Control | Dead Letters True or Not?

- čas přidán 15. 01. 2023
- Hello everyone. The Oldest House contains various documents that fill out the setting, backstory, and world of Control. One of the largest recurring series of collectibles involves a department in the Executive Sector.
The Dead Letters Archive receives mail that has been classified as 'undeliverable' and brings it back to the bureau for analysis. They all have strange contents ranging from talking feet to mesmerizing cat clocks. In this episode we will attempt to analyze each of the letters and determine if they are Fact or Fiction.
Please feel free to have free discussion in the comments section below.

That Computer Program letter is heartbreaking
Sad thing is I'm sure reactions like that really happen
I would to like your comment but it is the same number of stages as the monomith, wich are very important thing for Remedy shared universe.
17 is a good number.
The real victim is at 20:45
Regarding Were-Everything, you left out one big detail about skinwalkers: in the Navajo legends, whatever form they assume, they cannot disguise their eyes. So any animal might be a skinwalker, but if you can get close enough to see its eyes, if it's a skinwalker the eyes will be human.
Very interesting bit right there. Makes it even more likely then.
I think if you get close enough to see it's human eyes it's a bit too late innit.
Guess it adds to the horror...
Oh boy new nightmare fuel.
I do not think a skinwalker would turn into a pet...
Maybe if we look in some other mythologies, like greek one, for instance there was the sorcerer Circe who can turn people into animals.
Maybe this could be the case here, if possible...
The letter seems to be written by a kid, it is probably a normal kid projecting humanity into his pet, nothing more.
@@efxnews4776 maybe theres more to skinwalkers than we know
The salamander letter is possibly a reference to Julio Cortazar's Axolotl. It's a short story in which a man becomes fascinated by a specific axolotl's gaze in a zoo aquarium. More and more he stares into the animal's eyes, until one day he finds he's switched places with it and is now trapped in its body, and realizes most of the other animals are sentient beings just stuck in their present conditions, unable to escape. If this were something similar in the Remedyverse, this could definitely be up there as a paranormal event.
Rest In Peace to all the letters that died in the making of this video😢
Poor letters. They deserved better
I still sometimes think about the singing fish that sings "devil music" and obscenities and chuckle to myself now and then.
I love that one! I'm just picturing the fish flying around and singing Ozzie
It sings Ghost
I like to believe it's Old God's of Asgard
There are way more levels to the Panopticon that you just can’t reach and the other missing altered items could be up there.
Oh 100%. Technically, there is a crowbar, cowboy boot, salt lamp, and some others we know about but there are not any documents on them. I'm only factoring in the ones we have details on.
I’m really curious about the “Crashed Car”.
@@GamingUniversityUoGyou can get the crowvar as a weapon technically
The lore of Control lives rent-free in my mind, proving the Oldest House truly is extradimentional in nature. Another great video, really well done^^
Same here lol
It can easily be expanded into a whole new franchise, comics, TV shows, films and of course more games.
The Oldest House is Yggdrasil. Technically, it's everything else that's extradimensional. :p
Facts
Mrs. Miller’s letter about Jeremy and the computer is heartbreaking. the first time I read it in the game, I had recently lost a very dear friend from suicide and it hit me like a train. Incredibly evocative writing
I actually thought that the shapeshifter could have been more possible given Neil turned into a “melted dog” after exposure to the Meadow slide in the projector. Given the projector was in the landfill, I had wondered if it had a prior owner. Maybe one that also had enough exposure to the Meadow to not just change, but control it.
Loved the guest reading. Max and Jordan especially sounded like they were having an absolute blast with their bits.
It all turned out amazing. everyone did amazing work.
The idea that a computer can edit reality is quite similar to Alan Wake rewriting reality with his typewriter
Hold up, the one thing that makes me thing the Pinstripe World letter might be real is the one redacted line. Since the rest of the letter is identical, the redacted line must have said something else, and whatever it was apparently the FBC thought was important enough to redact. That makes me think there's a chance more is going on here.
Sadly with no details it doesn't help support a true thing. On a side note I always say that redaction as more of a joke from the devs than anything.
@@GamingUniversityUoG I mean, it's certainly *also* a joke, but from an in-universe perspective, it's either a joke from whoever filed it (which could get them in serious trouble) or there was something juicy in that line.
It’s possible that it may have just been something vulgar, though I’m not sure why the FBC would give a f***😉.
Just noticed the weird line spacing down the exact middle of the page of this letter. Surely it's not a coincidence that all the lines would sync up like that?
My favorite redaction joke was when a whole document was redacted except for one line.
The cat clock almost seems like a mix between the salt lamp and the fridge
The victim can break ocular contact with the object but doing so invokes a sense of guilt and impending doom
So basically the object instills a need to look at it breaking this "ritual" forces the object to up its game by inducing further effects in the victims mind
The fact that the guy mentions the cat appears "angry" also draws a similarity to the fridge with its violent nature when not observed
It is honestly kind of scary too considering it is intended to be such an innocent object. Even novel. Innocent things that are made creepy are scary.
Dead letters has always been one of my favorite bits of the game, so I’m so glad that this video got made. Incredible work as always. I’m curious about how the Sherman/Skinwaler Ranch implications could affect the claims of the shapeshifter actor. Given that paranatural entities are confirmed to be able to wear the forms of others in some capacity (Barbara Jagger/the Dark Presence and Thomas Zane/the Bright Presence), how likely is it that they could be seeking worship or influence in other ways? Something to ponder.
It is a possability for sure. Just don't have any evidence for or against it as of now.
There's some case file regarding the Surfboard where a janitor boldly talks shit to Bureau investigators, something about cleaning shit for years and he's worth like a dozen of them. When I first read the Actor For Hire letter, it immediately resonated to that file for me. Acting was probably already his thing, so the confidence boost just translated to himself I can "shapeshift" not literally, but portray literally any role so well he would have an audience BELIEVING he had transformed.
That would be crazy if it was a method actor influenced by the surfboard.
@@GamingUniversityUoG There's a file in Investigations about The Power of the Board. You said it's ambiguous whether its about The Board (pyramid) or someone at some point had the Board and was having a motivational speaking tour because they had such raw confidence and they wanted to share it. The Actor For Hire file and the fired janitor files can together be evidence that this exhibition happened and that The Power of the (surf)Board is literally boldness. Maybe we're all nice to each other in society because we're all just a bit scared of our shortcomings in certain abilities, but The Power removes all of these constraints and makes you, well, an asshole. The Janitor is such an asshole that he fearlessly defied Bureau authority and this Actor genuinely believes so strongly in their acting that they make people think they are a dog if they're playing a dog.
Thanks for letting me join these legends for the video! Was great fun!
Any time! It was great working with all of you for this one! Cheers.
Good work!
For the Fish-Speak letter, I believe it’s actually a reference to Lovecraft
Really? I havent read lovecraft. What specifically?
@@GamingUniversityUoG The text to me sounded like it’s from the (frankly amazing) Lovecraft-inspired game Call of the Sea.
More specifically, it appears to be this nlp.fi.muni.cz/raslan/2020/paper12.pdf from Cthulhu.
@@GamingUniversityUoG Dagon, the Fish people to be specific. Also, it's a self- joke that is making fun of Finnish. Since Remedy Studio is from Finland btw
What I find weirdest about the Pinstripe suin one is what the hell did they feel the need to redact.
Dude. Enough with the jump scares
My soul left my body when that cat just appeared
So you're saying I should do more jump scares?
@@GamingUniversityUoG
Omg nooooooo
If you want to put jump scares just say in the intro that there are jump scares just to take care 😢😢😢
Thanks
In defense of "Dead Presidents": if there is one president who would be willing to show you how to fix your lawnmower, it would be Theodore Roosevelt.
I hope we gest to see more of these letters in the future. Even those that are false are still so entertaining to read.
Give him like a day with it to study, possibly. Intuitive understanding of engineering 50 years before it was developed is another thing.
@@GamingUniversityUoG Who says that you can't teach the dead presidents new tricks? if they exist on some other plane of being, they can well observe our world and learn how to fix a lawnmower.
Also, it could be another entity disguised as a dead president.
@@GamingUniversityUoGLawnmower were invented in 1830. The writer's lawnmower may have been antique. Even if it's a modern lawnmower, a lot of the same principles apply.
The Machine God letter also reminds me strongly of the Twilight Zone episode "The Curious Case of Edgar Witherspoon." Edgar has built a contraption in his basement out of junk but claims it's what keeps the world from collapsing into disaster.
The way you said Decatur at 9:49 physically hurt me
You really chose the letters for the actors that best brought out their talents. Especially Montys.
Everyone really surprised me with their performances. I loved how it turned out too!
I'm still not convinced Foot Gossip isn't the cipher key to solving all mysteries past, present and future of the Remedyverse.
Do you know what's next to the foot? Achilles' tendon. This guy is protecting his vulnerability. He is the true extradimensional being helping us.
I saw the "I'm a paid suit in a pinstripe world" letter as an homage to the shining with "All Work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy". I kind of like the idea that the overlook hotel was object of power, or something similar to the oldest house.
quick correction, it would probably be called a place of power, not an object of power,
and it is also very possible given how well known the hotel it.
The "Fake Planes" one reminds me of the "Birds Aren't Real" Movement, a parody of modern day conspiracy theories.
I'll have to check it out.
There are several power objects in one of the offices, I remember a singing fish among them.
about the white kitchen, i think it also correlates with the document where one of the restrooms inside oldest house is missing and strangely open up in astral plane, like it leaked there
i believe you can also go in that location in the game (forgot exactly where but i believe i saw it in one of the dlc, probably AWE)
Thanks so much for the collab! Always love the videos
You got it buddy! Thank you for the amazing work on this
The plaid Pinstripe letter might be considered as a affected individual of some form of cognitohazard, one that affects the speaker so that they can only say that phrase. Although your decision on it being unlikely is also an option :)
You know what that is completely fair to point out. I've done theory crafting since I was a kid and have been proven wrong more times than I care to admit. It is why I try my best not to presume facts not in evidence before making an idea. It severely limits imagination though.
LOVE that you made a video on dead letters! Remedy has lore that is so fun to explore. What I love about it is that you can almost always come up with a way that an Altered Item is involved one way or another. Like, I agree "Foot Gossip" is probably fake... and yet, what if the shoes are an Altered Item that causes people around them to hear voices unless they appease the shoes by wearing them? What if there's an altered pack of cigarettes that instills paranoia in the smoker in "Smoking Ban"? And maybe there's an altered plaid suit that when equipped, makes everyone else's character model wear a pinstripe suit?? (I mean, they exist in a simulation after all 😉)
Another great episode! 👍 Thanks.
*Edit
The White Kitchen has a connection to the oldest house. There is a restroom in the astral plane. Whether the portal or an item transported it there is lost to my memory. Yet this room is one of a few rooms mainly unchanged in the Astral Plane. Leading me to believe there is a link.
That was part of the Astral bleed for that bathroom. White kitchen is the first time we have seen something outside of the House and not associated with the board link to it. It is a weird case.
The amount of lore in Control makes my head spin and I mean that in the best way possible. It's like you're just barely taking a peek behind the curtain of reality. I absolutely cannot wait for the sequel.
I'm so glad people are still talking about this game. It's one of the few where I'm invested in the lore and just as knowledgeable of it. One of my favorite games of all time
I love how the Fake Planes guy basically ends his letter with "Don't @ me bro"
the animal crossing music with the fish language letter had me fucking wheezing, s tier joke
I wasn’t expecting to hear Monty Zander during this! What a pleasant surprise!
It'd be so cool if some of these characters would appear in AW2. Absolutely loved this video and the voiceovers. Also got to know about 2 more cool channels !!
If they get mentioned in later games I'd love it! And happy viewing for the other channels.
the smoking ban letter is interesting, referencing the cigarette packs of black pyramid, the notion that the government is making a secret deal with aliens is also a reference to the board and bureau, finally the signature is a reference to the speech pattern of the board etc.
Were-everything could be a reference to the shape-shifting actor, thus making him a skinwaler lol.
Amazing and insaane video... and what??? All of these guests are present... Matt and Jordan and Eve from hidden machine and Max Derrat and monty zander... just wooow, I really loved the voice performance of your guests, especially Jordan lol...
Really, You always give us your great and unique ideas in your videos. Your analysis and conclusion of right from wrong pulled me in...
Thank u The Dean and your your guests for this video.
The Cat Clock is probably my favourite. (followed by planes as monsters). Everyone knows the The Cat Clock, if not from real life then from 80s movies and such. The game repeatedly states that such archetypes can gain power of their own through collective unconscious, and bam, your innocent cat from Back to the Future (or any other movie) is a creepy guilt-inducing nightmare.
Jebini-rog!
That damn clock was everywhere when I was growing up
Such a great video! I honestly can't wait for AW2 to be released, just to see even more content regarding the remedy universe from you guys!
I'm going to be having a field day with all the new info with AW2
This is so enjoyable episode. I really has a great ambiance because of all of the narrators today. Interesting stories, too, especially those who we know might happened, but we cannot confirm them at all. Just the subtitles to this video seems displaced. Guess the letters changed while editing?
Oh... yes I did change the order while editing. I need to go fix that when I get home. I copied my script that's in alphabetical order this morning. My bad haha.
Does anyone else just feel like the boy becoming a “melted dog” wasn’t actually a dog and instead he was just horribly twisted into a beastly form. That is horrific.
It's a pretty messed up image
the fish speaker one sounds like a way for covert agents to communicate in plain view. Odds are that letter communicated a drop point, One person dropped something for a handler to pick up or the other way around.
what immediately came to my mind when i read the guy who tried to build the machine god was that it's a reference to the scp foundation's "house of the worm" story and also the faction "the church of the broken god"
There is a lot of SCP influence so it would not surprise me
@Gaming Universiy Hey man long time fan of your content, it's awesome to see how much you're branching out and growing. Just wanna let you know if you ever need free voice acting for even a minor character I'd love to do it!
Will do! I have a pending project which has already been voiced but I'm always looking for help in stuff.
@@GamingUniversityUoG hell yeah man anytime! also I mentioned the show a while ago in a comment I think, but did you ever get to check out the lost room? Totally understand if not, what with the busy schedule and all.
The part about ear pressure being an experience you would have only on a plane isn’t strictly true. On high speed bullet trains you will experience similar sensations in the ear since the high speed creates similar air pressure issues. Doesn’t make monster trains more plausible but it’s something to keep in mind.
Copy that. I was not aware of that. I'll keep it in mind.
Machine God is 100% a reference to the SCP Broken God. Control takes a lot of inspiration from the SCP Foundation and Broken God is one of its most popular stories.
Omg, now it all makes perfect sense! Thank you foot-gossip!!
Those feet need to use inside voices jeez
@@GamingUniversityUoG holy crap yeah! 🤣🤣🤣
Great video, as always. The guest speakers were fantastic!
They were all awesome! Loved how this all came together.
Makes me wish the letters were read out like this in game with how important they are to the lore
I think that's a missed opportunity for Control. I know it thematically works better to be narrative in Alan Wake considering the nature of the story. But hearing someone voice these is comedy gold waiting to be tapped.
@29:23 a little detail that many might not notice is the name Bowker is the Hebrew word for morning/daytime. - so keeping in theme of being awake and daylight
Very interesting. Good to know thank you!
I'm pretty sure the Machine God is an SCP reference as the "Church of the Broken God" and Mekhane is a very popular Group of Interest in the SCP universe.
I'm not familiar with the specifics most SCPs. I know I'm missing a lot of references as a result.
@@GamingUniversityUoG Well the Church of the Broken God is one of the more notable groups in the SCP verse. It has some crazy lore but it's mostly around broken mechanical parts or them fighting another group of flesh cultists.
If Remedy ever decided to add a cult in the universe then you should do some research on them. Otherwise it's probably not too relevant.
Thank you for more Control content. I’ll consume it all.
Got more for you all tomorrow
Do you remeber Nose-bleed Neil? Perhaps that could be considered shapeshifting, from Dylan telling us that he turned into some kind of dog. Perhaps that actor is not 'Ordinary'
If we knew more about what exactly caused it sure. It sounds like an affect of the Garden threshold since he got stuck there. The thing melted stuff around the slose projector.
Fffffuuuuuuuck you for the cat clock jumpscare, I almost screamed and woke up my wife watching this at 3 AM.
@14;23 This is also drawing inspiration from SCP lore and the Church of the Broken God. a religion that worships Mekhane, a metal god that gave mankind its intellect and destroyed itself to contain a god of flesh that ought to devolve humanity to a more primal state. they believed that if they brought together anomalous machines they would rebuild their deity and usher forth a new stage in technological achievement. - there was also the House of the Worm that was built by a WWI soldier who came home from war and saw visions of a "worm" that would destroy humanity, so in he dreamed up blueprints for a prison to contain it and use it as an engine to find a new world that would be safe from the evils... but the Church of Broken God stuff is way more rich in lore and relatable
Mekhane was also my first thought on that one.
I really love your Control related content. I hope you keep making these types of videos in the future.
I have another Remedy vid dropping tomorrow.
Foot Gossip is by far my favorite dead letter.🤣🤣🤣🤣
The guy really was weird but you guys totally made sound like a nitwit.
Just had to lol
Fantastic work, y’all! I definitely agree; Max and Jordan’s performances were especially impressive! Monty’s bit, being a plaid suit in a pinstripe world, was also amazing. My favorite letter of them all-which sounds so weird yet absolutely hilarious-has to be the one about fake airplanes! I can’t help but laugh at how the writer closed with “don’t contact me.” As an introvert, I wish I could put that in my email signature haha.
*Update*
Adding timestamps to the video would be very neat.
Glad to see new content and it makes me happy to hear Monty joining in!
It was great working with him again!
Your Best Control Video sooo far, Really really entertaining, thanks for the amazing work 💯
Eh nice little script you had for max derrat there. Love both of your channels
Thank you so much!
Im loving this Channel so much! All the lore within the Remedyverse is amazing!
I was just wondering if it is possible you would make a video covering the full details of the Ordinary AWE? I know there are some collectibles (I missed some ngl) but seeing it all explained in your awesome video format would be excellent!
Man. I was ready to get deep into foot gossip.
I mean we could analyze how lack of pedicures cause gossiping feet... If you like
The Machine God one reminds me of SCP's Mekhane, and the recent V/H/S/85 segment with the VR god. While the writer might be mentally ill, or an artist with an overactive imagination, I can see that being a legit extra-dimensional entity trying to gain entry into the world - although one with much less resources than the Board!
The salamander one is a bit creepy, because if you did get trapped in an animal form, how would you ever escape? You wouldn't. Unless you came across someone else who inherently understood your situation, and/or magic, you'd basically be stuck there forever. And for a very shortened lifespan, at that. That's some truly existential horror right there.
Did you ever investigated the secret Dylan Hotline call (hidden in the game files, titled "Future") and the Dylan easter egg after completing AWE DLC and all the challenges in "The Foundation" DLC? I found out just today about those 2 things! 😨
~A Wild Max Derrat Appears~
Hell yeah.
He just wandered in here lol
That's some really good reading!
They all did great work
The machine god sounds like a straight SCP reference.
We saw the Singing Fish in one of the Research offices.
Regarding the airplane one, all a person would have to see is a plane taking off or landing to know they’re wrong
Some people will find an irrational explanation for anything.
Another great, articulate video about one my favorite games of all time. I cannot wait for your Alan Wake 2 lore content. Excellent reading everyone! Impressive acting skills! :) Props to Jordon Hill for the different voices!
Once Alan wake 2 comes out in going to be ignoring all other content on focus on that for a while. Too excited I need to talk about it!
6:30 no, no, the human remains is because the monsters eat people.
Do they eat fully functioning toilets too? Because if so... gross.
Huh. Sherman Ranch is an *actual* place. Hot damn.
Oh yes it is. Lots of folklore about the place.
There was actually a book about a pet store owner turning people into pets. I think it was a Fear Street book or something along that line at least.
the Devil Fish was my favorite letter when I came across it
I remember those singing fishes all over. Now I want one that sings devil songs
Dead Letters gotta be one of my favourite parts of the game
They were fun little inclusions. Probably the department I would work for.
With the slow death of hand written letters, do you suppose the Dead Letters Archives are keeping hard copies of emails as well?
Maybe we'll see them in Control 2. Dead Emails.
the singing fish is accounted for, it can be found in the FBC
3:19 there is one more document about people who trapped into animals. Like, they changed their shape being a werewolf, but left in the form for some reason. So, I think it is possibly true. The document was found in foundation many years before this letter
This one was a banger. Great work Dean
Haha thanks dude
I haven't finished watching the video yet. I'm just over 20 minutes in but some of the stuff that people reported in were crazy!
All sorts of madness happens in these
@@GamingUniversityUoG I finished the video. Again, crazy stuff. The one that had me thinking for a minute was the guy who believed that air flight was a hoax. We know that's crazy but try this on for size. My dad honestly doesn't believe that man has been into outer space. It's all a hoax to him. He thinks that the only "true" attempts were the tragedies that happened with various space crafts such as Challenger and Columbia.
The subtitles/transcript is broken. It puts Brain Missing and Cat Clock before the Computer Whiz and all the other entries are shifted accordingly, misaligning the subtitles with the video.
It should all be fixed now. I scripted these alphabetically but edited them differently
Imagine if your feet could gossip. What would they even gossip about?
Maybe their opinions on socks and sandals.
the "machine god" article of course reminded me of the broken god mythos from scp!
I recognized most of the voice talents. Yay!
For a lot of these letters the fact that the FBC is willing to catalog them adds more to their interest than the content itself. Maybe they were just crazed ramblings but perhaps they were onto something but were off the mark/ don’t know something the bureau does
No mention that Control seems to borrow heavily from the SCP universe? The machine god part in particular seems to echo Mekhane and the Church of the Broken God. Considering it links to an SCP, I would suggest that increases the chances that it is a "real thing" in the Control universe.
I love how little time you spent on "Im a plaid suit in a pinstripe world" It only emboldens how curious the writing is.
Fantastic work - thanks so much
You got it!
The metal detector is a nightmare. The oldest house is full of them
I'd say that Pinstripe World is difficult to judge due the censored bit. It unlikely to be another repetition since it the only part censored, and that bring change the meaning of letter.
I personally looked at the redactions as kind of a joke instead of a random different set of text. But that's just me.
Great job! Also, a really cool collab!
So glad I managed to get all these talented individuals on this one.
@@GamingUniversityUoG Thank you!
And Control, yeah. Surely, on of the most favorite games & lore. There are lots of content coming with AW2...
I bet there definitely will be Animus/Anima theme with Jesse and Alan.
@@GamingUniversityUoG Also was really glad to see Max here )
I feel like I’m losing my mind because I swear I saw a cat clock in control at some point but I can’t for the life of me remember where.
About shape-shifters, do you think we will ever see Loki Darkens, former member of the Old Gods?
Honestly I hope so. It is just a plot point that never has been addressed
It might just be the way the person pronounced the gibberish but aside from the numbers the fish language sounded similar to backward masking normal sentences, like what happened to the agent sent into the mirror. I dunno I'm just waking up and haven't even had coffee yet so maybe my tired mind is making bad connections.
I'm not much for Control as a whole, but seeing funny situations with poor handwriting is still a fun distraction. You really did a *killer* job with this!
12:45 that sounds just like the Church of the Broken God from SCP
