My favorite version! The director later said he regretted letting the end drag on for so long, but of course that's the thing that's so unique about this version, that you actually see the results of Scrooge's salvation, instead of just being told.
Because the end was done with musical numbers, its length did not drag. On the contrary, it was the perfect ending.
I’ve never seen anybody nail the redemption moment as well as Albert Finney when he wakes up the next morning. The all time best.
Alistair Simm comes pretty close though. He goes practically loony with joy and relief.

This is my very favorite version of this story. We watched every Christmas growing up, and even as an adult I watch it when I can't be with my family. Albert Finney really shows a great range in his take on Scrooge. Plus, the music is great. Thank you so much for watching!

This is my absolute favourite version of a Christmas Carol. Full of charm, brilliant acting, a tremendous cast, and just overall delight. And, of course, appropriate scares in all the right places.

Albert Finney played the lawyer 30 years later in Erin Brockovich. He was also in Big Fish- a great movie. Love his acting.
Always loved this version. Scrooge singing "I hate people!" is a highlight. I used to sing this at Christmas when I worked in retail.

Every time I hear someone say "thank you" I sing "thank you very much" in my head to this day. Albert Finney was such an all around performer, you should check him out in the Movie Annie. He plays Daddy Warbucks so well. The guy who played Jacob Marley's ghost is the one who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars.
The actor is Alec Guiness.

My wife and I met in 1970 in HS. We went to this movie on a date when it came out in theaters. It has become our favorite version, and we watch it together every year. We were married the week before Christmas in 1974. We will be celebrating our 50th anniversary this next Christmas. Great reaction.
My favorite version of this classic tale. The songs are infectious, the acting is impeccable and the humor is sharp as a razor.

My mum read the book to me when I was a little boy and it's message has stayed with me for ever.
As a child, this film intrigued me. Now that I am much older, I have deep sorrow as to how this film mirrored my life to be. Not that I was a "Scrooge," but that how my Karma played its dance in my time. This film has a haunting effect!
If you want to see the greatest musical ever made from a Dickens novel, I'd highly recommend 1968's "Oliver!" It won six Academy Awards including Best Picture, and you'll be humming those songs for at least two weeks after you see it.
They used the same sets at Shepperton Studios for both Oliver and Scrooge
Honestly I much prefer this film over Oliver. Though I like the story of Oliver Twist and I really liked the movie and the songs growing up. I'm no longer a big fan. And unfortunately the song "As long as he needs me" has now become a song I've come to dislike given it's context. In another film I may like it again. But I do still like some bits of the movie and I think the choreography and music and acting is very good.

Albert Finney was only 34 when he played Scrooge. This has always been my favorite version of A Christmas Carol. I couldn't get over it when I realised that he also plays Erin Brockovich's boss in that movie. I always assumed he was a lot older in 1970.
In "The Muppets Christmas Carol" there were 2 Marley's but that is because the characters Statler and Waldorf were chosen as the character. Two in MCC. There is really only one, Jacob Marley.
Having two Marleys in MCC also allowed Brian Henson and company to insert a clever Bob Marley reference by having their second Marley named "Robert"!
You're spot on about the nostalgic aspect of this. Throughout the '70s, this version was played on network TV every year. Parts of it scared the absolute crap out of me and my siblings, made us all cry at the end, and became a critical part of our holiday traditions. We would dance around the house for weeks singing "Thank you very much" - I'm sure, driving our parents crazy. I don't know why it eventually fell out of favor with the television powers that be, but it did. Terrible shame. Like many are saying here, Albert Finney was absolutely amazing in this role. Although I love pretty much every version of A Christmas Carol, this one will always be the most special for me. Glad you watched it!
The 1970 "Scrooge" and the 1984 Geo. C. Scott version are the go-to's for our family here!

This was my first introduction to the story. My father had taped this off the TV and wore it out. When he finally got the commercial version I was suprised how much had been cut out, especially the final scenes.

This is such a clever musical. Albert Finney was only 34 when he took the title role. It just shows what a great actor he was. Even though he was mostly known for serious roles, he actually loved musicals and song and dance but few thought of casting him in these roles.
By far my favorite 'Christmas Carol.' A tradition in our house. Finney's performance is a stunner. The songs are infectious. And, in the end, utterly joyous. Brilliant filmmaking from the director of "The Poseidon Adventure." Seriously!
The sets, the lyrics, the editing, and of course that amazing performance by 34yr old Albert Finney. It's literally stunning and gets better every yr I watch it!

@@1111Unbreakable A lot of the sets are from the movie "Oliver" I suppose if you've recreated Dickensian London once there's no need to do it again. It really is a great movie. The wife and I just re-watched it last weekend

Makes me choke up every time and I’ve been watching it for 40 years.
One of the impressive things about this film is that Albert Finney, who plays Scrooge, was only 34 years old at the time, and was more like the younger Scrooge in the flashbacks than the old one in the main story. He really did a good job of coming across as a crochety old miser. Future Obi-Wan Kenobi Sir Alec Guinness as Marley was also quite enjoyable, though I heard his time filming this movie was unpleasant, as he got injured during one of the stunts.

What's funny is that many people imagine Scrooge as an elderly man, but if you look at the timeline, he should only be in his early fifties at the oldest. He seems older because he's so miserable, but he isn't really an "old" man.
Albert Finney was cast in Big Fish because he looked like Ewan McGregor in his youth. Or maybe it was the other way around.
"You weird little man" is a line I love using every now and then. 😋
I've always been of the opinion that this is the best adaptation of Dickins' A Christmas Carol. Albert finey, the ghosts, the songs, all of it is just so good
"I must go and get ready. I'm going to have Christmas dinner with my family". Just the way Albert Finney delivers that line, with such pride and happiness, makes me sob every year.
My favorite version. I love the early sequence of Bob doing good holiday shopping, and Scrooge doing his collection. I also love his transformation. He sold it perfectly. I love when he makes Mrs Cratchett scream. The best self aware joke I've seen in a movie.
I love how it goes straight from Scrooge saying "And I don't care if they hate me!" to the children yelling "Boo!". That is perfect editing.
Once you know Albert Finley‘s real age, when this was made, you realize how great Scrooges makeup is. You see him without the make up with a ghost of Christmas past comes he plays him self courting his beloved. This is him without all that make up.
One of my favorite adaptations. My family and I enjoy this movie every year. One of my sons is a very stoic person, and he said "life should be worth singing about." I know he is right in that statement.
I highly recommend Scrooge from 1951 starring Alistair Sims. It’s one of if not the best adaptation ever made. Definitely worth a watch if you plan on trying other adaptations!

@@adventuresinlaurenland I think what made him so good is that his emotions felt genuine. Often Scrooges fall into one of too categories: cartoonishly grouchy or stoic, dramatically broody.
Sim’s Scrooge felt like a real person. His delivery was natural. Likewise, you see him genuinely begin to change throughout the story. First, by adding additional dialogue and scenes in the Past, we see more clearly how he turns for the worse, while simultaneously throughout her him slowly change for the better. I think that’s partially why people like Michael Caine’s take as well. While he fits into the stoic, broody camp, his transformation feels genuine and natural.
This is my Family Favorite!! We watch it any time of the year. We always say quotes and inside jokes from the movie. I was so excited that you watched this one! I had so much fun watching one of my favorites with you! The music is the best! THANK YOU VERY MUCH 🎶
My favorite is the version with George C Scott. He's such an amazing Scrooge. Very close to the original but this one is really good as well.

Indeed Scott was a great Scrooge. My fav by an eyelash is Alastair Sim's version. Reginald Owen 3rd. Seymour Hicks 4th. All magnificent! This one is ok. Finney great but too many silly liberties taken with the story, especially hell & santa.
That one is my favorite as well, shame it's often overlooked.
When he sings as an old man watching his younger self and wanting to change things - always gets me right in the gut, because who hasn't felt that exact same thing?

Exactly, I had something almost as heart reaching as this. A few years ago my church had a men's conference that they rented out space in my old high school. What was the topic of the conference? I was sitting there in my old middle and high school cafeteria, sitting at the exact same tables I sat in back in the day discussing...unfulfilled dreams. That was rough
Not me, I'm 15 and live in the moment. I don't look back and don't think too far ahead. Having a regret mindset is silly and illogical. The things you did in the past were not necessarily wrong, you did what you thought was best at the time with the knowledge you had and those decisions made you what you are today.

The 1951 version with Alstair Sim is the greatest Scrooge film of all time.

My favorite part of this reaction is the idea that turning your life around starts with dusting the house. That's just adorable!
Cleaning house is legit a great first step. I helped a hoarder clean their apartment once and it was crazy how the energy changed around them. They were gritting their teeth hard...but accepted that it needed to be done.
The happiness song makes this movie for me. It gives Scrooge a back story, showed the depth of his love and why he turned bitter. It's heartbreaking

Saw this on my 10th birthday in the theater in 1970. One of my favorites. Albert Finney and Alec Guinness are great actors. Think the music brings Dickens to life more than the other versions.

I tried to watch this every holiday season since I was a kid in the 70's. As an adult, I purchased it and made watching it a Christmas tradition, as it is my favorite movie version of _A Christmas Carol,_ (even though I feel it gets a bit slow during the trip to Hell during the Ghost of Christmas Future section).

I first saw this movie as a 10-year-old in the early 1990s. It's been one of my favorite adaptations of the story ever since, and I still often sing some of the songs from it.
This is my FAVORITE version of the story. I directed this show at our local Opera House. It has become a yearly tradition.
As a child, I always looked forward to the Mr. Magoo version of "A Christmas Carol." That version is also a musical.

It always amazes me how few people recognize that Alec Guinness "Obi-wan Kenobi " from Star Wars plays Marley.
The guy who sings "Thank You Very Much," is Anton Rogers. He was the male lead in a sitcom called "May to December," which I hated, but my mom loved. He was also in the movie DIrty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Caine.
Ohmygosh! I got SO EXCITED when I saw you were gonna be reacting to this version. I didn't know anybody else even knew about it. It's been my family's favorite for YEARS. We literally quote it to each other randomly all the time. It may have come out decades before we were born, but it is still a work of art with the most singable tunes ❤

The sets were originally used in a previous Dickens, musical adaptation, Oliver. I love this version and it always seems to come out top for me every year. Happy holiday. 🎄

Sent me running out of the theater crying when I saw it in 1970. (Hey, that Hell sequence scared me, as I was only 7 years old. Just because I had made it through "2001: A Space Odyssey" two years before doesn't mean I was ready for *everything* .)
Hopefully that won't happen this time, lol.
I first saw "Scrooge" at age 10, and while I didn't run or cry, I DID cover my face and tremble a bit when the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come showed his skull face and Scrooge fell into the open grave...

"A Christmas Carol" is the original novella written by Charles Dickens in the 1840s, which made him a 19th century superstar for the rest of his life. As a boy, his father lost all his money, and he had to leave school and go work in a factory; so he went from rags to riches, as did many of his characters.
Must've been pretty mind blowing for him to achieve all that success.

Tiny Tim is believed to have had rickets, tuberculosis (TB), polio, and/or cerebral palsy.
Dickens does not explicitly say what Tiny Tim's illness is. In 1992, renal tubular acidosis (type 1), which is a type of kidney failure causing the blood to become acidic, was proposed as one possibility. Rickets (caused by a lack of vitamin D) has been proposed as another possibility, as it was a not uncommon disease during that time period. Either illness was treatable during Dickens' lifetime, but fatal if not treated, thus following in line with the comment of the Ghost of Christmas Present that Tiny Tim would die "if these shadows remained unaltered by the Future".
thank you for posting this. every year as a kid i would watch this with my grandparents...we would buy a big box of zachary chocolates and i would help my grandma make goodies like fudge and popcornballs and cookies and then we'd watch Scrooge. that makes me happy to see it hasnt been forgotten. this was always my favorite version.
Definitely my favorite version. I have the soundtrack saved on a 3000 song flash drive, which plays in my car. The songs are good enough to listen to all year long with the other songs I've collected. My 2nd favorite version is AN AMERICAN CHRISTMAS CAROL. Starring Henry Winkler.
The first time I saw this, I was gd enthralled. This is my favorite version of the Dickens story.
A sentimental favorite of mine. About 40 years ago I played Ghose of Christmas Present in a children's theater production of this musical, with my older brother playing Scrooge. He just played that role again (splendidly!) in a local production.
I seem to recall that Mr. Magi's version scared the heck out of me as a kid, and there's an interesting version - An American Christmas Carol, starring Henry Winkler.
My absolute favorite version was seeing Patrick Stewart present a one-man version on Broadway back in the late 90s. I saw it twice; one of the most memorable theater experiences I've ever had.

Thank you for this, I needed this, I got to revisit my wonderful childhood. My family saw this in the theater. The era held many wonderful memories and many musicals. The flying ghosts were terrifying to a five or six year old, but we laughed at the size of his chain! Merry Christmas!

This is the version of this story I grew up with. When I was a kid it was on every yeat. Never missed it. I have made it a point to revisit it the last few years. I just watched it last weekend. I never thought of it as a musical when i was younger. I think because the songs fit really well and reinforce the plot point they are hitting on.
If you haven't seen it, Cassie, another Christmas movie you might really like is "The Bishop's Wife" with Cary Grant. That's an annual watch for me!
I love this movie; it's basically a comedic version of the story. Albert Finney is having a blast hamming it up, and Alec Guinness, my favorite actor, is very campy and foppish.
I lean towards the casting of George C. Scott as Scrooge in the 1984 version. That voice. : )
Absolutely loved this as a kid. It doesn't get enough respect. There are some spectacular performances and filmmaking here.
My parents recorded this off the TV when I was little and we watched it every Christmas eve. The part with Marley and Scrooge flying through the air with the ghosts terrified me and would cover my eyes.
I watch this every year on Christmas Eve around 10 pm ending at midnight. I love the fact that Albert's makeup was so good because that's what he looked like years later.
For most people, which version of the story they prefer has a lot to do with which one they saw first and how old they were when they saw it. In time you start to evaluate each of them on their individual merits. You don't have to have a favorite - but "Scrooge" happens to be one of mine.
This is my favorite version of A Christmas Carol. First, because I love the songs! I’m such a fan of musicals. And second because Albert Finney was just so good. What are the best musicals ever in your estimation? I haven't seen that many. But I always liked Moulin Rouge if that counts as one. And Newsies. (lol I know critics kinda hated that one)
Well, I’m not what you’d call a completionist, there are a lot of musicals I haven’t seen, lol. I’m a big fan of anything by Rodgers & Hammerstein (including the short teleplay Cinderella w/Lesley Ann Warren & Stuart Damon), but Chicago is a more modern musical that has some killer songs. It’s about women in prison which sounds bad but it’s done so unapologetically, you can’t help but root for them. Idk, just do some exploring. You might hit a bad 1 now & then but as long as you don’t have a problem w/people bursting spontaneously into song, lol, you should find many to like. 😄
@@sylvanaire Yeah Chicago was great. Zellweger and Catherine-Zeta nailed it. Just saw Barbara Streisand on Colbert. Apparently she's known for musicals. Lol. Maybe I'll start there and see if mom and dad would be up for an old one over Christmas.
I recommend Funny Girl if you’re beginning w/Streisand. She costars w/Omar Sherif who was absolutely dreamy! Her signature song, People, is from this musical. Hope you enjoy it!

I was 7 years old in 1970 and I saw this movie in the theaters! The ghost-y scene (fly through the air) scared the heck out of me! Also, the part where he goes to Hell was also very upsetting but I did love the ending and that really lifted my spirits! I love this movie for its big, British Musical (just like Oliver Twist and Mary Poppins to name a couple) production! Great stuff!

P.s. I would definitely recommend that Disney's A Christmas Carol from the year 2009 I believe it is a animated movie. And it was in 3D in the movie theaters.❤
My family has watched this every year since it was released on VHS. I've probably seen it 35 times. It is the least well known of the Scrooge/Christmas Carol movies, and it is by far the best. Albert Finney deserved an Oscar for this performance. He plays both young and old Scrooge. The same guy talking to Jacob Marley is the same guy shooting the bow and arrow with Isabell. No CGI. Just hall of fame acting and makeup.

This is my Dad's favorite version of A Christmas Carol, by far. He REALLY gets into "Thank You Very Much" when it starts up. I've always liked this version. Albert Finney is great as Scrooge, and Alec Guinness is a great Marley. Yes, that's Alec Guinness, aka Obi-Wan Kenobi! Normally I'm not big on musicals, but the songs here were a lot of fun, and the whole thing still looks wonderful 50+ years on.
My personal favorite version of A Christmas Carol is the 1984 version starring George C. Scott as Scrooge. I recommend it VERY highly.
I saw this movie in the 2nd grade on a field trip to Philadelphia and this movie has stuck with me throughout the years. The scenery, the music for sure, the acting and the story itself to me, was the best by far! You don't see it enough on TV in America because it's an English production but I have the DVD and you can find it on CZcams or most streaming services!!
My tradition is to watch it on Thanksgiving night and again Christmas Eve!! ❤️

Speaking of scrooge went to a comedy club to watch comedians roast Santa. Rudolph, Charlie brown, grandma that got ran over by a reindeer, the grinch, mistletoe. So much fun
I've always really liked this movies dipiction of the ghost of Christmas present. A better representation of Christmas than santa I feel.

This is my favorite Christmas Carol! I watch 5 every year... this one, George C Scott, the Disney one with Jim Carey, the Muppets, and scrooged with bill murray... Great choice

I'm surprised you did not mention a recognition of two of the characters whom you have watched in other films.
Ebenezer Scrooge was played by Albert Finney who was in the films "Erin Brockovich" as the lawyer and as Daddy Warbucks in "Annie."
Jacob Marley's Ghost was played by Alec Guinness who had the role of Obi Wan Kenobi in "Star Wars" episodes 4, 5, & 6.. He also had the role of Colonel Nicholson in "A Bridge on the River Kwai."
I'm so happy you reacted to this movie. It's an annual staple for me and we even go try to see the live musical that inevitably gets done at some of the local theaters each year. We went and saw it put on by a local community theater last weekend. It was awful but we still had fun. LOL. 'Thank you very much. That's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me!"
I always watch this after seeing George C Scott's version. It's like having a nice desert after a heavy meal. First time I watched, I kept breaking out singing "Thank you very much" and "I like life" afterwards, startling my cat. Lol. RIP Mr. Kitty, love ya kiddo.
This is the DEFINITIVE movie version of A Christmas Carol - amazing cast, amazing songs, sheer perfection. Thank you very much, thank you very much... that's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me...
This is my favorite version of “A Christmas Carol”. I used to watch this when I was a child and as a teenager. Thanks to Cassie for reacting to it, I’m glad you enjoyed it and you liked the songs too! Some of these songs would be stuck in my head for part of the year, “I like life! This became my favorite "A Christmas Carol" after I saw it when I was stationed in Korea in 2006. I think it's the musical that got me. And I don't even watch much of musicals. After watching it, I guess you can say, "I like life, life likes me....."
The Minister's Cat is fun to play and tough to do This movie and Oliver! are my two favorite musicals. The fact that Finney played such a wide age range is amazing. He's one of the best actors of all time. The ghost hearse scene Scrooge first gets home is downright chilling.
This is my very fave version of A Christmas Carol ever! Everything in this film is so well done, all the acting, the songs...and Albert Finney's portrayal is wonderful!
My all time favorite Christmas movie. I have watched it every year since I was a kid. Feels so authentic.
The black and white with Alastair Sim is still the best classic and is actually pretty scary.
