  • Just want to see if you can drive normally in traffic within Thrill Drive despite questionable traffic AI.
I used the infinite timer cheat to disable the strict in-game timer.

Now I really want this hidden gem arcade game to have vrc world and car avatars with models, all sounds and animations all out.

I like how you were able to catch up to 2nd while going the speed limit
Someday when TD2 works fully I'd like to see the same thing attempted

Very interesting to watch this video of yours. You had managed to finish the whole race without getting "NETWORK ERROR: CALL ATTENDANT" error (or otherwise the infamous "Fatal Error - SHARC: Loop stack underflow" pop-up window that ruins your gameplay entirely; the only option is to close MAME emulator) that either sometimes or rarely happened in this game (as the case of mine).
Yeah, just like "walk in the park" in real life - you're casually polite (and cool) driving without too much worrying to win or lose the "illegal" drag race. The highway stage is truly heavy traffic, most notably the multiple cargo trucks (plus the nearby "NPC vehicles") that slow down a lot, making them annoying at some point.
I would also point out - the pedestrians, I have some theories (which either - you may agree or disagree) why they didn't showed up again in the future series (up until Crazy Streets: Thrill Drive in 2007):
    1. CPU performance issues that had been prevalent in the actual hardware (Konami Hornet/NWK-TR; as shown in the video). Dunno why it slowed down for real, but I guess we'll never know to this day (hence, being somewhat "mysterious").
    2. Really "worthless" to add them in the game; you cannot "ram/terminate" them and they'll just run or move away as being like "cheetahs" or something. Heck, the developers (Konami) at that time probably knew what's going on, and then eventually got scrapped/cancelled in the following years.
Maybe, that's why the OG Thrill Drive (1998) is kind of "special" for some people, and after that - the following sequels were never been the same.
    Anyways, great job man! 😊👍👍

Hi Tom! Thanks for the comment!
I guess the reason why they decided to take out the pedestrians is they probably seem to be more like filler rather than actual obstacles that you have to avoid (or else you would have been given a severe penalty if you did so), given that they can never be run over and simply run away from you when you try to do so, which is similar to what Driver and Driver 2 on the PlayStation did.
The reason why the Loop Stack Overflow error didn't show up (luckily) was because I ran the game on the current version of MAME which eliminated the issue. It was also evident on the videos I did on Racing Jam Chapter II which also didn't crash a single time unlike how it used to do in past versions of MAME. There's one video on my channel where I attempted to play Thrill Drive on MAME via RetroArch within EmuVR, which is currenly outdated (It's still on 0.251) and it crashed as soon as the race was about to start and I grew frustrated.

I had just come across a wiki article about the original Thrill Drive on the Konami fandom wiki, which states that a location test build of the game which I haven't found yet, allowed you to run over people and even knock motorcyclists off of their motorcycles which added up to the overall damage and bad habits, earning you the same bad driver rating as you normally did with crashing into traffic or driving off the cliff in the Japan stage. The feature however was completely taken out in the released build, likely due to the fact that they wanted to avoid any controversy sorrounding it, which likely would have resulted to become Mortal Kombat on wheels.
I also used BridgeM1 on Thrill Drive and discovered some unused sound files and voice overs such as screams from people and various lines from the female announcer that have been unused.
