  • The Water Temple, easily a top contender for the worst dungeon in a Zelda game by so many of the series fans. Sure, nowadays there are some cases for it actually being one of Ocarina of Time’s better constructed dungeons, but I think everyone’s bias against this section of the game from when they were kids is still super strong, although, to be fair, it’s not just Ocarina of Time’s fault. Everyone hates water levels in video games. But one thing most of them have in common is exceptional music. How does the Water Temple stack up? Surprisingly well! This is my video essay on why The Water Temple in Ocarina of Time has the Most Perfect Atmospheric Music in a Video Game.
Here is a great article on the architecture of the temple that I recommend as well: www.architectureofzelda.com/t...

I really enjoy these perfect atmosphere videos! Regarding the Water Temple, it's funny since I don't really hate it as many other think (and I'm talking about the N64 version)... And quite frankly it might be because of the atmosphere itself which makes going through this wet hell of a dungeon (still I don't hate it that much) more pleasing...

Ngl, I seriously enjoyed the Water Temple as a child, often looking forward to it whenever I started a new game. Later on I was exposed to the general opinion, and could never understand why it was so hated. I realise some of the reason why I liked it was the music, which I often literally fell asleep listening to (my dad had stories of walking into my room to see me hunched over, looking like I was upset, and when he then approached me with a serious tone he realised I was softly snoring). It was always so peaceful to me.
Also, in regards to the actual Temple, I was obsessed with looking in literally everywhere for items and mapping the place out (7 year old me also played collectathons like Jak and Daxter), so I was rarely lost and often didn't get the felling that I forgot something. Was frustrating at times, I'll admit, but it was a good kind of frustration - I got to listen to the music more and play with the water levels some more.

I always enjoyed it too, and the music was probably a big part of that. But I also loved the calming atmosphere and beautiful blues illuminating everything. But I also never had a problem with missing keys or getting lost like so many people mention, so I don't know how that feels but I can imaging it would be infuriating. But for me, the Water Temple was always one of my favorite temples in the game.

Were probably one of the few that liked the temple when the game came out. For me my favorite part of it was the raising water levels of the temple. Didn't really understand what people didn't like about it. Yes the backtracking in the temple could be a little frustrating if you missed something but that I don't blame on the design. I remember first time I played it missing stuff and it didn't bother me at all. I think the only thing in the temple that bug me the most was missing the one Golden Skulltula down in the catacomb being it was more out of the way then any other one when trying to get all the Golden Skulltulas.

What I also love about the Water Temple is that its infrastructure logically feels like a temple, a temple being a place people go to worship (or in this dungeons case, Zoras). Forest Temple feels like an abandoned villa, Fire Temple looks like a paradise for demons and Shadow temple is a execution house. Spirit Temple does fit the bill for a temple with the colossus statue and all.
And puzzle wise, it does what dungeons are suppose to do, give players a challenge. Encouraging players to keep an eye round corners, pay attention to the map, locate missing chests and remembering rooms. One of the best mini-bosses in Zelda history (testing your patience and understanding of enemy behaviour), a water boss that isn't an evil fish/octopus, but an enormous protozoan is very unique.

I honestly never had an issue with the water temple, even when I first played it at 9 years old. I actually got stuck in the shadow temple because I didn't use the eye of truth at the right moment. I was never impressed with the water temple's music, but it did set the perfect mood and actually was soothing.

The music from this, simply incredible!! The nature of water is so greatly reflected in it I feel like, whenever link was dropping to the bottom through the water with this music, it’s like I could feel the actual cold and pull from the water that I’d feel in a pool, and its amazing! This actually felt like a temple to me with the sort of mystical sound of it, having a very solid ancient feel behind it. Calm and free het very dangerous and stern! During the first minute you mentioned how Sonic drowning gave kids anxiety.
Something I actually did as a kid to get over my fear of this was literally to drown myself, it's like the fear of death but in a video game this isn't a concept that exists and I was aware of that and so, for curiosity reasoning I wanted to see what would happen.. "death wasn't the end, it was a temporary punishment, a setback."
Oddly enough this was very good for my early game sense development as it not only helped me at the time to keep myself calm but even nowadays as I can quite literally live on the edge of 1hp and keep a more calm mind... as far as that goes since most games punish you for losing.

Water Temple was always my favorite in OOT.
I played the game casually as a kid for a long time and would always get stuck after the great dell tree. So there was always this doorway at the bottom of a lake, just out of reach. It teased me for so long because I would fish for hours so it was so close by.
When I got older and finally actually played the game I was super hyped to finally find out what was in there and it did not disappoint.
I ended up creating a map for a game on steam with a section HEAVILY inspired by the OOT water temple.

The water temple is probably one of if not my favourite dungeon in the series. I love how you have to think about your navigation and plan your route because navagating is so complex. Getting all the keys was not an issue for me since I tend to use the map and compass a lot for planning my traversal and finding secrets. I played it first on the N64 but didnt mind the iron boots then.
