Im listening to this on repeat now. I feel bad that I dont listen to the John Mayer on as much, but those little bass and keyboard motifs at the end of the vocal lines satisfy that craving for interesting phrasing. The dissonance @2:20 is really nice as well.

Wow I had no idea Mary Spender is like Gregg Alexander they write songs for other people. I would like to see more of Mary Spenders unreleased demos she written for other people.
After thinking about it for a bit, I really think this is the best version of the song. Mayer’s version has a verse that feels really bland, with no change in the rhythmic pace from the chorus, and really predictable chords that change on the 1 each measure. Spender’s version also kinda keeps the same pace going all the way through, but I do like her melody better, and I can’t really say anything bad about hers because this was all her genius idea in the first place. But this version is the only one that really changes the pace between the verse and chorus, switching up the rhythms to keep things interesting. Most of the chords aren’t anything crazy, but they feel so much more fresh when it’s not just a new, predictable chord every measure. Idk if I really have the musical vocabulary to fully describe myself, but basically, I just think this is compositionally much more creative than Mayer’s version. His version isn’t bad, but if I’m honest, the verse sounds like it could’ve been written by an AI after having the chorus fed into it as learning material. Rant over.
There's so much I want to be able to do in my life. Music is just one of my passions. I just... I feel like I want to achieve something as grand as Sungazer and these reharmonizations but I'm scared that committing to everything else I care about will only take away from my love for music.
