Widor’s TOCCATA as the FIRST Recording On My New HAUPTWERK Organ [Caen // Hauptwerk]

- This is the very first recording at the console of my newly bought Hauptwerk Virtual Pipe Organ. So far it's been a joy to use the Hauptwerk setup and in this video you will hear a VERY well-known and famous "Toccata" (from organ symphony no. 5) by Charles-Marie Widor played on the magnificent sample set Caen - St. Etienne by Sonus Paradisi - a true french organ built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.
I really can't stress enough how wonderful it is to have a home organ in your living room. It gives a flexibility I as an organist haven't been used to.
Sample set: CAEN by Sonus Paradisi
Front/rear: 39/65
Pipe coupling: 111
Pipe detuning: 111
Console: Noorlander Avanti III
Timestamps
00:00 A short introduction
00:28 Widor's Toccata

All the best,
PHILIP - Hudba
Very well played, not too fast and with dignity. Caen is always a dream 🤩.
Thanks Nils-Ole. Caen truly is a dream and with the pipe detuning and pipe coupling feature you really can make it just a bit more realistic than it already is.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!! Played at a speed where the music has time to speak and breathe, all the pedal notes have a chance to sing and a flawless performance by yourself. Be very proud of this. Amazing!
So grateful to read your comment. I will keep on playing it this way!
Your tempo is perfectly matched to the sample set! Beautiful playing! And that sample set is magnificent and completely believable. We in the U.S. just don't have instruments that fully reflect Cavaillé-Coll's genius.
Hi David. Thank you for reaching out and commeting. In Denmark we only have one and luckily it is in Copenhagen. CC-organ are my favorite organ to play on!
Ex cellent! AND not played too fast. You can hear all the subtle effects of this mighty work. Thank you for this!!
Hi Gary. Thank you so much for your kind comment. It really means a lot hearing from a viewer! 🙏🏻
Thank you for playing this close to Widor's tempo (heard on his recording). This tempi gives more grandness and gravitas.
It has really surprised me how many seem to like the tempo! Thank you for your feedback!
OH WOW!!!!!! And I’d also like to add COOL SOCKS!
It’s all about the socks 😉
Excellent. Tempo as near perfect as it gets! Suits the 'acoustics' of the 'building' very well!
I really have been very pleased with so many kind comments on my tempo. And yours as well. Thank you very much!
Geweldig!!!!❤❤
Thanks so very much for your support and your kind words
Just excellent !
Perfect tempo, poetic interpretation, Widor himself'd be proud.
Dear Antho. Thank you so much for your kind
comment and for taking your time to write to me 🙏🏻
CONGRATULATIONS Philip! OFFICIALLY - welcome to the Hauptwerk Club :D And THIS is how to inaugurate your new instrument. It is beautifully made, the sound is amazing, but your PERFORMANCE - Bravo!! An absolutely perfect rendition - effortless! Thank you so much - I really enjoyed this and look forward to following your adventures!!! 😊
YES! Thank for letting me into your club! And truly thank you for all your kind comments through many of my videos. It's pretty cool having a good collegial community here on CZcams, so thank you for that!
Very well played! The sound is magnificent.
Thanks Ruben for your kind comment!
Not sure how you’re getting such good sound from what looks like a “plain” room!
Great Job by the way!
The organ that I’m playing on is a Hauptwerk organ which means that the sound coming out of the organ is sampled. Meaning that it is already recorded before hand.
Fabulous, beautifully restrained performance and great to hear all the detail through crystal-clear articulation ! Your console looks magnificent and Caen sounds great via Hauptwerk. Congratulations and bravo!
Dear Paul. Thank you so much for such a kind comment and for taking the time to write a comment!
BRAVO!
Wonderful sound !!! And very well played ! It's just magic ! Congratulations Philip !
Thanks Remi. Yes it sure is 😌
Well done. Nice sound, I love it. 👍
Thank you - yes the sound is very convincing!!
Thank you! I always tell organists that this a toccata and not a horse race!!!! Your interpretation is excellent!
Thank you so much Albert. I have been pleasantly surprised by of many seem to like my tempo. It’s hard to make a rendition of a piece that all organists know 😊
wonderful
Thank you Mark - and for stopping by my channel!
Gorgeous !!!
Thanks and for leaving a kind comment!
It sounds amazing!
YES! ;-)
Very well done. Thank you for posting!
Thank you so much Railfan - and for stopping by my channel!
Congratulations on the beautiful new console. I especially love the reverse color keys and overall look. It seems to fit quite well into the lovely aesthetic of the room. And, the Widor is played wonderfully and at an ideal tempo for the large acoustic of the Caen set. Thanks for allowing us to share in your excitement by posting this inaugural video!
Hi Christopher! I was actually pretty doubtful if it would look good because the white colored keys are so constant a thing on many manuals. But I am really satisfied on how it turned out 😅
I know that the Toccata can be played much faster but somehow the chosen tempo in the recording seemed ideal to me.
Thank you for watching and for leaving such a kind comment!
Simple beautiful! Bravo and thank you for sharing.
Hi Martin. Thank you so much for your kind comment and welcome to my channel! ;-)
BRAVISSIMO!
Thank you so much Joseph and for stopping by my channel!
Magnifique!!!
Hi Todo! Welcome to my channel and thank you for commenting!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bravo! Clear and nice rendition!
Thank you Enrico and thank you for taking the time to comment!
Wow. Just wow. Rich, deep and full sound. This is flat out astounding!
Wow back to you for that kind comment!
Great set up. Love your console. Thanks for the beautiful music. Take care.
Thank you and thanks for stopping by the channel 😌
Bravo!!! What a wonderful piece to premiere a worthy instrument!
Yes! It just had to be that piece 🥳 Welcome to my channel Dave!
Simply stunning, very well played!
Love your new Hauptwerk setup too, can't wait to hear more from it.
Hi Rob. Thanks for letting me know and for writing a comment AND for subscribing 🙏🏻🙏🏻
A really beautiful performance. The organ sounds superb.
Dear Roderic. Thank you so much for those kind words. Yes, I am really satisfied with the organ and now I can't imagine not having it close nearby. It really is a fantastic tool!
Very well done on a fantastic Hauptwerk Organ - Congratulations !
Hi Achim. What a wonderful comment to read! THANK you. I'm glad you liked it!!
Bravo. Excellently performed. I am sure Widor would be smiling to hear your performance.
Then I would be very happy! :-) Thank you so much for your kind words Charlotte!
Sounds amazing!!! 🎶
Thank you so much Phil. I will make a recording of your "danish organ piece" in a month or so ;-)
@@philipaggesen That will be awesome! Enjoy the new toy!
Nice playing and what a great sound 😀👍
Thank you so much - you just can't go wrong with Caen ❤️
Crisp and clear - exactly how Widor's Toccata should sound. Fantastic performance, Philip!
Lasse! Thank you so much. I tried tinkering with the nearly released 2.66 version of Caen that brings the option to alter "Pipe coupling" and "Pipe detuning" which gives the sound just a bit more realism. It really is remarkable that you can get that experience in your own living room!
Perfect tempo👍
You played Widor really well.
Thank you Greetings from Korea.
Dear Clara. Thank you so much for your kind words and how wonderful to hear from someone all the way from Korea!
Superb! Stunning sounds, great interpretation & playing, and the socks!!
THANKS! The socks are new and I work well with the organ 😅
LOVE the socks 😍
Absolutely stunning, my favorite "version" of Toccata on CZcams - found this yesterday, and I don't know how many times I've been playing since. Beautiful work, Philip, congrats!
Hi Sushi! So wonderful to read your comment. It really makes be so happy to get such awesome feedback. THANKS!!!
Sehr schönes Tempo👍
Vielen Dank für Ihre freundliche Nachricht 🙏🏻
I love that you are playing with socks. I know the benefit of organ shoes, but I really connect with the pedalboard with socks. This video makes me want to upgrade my homemade organ to three manuals. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
As I have grown older and older, I more or less have dropped wearing organ shoes. I want to say that it's a well thought out experiment, but it just happened over time. I really like that I don't have to transport the shoes every time I have to go to church. I can recommend upgrading your organ to 3 manuals. I really really love the purchasing choice I made a little over a year ago 😌
Congratulations on a really great performance, right from the start a lovely pace, allowing us to hear all the subtlety of the articulation in the piece, so often missed when playing it too fast and in a big acoustic. Caen is such an amazing place with that stunning instrument high at the west end. this took me right back there, thank you. I have been thinking for a long while now whether to take the plunge and update my organ, and maybe this has finally given me the nudge I needed.....
Hi Alastair - thank you so much for your kind comment. And I would very much like to recommend buying Caen. I still see this sample set as the best French CC-organ you can get. I had high hopes for Nancy, but alas, it is not for me. And thank you for taking the time to show your support :)
WOW!!!! I've just sat down to listen to this, Philip. You must be very pleased with your new acquisition. A wonderful instrument, and played magnificently. You're choice of tempo was excellent. It's only 20 seconds shorter than Widor's own 1932 recording, but it's beautifully paced and doesn't sound slow. Very well done indeed!!
Thank you so much!! I actually went on CZcams and searched Widor's own recording and you're completely right. It's actually pretty alike, especially in regards to tempo!
@@philipaggesen Yes. It's actually on my channel. I finally managed to get a copy of the original a few months ago. A very welcome find!
Beautiful sound and beautiful playing! The home organ has really come a long way thanks to Hauptwerk! Your church organ probably doesn't sound that wonderful, right? It's simply amazing! Thank you for sharing! I'm going back and watch/listen a few more times!
Hi Jon. First and foremost thank you for taking the time to write me a comment.
Hauptwerk has surely come a long way. I think that the fact that you play on already recorded sound makes it almost comparable to you sitting at the organ to record a CD/Album. Sure you don't get the tactility and atmosphere - but soundwise you get very close and that's remarkable and a treat for me, and hopefully you as well ;-)
Wonderful way of stating your Hauptwerk recordings. Fantastic playing. Congratulations!
Dear Simon. I though that it would only be fitting to showcase my joy by playing something joyful.
Thank you and thank you for your support!
@@philipaggesen hi Philip - Im very jealous - Im still waiting for my Hauptwerk console to arrive - which is looking like being late September/early October - but patience has never been my strongest suit!! ha ha! I hope my first recording will be anywhere near as good as yours!
WOW! Fantastic! Which company have you chosen to built the console? And how many manuals and and and!!? 🤩
@@philipaggesen I've gone to Nottingham Midi Organs run by Paul Stringfellow who is something of a hawptwerk deity!! Lol. I'm having 3 manuals - a built up console with 2 large touchscreens - I can't find how to send a pic on here sorry!! I'm very excited as he makes really lovely consoles.
❤️
Phillip, I think you did a wonderful job with Widor's toccata. I've heard it played at many tempos on many different organs by many different organists. This is one of the best I have heard. Not too fast, not too slow. I don't know much about you. Are you a concert organist, church organist, or do you just love to play? The Hauptwerk setup sounds great, so realistic and rich. Would love to have one of these in my home, though I don't have the talent to justify it. Probably not the $$$ either.😁. Thank you for your interpretation of this famous, beloved piece.
Dear John! What a kind comment to read. Thank you for your kind words and welcome to my channel. Hopefully I can bring you more good CZcams videos in the future! I have been moved by all of the positive feedback as to - especially - my choice of tempo.
Yes, I am a concert organist living in Copenhagen, Denmark. I finished my solist exam in 2015 and have since then been working in a small church in Copenhagen called Church of David. Now I have started this CZcams channel to reach another audience and hopefully bring organ music to more people via CZcams :-)
@@philipaggesen appreciate your efforts. In the US, the organ is taking a back seat to guitars, drums and the like. Somehow pianos can still fit into worship, but the organ is too "formal," too "highbrow." Truly, I believe the problem lies with the more complicated nature of the organ, as compared to a guitar, and the fact that Bill or Joe or whomever, picks up a guitar, learns a few chords, and thus becomes a musician in a short time, and leads musical worship time. Whereas, the pipe organ takes perhaps years of study to achieve a level of expertise compatible with leading the congregation in worship. I hope and pray the disregard many have for the organ has peaked, and it will soon once again take its rightful place as the "king of instruments.". Anyway, I digress. Thank you for your years of study to become proficient in the instrument you and many of us love greatly.
Your playing is super!
It really means a lot to me to get such kind feedback - thank you so much!!

I compose music. Also for organ. Two organists have recorded my music. You could hear it in my channel. I have more stuff that haven't been recorded yet. Would you be interested of looking at the scores?
Sure I will take a look!
@@philipaggesen
Thanks!
Could you give me an email address i could send you some of my organ music?
philipaggesenorganist@gmail.com
A lovely flowing relaxed style and beautifully played = doesn't the organ sound magnificent? I see some music on the stand by Henri Mulet. Is it the Carillon Sortie? I hope so as I would love to hear you play this work as I am sure others would too. Thank you once again
Hi Stuart. Thank you as always for your kind words. I'm afraid it's not the Carillion Sortie, but maybe I should sit down soon and learn it?! :)
Very well played and at a good tempo. Thank you.
Would you reveal which stops and couplers you have chosen? I also bought this sample set some weeks ago and would like to practice the Widor Toccata too. But I have little experience with registration of large organs. Would like to learn from you.
Sure. As I remember it I have coupled everything in beginning and pulled all the stops (minus celeste and gambe) - then they middle part you have to remove Go+Ped and remove the high-pitched sounding stops in the Go and Positif so that you get a bit softer sound. Then just before the encore you sort of go back to the beginning with full organ.
It's hard to explain but hopefully it can help you a bit. You're very welcome to write to me at philipaggesenorganist@gmail.com. Then I can help you with other questions you might have. Best, Philip
It is indeed absolutely wonderful in terms of speed, clarity, steadiness, choice of stops etc. The only "thing" is, that the first chords in the left hand "should" be more legato, not staccato.
Hey Dis. It's funny because I actually tried making a version with the approach you speak of. But for some reason I didn't followed through. So alas this version - but I'll try remembering your constructive critique. Thank you!
@@philipaggesen Actually, in the end it's all personal preference. Even the score by Widor was changed a couple of times and isn't very consistent. Too much legato isn't so good, either, maybe.
You're right. I think I might have played a bit more staccato because of the big acoustic the sample set has. Do you play the organ as well?
@@philipaggesen Hey sorry, I only now noticed this additional comment of yours. Yes, I play the organ, too. But I'm really only an amateur. I started playing the electric organ when I was 10 years old. My mother played it for a short time and therefore we had one at home. I was listening to records of Klaus Wunderlich, a German organist playing the Hammond and Wersi organ. I was able to "copy" some of his playing by only listening to the records before I started playing by scores. I then had electric organ lessons for some years but I wasn't too enthusiastic. When I was in college I had to choose between the keyboard and the pipe organ, they didn't offer lessons on the electric organ. That's how I started playing the pipe organ, too, but still I wasn't working hard to get better. After 2 years when college ended, I also stopped taking lessons, I still had the key for my local church and was able to practice playing the organ. But I only restarted playing two years later, when I met someone who also plays the organ. I listened to some pieces on CZcams and the Widor toccata was the one that I absolutely wanted to be able to play. But it's not so easy for an amateur. I was working on it for about 3/4 of a year until I was able to play it by heart by the end but then was making more and more mistakes. Unfortunately I'm a perfectionist and without a professional teacher, I always get into this routine of almost being able to play an even quite difficult piece, but then I somehow get stuck. I think, I will never make it to get it perfect and then I stop. Also, if someone listens while I'm playing, I'm so afraid of mistakes and I'm so nervous, so it's no real fun for me to play for someone else. That's a bit of a pity. I have even recorded my playing the Widor toccata but it was only a cheap camcorder with a mediocre microphone for such purposes. I put it on CZcams but can't find it anymore, it's over 10 years now since I played it. I guess, I'll upload it again to another CZcams account, not this one because this is one of my teacher's account ;-) I'm a primary teacher and use this channel for my students learning French.
Very well played. I wonder how this works with neighbors, volume wise?
Thank you so much art.nart! I more or less always play with headphones so the noice is not a problem. However, I was concerned that the neighbors downstairs would notice my pedal playing but so far I haven't heard anything from them :)
wow sounds incredible! I am curious what the price of this instrument is. It really sounds so amazingly real to the pipe organ!
It's actually not the hardware but the software that makes it sound so real. Just download Hauptwerk to your computer. Plug a midi keyboard into the computer and you can get the same sound!
With this software, are you able go control amount of the reverb? What about being able too transpose and add sustain (Bell like fading away feature)?
The way Hauptwerk works is by playing already recorded sound. The sound is often recorded from different distances from the pipe, fx. front (closest to the pipes), center, diffuse and rear (very far away) Inside the software you can mix how you want the balance to me. If you disabled the front and center and keep the diffuse and rear channels you'll get a organ sound with a lot of reverb. If you only select the close channels you'll get a sound with a lot less reverb.
Thanks for stopping by my channel and please ask if you have further questions ;-)
I am really very happy for you, however, I was a bit surprised at the relatively
poor packing of such an expensive instrument, wrapped in in what looked like black cling-film.
I know this has nothing to do with you, but I’m sure this fabulous instrument cost
enough money.
Again, very very best wishes for the future.
Excellent playing of the Widor
👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Thanks!!
Hello, I am an organist living in Korea I want to buy pedals only for foot practice, but I wonder where you bought them Thank you ^^
Hi and welcome to my channel. I bought my organ at Noorlander. I don't know if they sell the pedals solo but you could give it a try. It's at www.noorlander.com
"You might have heard before" is fabulous. This is probably the most famous piece for organ not written by Bach.
Yes, I assume you're right. It's hugely popular! Thank you!
Which sample set is that?
Caen - St. Etienne 😁
Do you play the piano? Next project: Alkan, Opus 39.
I only play piano in my spare time which isn't much :)
Not a bad sound for a virtual organ. The neighbors are going to love you, but I see you use headphones.
So far there hasn't been any grumble from my neighbours. And I suspect the headphones are the prime source for that. Oh, and perhaps also the rug!
It seems my thoughts are reflected in the comments below. All too often, this is played far too fast. There is an American woman who plays as if she is after an entry in the Book of Records - dreadful - and you cannot appreciate the music, it all just becomes a noise, particularly in a large auditorium where there is an echo and a delay. So, as always, fantastic Philip.
I totally agree. It needs to have gravitas. Very grateful to read your encouraging comment. Thank you so much! 🙏🏻
What a beautiful console and fabulous set-up you have for Hauptwerk! For an inaugural recording, you could not have chosen anything better than the Widor Toccata played on a magnificent Cavaille-Coll organ and at the perfect tempo. Sensational!
Thank you so much Graham for your kind words. I also thought that Widors Toccata would have just the right amount of joy to mark the beginning of my new Hauptwerk console. Lovely to get such gracious feedback - many thanks!
