  • Karl Meltzer, a professional ultrarunner, has completed the Appalachian Trail in record time at the age of 48. What might take the average hiker up to 6 months to complete, Meltzer completed in 45 days, 22 hours, and 38 minutes. Here is how he did it.

    Hats off to this legend but to simply say that he has the speed record for the trail and that hikers tend to take up to 6 months while he did it in 45 days with out noting that those hikers are not supported and carrying everything they need. This guy has an entire team hauling whatever he needs and all he has to do is run the trail. This guy is a bad ass but his record needs an asterisk being that it was supported.

    People commenting and comparing his AT experience with a traditional thru hiker....You just cant. He is using the trail for a totally different type of hike/run. I also believe he/or the magazine who covered his run cant compare the two either. Apples and oranges.

      Fully agree. I'm a hiker. Not an ultra marathon guy. They are totally different. I can never understand why people think the other way is wrong somehow.... It's always the hikers complaining too. Ultra marathon runners never comment that everyone should do the trail faster.

    I consider sleeping in a van every night cheating, not just on the comfort factor, but on the time saved by not having to setup and breaking camp every day. Anyone who's done this challenge and camped out the whole time would be the true record holder in my book.

      So you are telling me there isnt a "support crew" for traiditonal us thru-hiker. Last time i checked there is trail angels, shelters to camp and get water/cook/us the bathroom and an abundance of stops to go into town for resupply. I challenge you to hike it with that 45lb pack and never use one of those shelters or toilets or pit stops for food and do it the bushcraft way

I thought that hiking was about enjoying yourself and the country and wildlife around you, taking in the views, meeting new people's, visiting new towns and sometimes if you are lucky making new friends for life, but there you go that's just me, maybe being miserable for 45 odd days is the way to go, I do hope not.

    the human body is designed for speed, agility and cardio endurance. primarily to escape order predators or to hunt other animals lower in the intellectual food chain. to those putting an asterisk on his accomplishment are dumb. there is almost no scenario that legitimately requires us humans to run for 40 + days. but we attempt these feats bc it seems possible; you miss the point by adding that he has a team who provides everything but the physical running aspect that he completes alone. stunts such as these along with the david goggins of the world allow us a glimpse in the human potential. it’s astonishing to witness and you never know when we might need to achieve such levels of endurance on a normal day to day scale one day.

    Look agree or disagree this is about human achievement and endurance . He isn't claiming to be the spokesperson for the AT or AMC. I still think if he had a 30lb pack on he would do the AT in two-three months or be capable of avg 30 mile days. People have there own goals in life . I am classic 10 mile a day scenic hiker but don't judge others for there passions.

    I imagine an interview: "So, Karl, was there anything you missed out there for that 45 days?" Reply: "Yes, the point."
    Look, this is an amazing achievement that took lots of training and work, but it simply isn't the main purpose of the Trail itself. To echo Mick B, thru-hikers and Trail lovers in general just don't care about this. The Appalachian Trail is an adventure scenario, not an obstacle course or track & field facility. Sponsored runners with constant tech and support are completely different animals than the self-supported, fun and nature loving, strategic hikers that make real memories out there. It's like speed-reading your way through the Lord of the Rings, or running through the Louvre looking at each piece for exactly five seconds. Sure it can be done, but that's not what the AT, PCT or any similar trail abroad were made for.

      oolon colluphid he didn't do this for trail hikers, he did it for the challenge and in the realm of the ultra community. Stop trying to force him into the bob Ross nature category of people and let him choose how he wants to run and live

    • @ooloncolluphid7904
      @ooloncolluphid7904 Před 7 lety +2

      I'm not forcing him into a category, I'm disqualifying him from one. He can run and live however he wants. But this will be remembered as a headline for non-enthusiasts. "He didn't do this for trail hikers" were your words. This will be forgotten soon.

    • @troy2286
      @troy2286 Před 6 lety +4

      Do honestly think someone whi ran over 2000 miles in less then 45 days on such a famous Trail will be forgotten? He didn't do this for other Hikers acceptance or approval. what do you mean it "wasn't intended for this".. I had no idea Trails had a set rulebook on how you can and can't complete them. He still completed It, just in his own way of challenging himself.. Because that was his goal and dream and his way of challenging himself.. the exact reason these trails exist.
