On the rainy night of March 2nd, 1944, the overnight steam-power freight train 8017 from Battipaglia to Potenza, did not pass through the railway station at Balvano in southern Italy.
The station master there was not overly worried.
But later at 5:10 that morning, when one of the crewmen from the freight train staggered into the railway station, the Station Master knew something was seriously wrong.

History should NEVER be forgotten.
No matter how “ugly” it is.
Exactly, the libs are trying to erase history by not teaching it in schools. History is written by the victor, that's why we can't let the Democrats win anything anymore.
@@theairwaybat1830 both sides like to erase history if it doesnt fit their narrative, also not every piece of history can be taught in school for obvious reasons.

Oh yes, you don't even need to run coal for this to happen. The Southern Pacific comissioned some of the first "Cab Forward" style steam locomotives specifically because of this issue and they had already converted all the engines to oil burning.
They would run the locomotives backwards through certain tunnels after crew members nearly asphyxiated numerous times. Something every steam train nerd knows to watch out for.

Yes
if anything, the trains being disrupted is a direct result of the wars mussolini dragged the nation into.

Just a small correction: Both the Italian and the Austrian locomotive were attached in front of the freight wagons + The train did not-as shown-reach the end of the tunnel (which measures 1.7 km) but stopped halfway through. Anyways, I’m really looking forward to see more of these kind of videos in the future!
if the train was stuck halfway through and both locomotives were in the front why didnt the conductors die?
@@igoralecu6673
As far as I know, only the brakeman and one of the firemen survived
why did they have austrian locomotives in the first place?
@@hugopepe1722 Many Austrian locomotives were either handed over as compensation for war damage after WW1, or-as Italy’s railway network and train fleet got heavily extended by the fascist regime during the 1920s and 1930s-purchased by the government.
The freight train of the Balvano disaster was originally pulled by an electric engine, however it was replaced after 40 miles southeast of Naples at Battipaglia, as the following railway line wasn’t electrified.
