Why Jojo's Characters Went From Big to Small

  • Do you remember when jojo's characters were all built like they were on roids? Crazy to think that Josuke started out the same way but one random chapter, he suddenly starts looking like a somewhat normal guy. Which design do you prefer?

Jonathan should be swole. He could even have like a classic 1800s strongman/rugby build - which I would argue would look even better than the brick wall build he has originally.
Young Joseph pretty much looks like how he should, you can even tell as a decrepit man with "memory issues" he was always big, and Jotaro looks completely as he should in Part 4 and 6. Same with Josuke and Jolyene.

I get that having shoulders the size of your head is not really practical, but having all the guys look like their limbs are about to be ripped from their bodies by the wind isn't either. That's pretty much the vibe I got from part 8 designs. I'd say part 4 was a sweet spot, even though the characters were not huge, their bodies looked realistic. After all, being incredibly buff might not be equivalent with being manly, but having a well developed body is in no way unrealistic. So a teen with amazing genetics and a great motivation to be strong(like the hero who saved his life as a child) could very well have a well developed body, even if not to huge proportions.

Jonathan and Joseph need to be built like tanks, it's the power fantasy that they were designed for. It's jarring to see them very slender and thin, as their stories warranted having powerful builds. I feel as though the same isn't necessary for Jotaro, however. When he appears in part 4, at least in the anime, he is much slimmer. Though still tall, muscular, and imposing, Jotaro appears to be built more like a man of normal proportions, albeit naturally muscular.

I think it's also important to consider how when Araki started drawing JoJo, he was very much influenced by classical art, so the posing and body styles more closely resembled Greek and Roman statues. As he started becoming more interested in modern fashion not only did the bodies start slimming down to more closely match runway models, but the poses also shifted towards a different sort of elegance.
I feel like he's really started to hit his stride with the way he's developed his characters towards the end of JoJolion, and the group drawing from the JoJo Magazine issue 2 is one of my favourite--I especially love the modern styling of Jolyne. And while I slightly prefer Joseph's design from part 2, I think the new drawings of Jonathan are really, really cool. I'm just waiting for him to draw Speedwagon again after 30 years!

Having said that, I like Part 8 style Jonathon, Joseph, Jotaro and Josuke, it makes sense, having the bulky figures would clash with the style. Dude, wow, loved this video and your editing skill sets. Just amazing.
And truth be told, for me personally I think I love both. I enjoy peak physique but simultaneously enjoy the gradual shift and transition to portraying a more natural and model like JoJo. While the beauty standards are changing, to me, it feels like Araki has deviated from the popularity of big muscular men and allowed his style to grow with him. Idk, it feels like I’m just repeating some of what you said but I love both for many reasons.
However, I’d still love to see a display of an array of body types. I’d love to hopefully see a chapter in the future hoping for a mesh of showcasing characters with his old style and current one. Though, I’m not entirely sure how other readers may interpret that or if they would take a liking to seeing contrasting styles.

I like the idea that the art style is a lens through which reality is perceived, to the point that it can even make past events and characters look different. I just love that impressionist vibe where reality is just a suggestion of what the brain ultimately receives.
Perhaps we know Jonathan and Joseph as we know them simply because the bombasticism of the style in which they are rendered, are part of a kind of embellishment of their greatness that naturally comes from describing one's distant ancestors.

This is something that's needed more especially in this day and age where masculinity is constantly under attack. Theres a reason why Jotaro is like the fan favorite with the majority cause the guys masculine & hes built like a muscular hero, hes a man of few words and kicks ass, he has style but doesnt go into twink category like how they did during Giorno Giovanna saga, that was the toughest season to watch for me characters had horrendous looking attires and they werent as likeable as the character's from the previous seasons.

I hated the bulky parts 1-3 build…..until I got to part 4. While going through the first parts, I thought the characters were just comically ripped. Like how is Johnathon/Joseph/Jotaro all built like that when they’re supposed to be teenagers to young adults.
By part 4, when they changed to the more slim art style, I missed the super ripped builds because I feel like it added to the over the topness that JoJo is known for. I still like current build better but I feel like the earlier builds fit the entire theme of “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure” to a tee.
Edit: I think the weirdest part is seeing Jotaro being ripped in part 3 and then in part 4 he’s more slim. I kinda wonder what it would look like if he left existing ripped characters ripped.

And I think the Fist of the North Star Aesthetic looks great for it; I think JoJo moving away from it was a good move, because Akari isn’t as good at it, and draws better with slimmer designs. Also, Jonathon crying was probably inspired by Fist of the North Star, as that series also had manly tears. Honestly I think that Jonathon was Kenshiro, but not as well written.
