every single one of the dishes featured in the Tobago video are all normal everyday foods, just like all the foods featured in the Trinidad videos. Our cuisine is very blended and not segregated by island - everybody, no matter their ethnicity or location eats as a Trinbagoinian. In fact I got a huge bout of nostalgia remembering helping my great grandmother (a Chinese-Trinbagonian) make bowls out of the calabashes. 🥰

Cassava pone and sweet bread is found in almost every bakery in Trinidad and Tobago. Of course some bakeries have a better product than others. But, a dirt oven imparts greater level of authentic flavour.

So happy to see all of this. Hopefully you were able to enjoy the offerings of the Breakfast Shed in Port-of-Spain. Other desserts; chilli billi, currant roll, black cake, guava cheese, coconut ice cream, tamarind balls, coconut drops, jub jub. Condiments; chow chow, kuchela and jams (any fruit). Other dishes; pastelles, paime, callaloo, macaroni pie, breadfruit oil down, corn meal coo coo, corn soup, barbeque pigtails. I mean at least introduce the man to a Royal Castle chicken sandwich. I would continue, but I've made myself hungry. Need to get into the kitchen. I will probably snack on preserved fruits later. Ital food this weekend.
    David is missing SO much.......

@@gabriellaboynes7042 he has been reading the comments because about 2 weeks ago he answered my comments. Just remember that it's what they planned for him, so don't blame him if he doesn't visit the places that we would like him to see and the foods we would like him to try. They could have started him in Trinidad with this kind of food to give him a little taste before going to Tobago. e.g. the cassava pone is quite different to the one sold at the Indian vendors in Trinidad. The one in Tobago is how I remember it. This is an improvement but why did they have to go to Tobago for him to eat this kind of food. Doubles again although it looked tasty. It is kind of showing a divide between Trinidad and Tobago, if you know what I mean, everything Indian in Trinidad and let's see what else in Tobago. I will make a final assessment after it is all over. And I hope Jason Peru and whoever is responsible for arranging this trip and itinerary is reading our comments because they should explain how they planned it. David is doing a great job and you can see how much he really loves and enjoys the different foods. Look, no knife, no fork and no spoon.
