Normally we’d expect to see a car updated after three or four years, but in the world of electric cars, things move fast. While the ID.3 landed with a big fanfare and some reasonable reviews, even Volkswagen would admit that it could have done better.
Early cars were plagued by buggy software while the brand’s decision to ditch its traditional sombre but sophisticated design approach didn’t sit will well with existing owners. Turquoise paint and white steering wheels may have looked great on the drawing board and on the show stands, but to Volkswagen’s conservative buyers, they were all a step too far, too soon.
So now, just over two years after the ID.3 first arrived, there’s a new version charged with broadening its appeal to the masses. Calmer, less controversial and more traditional in approach, the new ID.3 has its sights set on Golf and Polo buyers looking to go electric without shouting it from the rooftops.
Join Ginny as she puts the new ID.3 through its paces in the UK for the first time. Does the new version have more appeal or would you still choose something else? Let us know in the comments below.

I have an ID.3 1st Edition, nearly three years old now. It has headlights that move around when you approach the car - and turn into corners - and selectively dip so as not to dazzle oncoming drivers. It has brake lights shaped like an X. It has a silver strip along the side at the roofline. It has over-the-air software updates (although a couple of times VW has had to recall the car to carry out an update that couldn't be done OTA). None of these features are new to the facelift.
The ID.3 is much maligned, by journalists, but much loved by owner drivers. It's a very easy car to drive, very comfortable, quiet, spacious, relaxed, reliable, amazingly cheap to run. It has niggles but these irritate journalists much more than owners - who have time to get used to the car. The sliders below the infotainment screen could do with a backlight but otherwise they work just fine. The two window winders in the driver's door rather than four (not mentioned in this review but in so many others) are actually a good idea. You are highly unlikely to wind down the rear window by mistake to talk to the server in the MacDonalds drive-through. And you can touch a surface just ahead of the buttons for over three seconds, after which you can wind all four windows together with just one button. Some people like the haptic surfaces on the steering wheel, some don't. I don't, but I recognise that it's a small thing and a matter of personal preference.
Journalists hardly bother to mention the great qualities of the car. VW really know how to make cars. The doors open and shut precisely, the seals don't leak water into the boot or passenger cabin. The tail-light lenses don't fill up with water, either. The chassis is nicely tuned, the suspension just right, the steering precise but light. The motor is instantly powerful and the throttle mapping progressive. In a car the length and width of a Golf the passenger cabin is as spacious as a Passat while retaining a Golf-size boot - and the turning circle is as tight as an Up! city car. These are the things that really matter, not haptic buttons.

      @drfisheye Před rokem +8

Journalists drive everything, so they know that ALL EV's are easy to drive, comfortable, quiet, reliable and cheap to run. All car doors on modern cars close well, this isn't the eighties. And VW's reliability is fine, but nothing special. The turning circle is fine, but nothing special compared to similar EV's. The ID.3 is a fine car and so are the others. Journalists will focus on the differences.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. We ordered our Family Pro Performance in Nov '21 and got it Feb '23. It's an incredible car, and I feel that it's almost as if the car journalists really had an issue with VW and they'd have badly reviewed the car no matter what. Lots of internet commenters also waded in without actually driving the car.
We're a family of 4 and it's our only car. The kids love it. We've gone on holiday with it and it's used for commuting and the school run. The inside is full of empty crisp packets and the boot is full of grass and mud thanks to a tip run and we treat it exactly as we did our old Skoda Yeti.
The facelifted version does seem to be quite expensive, and lots of the "standard" kit we have on our car is now an option so I don't think VW are doing themselves any favours there. However, it's a great car and never quite understood the naysayers.

    • @TomClaessens
      @TomClaessens Před 7 měsíci +3

I agree, partly. I received mine in Oct, '23 and it ticks all the boxes as you mentioned (comfortable, spacious, quiet, reliable, etc.) but as drfisheye points out, that's to say for almost if not all electric vehicles. So I do get why journalists seem to nitpick on small details, as that's the only thing (besides range) that really sets these EVs apart.
What bothers me the most is how over dramatized they react to the sliders for instance on the infotainment system. I agree, it should've been backlit like the buttons below. However, I've set my climatisation at 20.5 degrees C when I received the car, and I haven't touched it since then. As a journalist/reviewer I get it why you have to mention it, but it's not a big deal (to me) driving this car daily. I'd be much more bothered by the panel gaps of a Tesla for instance, than these buttons not being lit.
As you mention, this car has a lot of qualities, and as drfisheye again points out, a lot of this stuff is to become "expected" but if you shop around, and visit dealerships of different manufacturers, it's clear that what you'd expect at these price ranges is far from "common". You'd EXPECT cars to be build well, with proper alignment of panels, without water infiltration issues, etc. and yet there are enough examples where that's the case. To me it's a great, or even better the perfect car for my daily commute.

I have a 2023 ID3 Tour Pro (77KW). I comfortably get 310+ miles and have had no issues with the software. A backlight for heater slider would be useful but you can “hello ID” and have the car adjust the temp if it’s too dark (you remember where the slider is, so it is really not an issue). I am a car enthusiast as much as the next person and IMO the ID3 is a very good car with some new design ideas which work perfectly fine. I have found the quality to be as expected with VW - just more environmentally aware. Again a good thing.

@thetruthful8388 Sweden has some interesting statistics on self-ignition fires as 40% of new cars in Sweden 🇸🇪 are BEVs. 0.004% of EVs caught fire 🔥, compared to 0.08% of fossil cars. Therefore, a fossil car is 20 times more likely to ignite than a battery electric vehicle.

You can only order the launch edition which will be close to the VW price. I visited my local dealer last week and that was what they said.

4:30 Haven't they inform you, that even the first ID cars (could have) had the software update years ago that enables their Over The Air update capability. This function is not unique to the facelifted ID.3. Furthermore, it is applied to all MEB platform cars throguh ID.4 and 5 and Skoda Enyaq. These updates were done free during their first yearly maintenance checkup at the dealer.

Noticed your car was on 19" tyres. General owner consensus with pre facelift ID3 is that the ride is very good on 18s but can be less good on 19s or 20s on some roads. If someone interested is particularly interested in ride quality I'd definitely recommend trying a car on 18s (which most are, as the bigger wheels are options).

Those interior quality issues aren't restricted to the ID range, either. Until very recently I had a 2019 VW Tiguan, which had the usual upmarket dashboard in it, and when it went in for its last service I was given a 2022 Golf as a courtesy car and the dash in that was exactly the same as the ID.3 and ID.4 I'd looked at earlier in the year. I was staggered, as the Golf's interior was one of the biggest reasons to get one, and yet they ditched it in favour of a thin shelf-like thing with rubbish plastics, screens that look like afterthoughts and those horrible haptic switches with no backlights so you can't find them. The one saving grace was that the climate control could be controlled without using the infotainment screen, but that again was haptics which were almost impossible to control, especially the temperature. It was a great car to drive, don't get me wrong, but living with that interior would've made me homicidal. The fact the Cupra Born, which is ostensibly an rebadged ID.3, can be so much better appointed inside and for the same money is pretty ridiculous.
I went for the Audi Q4 in the end. Still a slightly wedgy dash, but it has proper buttons for things and the infotainment screen looks like it's part of the design.

Nice one Ginny. Certainly availability of EV's has been an issue but lead times are reducing significantly in the UK anyway. Finance packages are certainly more attractive if that is your preference and 'if' I had to go for the ID.3 or the Vauxhall on a monthly plan the ID.3 would likely win but I've not driven either. In reality I'll wait a while longer. That touch control for almost everything is something that right now is a deal breaker right now. A family member recently got a VW group car (not an EV) and the infotainment screen is not my cup of tea/coffee/wine. at all. Yes you can get used to it but plodding through screens when the car is moving over a less than billiard table smooth road (do we have any of those in the UK?) is far from ideal for me. The rest of the car is pretty OK though. Out of the current VW group EV's I'd consider the Enyaq (I've not driven this either yet) as the touch screen at least has short cuts and if I recall correctly (I could be wrong) has the useful controls illuminated. Thanks for my continued education on EV's They are certainly looking more like a viable option in the future. If only my property had the possibility of a wall box charger.

ID3 max owner here. Drove a MG4, brilliant, easy to drive. Would certainly consider when my lease is up. Great review, however some thoughts. Charging app is shown separately on the old ID 3 with software version 3.2 so that’s not new. You won’t get 4.6 m/kWh that’s ridiculous. according the lieometer or guessometer you might get 4.2 m/kWh but it’s a lie. Try doing a long range test and we what you actually get. As for winter range expect less than 3m/kWh. Also when you get a test car to try, do you check the tyre pressures. If they are high then maybe you get harsher ride and more noise? Also is the spec of the MG4 the same as the ID3. I bet you get more on the MG4 than the ID3 for the price, for example electric seats, matrix lights (cost option previously), panoramic roof?

I waited 15 months for my ID.3 and got it last October. I prefer the look of mine over this new one. Mine also has the matrix led lights which “look around” as you approach so its not new to this updated model. Neither are the “X” lights on the back new, I have those too on my car!! Maybe by the time I got my car the glitches in the infotainment had been ironed out as I’ve never had a problem with mine. You complain about the volume slider Ginny but you can adjust it via the buttons on the steering wheel so it’s not a problem! I’d definitely choose the ID.3 over the MG4 any time; that is one ugly car!! 🤣

So the most endearing aspect of the new ID.3 is the finance deal? Really?! This is not the first video I've seen recently that raves about a car's finance. And is it really so much cheaper than the Astra? VW charges extra for things that were included six years ago (e.g. tyre pressure monitoring). The ride is harsh and car feels unrefined but if you drive it on the right roads you'll be fine, lol. I'll stick with my Mk7 Golf for a long long time before I consider £40k for a car acceptable. Now add up how much extra the interest on the finance deal adds to the cars over all cost and you'll be shocked.

There’s no way on god’s little green earth would I spend that much money for a car that isn’t great out of town, I mean, you buy a car to travel in not just to drive around town. Who does that??? I still think the Kia Niro is the best value you can get for the money + a 7yrs warranty. Good review tho. Keep up the good work.

We had an early id3, which was a bit glitchy and we chopped it for an MG4 Trophy (and a pocket of cash) when the market had gone bonkers; much preferred the VW, faults and all to the just-as-glitchy MG - anyway there's a happy ending to the tale as we've now got a Tesla...

Does it still have 2 buttons for the windows? Does it actually have Augmented Reality HUD? The ID's are meant to be in Australia next year.. but MG beat them to it.

My parents may have been ripped off this week because their PCP term was longer than the warranty on their ID3 and they'd suffered from electrical gremlins recently that their local VW dealer said would be hard/impossible to fix, namely the heating randomly going to max. The correct (in my mind) thing to do would be to insist VW fix it as their warranty expires in April, and to buy an extended warranty. The answer from the dealer was to pay off their PCP early(!) and buy a new ID3 on a new PCP at a much higher rate! Not happy.

The MG 4 would be my choice when you asked the question and my response hardened the more you review went on. VW are too slow off the mark even with this 'refresh'. Amazing that an established car manufacture like VW are struggling so much. I suspect if they do not get their finger out soon they will be bought out by another manufacturer that isn't struggling so much. (I would like to say Kia or Hyundai but I suspect it will be a Chinese company).

I’ve got a Cupra Born, which is the cheaper better version of this car.
It’s crazy that all the ID3 facelift does is make it almost as good as the Born, which still has the same main downsides.
What VAG really needs to do is bring back buttons and knobs. Touch screens and haptic buttons are bloody dangerous! Just because Tesla has a huge touch screen doesn’t mean everyone wants one.
The steering wheel should have actual buttons and switches and so should the climate controls and safety features. Number one of the things that should have a button is lane assist and front assist.
Lane assist is a complete menace if road markings aren’t perfect and the only way to turn it off when it goes berserk is by not looking where you are going and delving into a laggy, complicated touch screen (not ideal on the motorway when being yanked from left to right).
It’s also pretty frightening when you’re car starts doing emergency stops for foliage at low speeds when driving though country lanes and the only way to stop it is to be cautious of getting near twigs or by drilling down trough a complex menu system to turn off a safety feature that turns itself back on every time you start the car back up.
It’s not plastic decals or squidgy door trims that will stop me buying another VAG car if they don’t sort their act out!
As for “over the air updates”, I’ll believe that when it actually happens.
