I consider the first part "Already Over: Resistance" and the second "Already Over: Acceptance." The first is obviously in resistance to God's plan and the second is the eventual realization of acceptance for God's plan. This is why the song has the same lyrics but different tones. Resistance always comes before acceptance.
I always imagine someone standing on a cliff about to end it all and the only one watching him in the darkness of the last night, is death. The singer knows it and is finally ready to give himself into the arms of that invisible power that surrounded him all his life and seduced him out of the shadows over and over again. There is so much sorrow and fear in that voice and yet so much hope and destination. A person who dies not always feels nothing, they are not blank, even if they think they are. And no matter how much you played your final moment in your mind, it does not matter, you'll might not be as ready as you think you are. Death might listen to your pain and end it forever, but I still think it must not be the person who gives up to sing this. Death can also sing it, longing for a life in the sun it will never get.
