The pouch you have your fire kit in makes a great sling shot pouch too. The front holds ball bearings nicely.
I’ve been really happy with my Hidden Woodsmen haversack. Malcolm is a really solid guy and he takes tradition designs and updates them with modern materials. Thanks for your videos.
I picked one of these up recently and made a really simple mod by unpicking the stitching in the right hand pocket (looking from inside) to give another full length pocket which I think makes it a wee bit more versatile as I can fit more into it.
OK, you convinced me I need one! And great find on that strap too. Have to resist the urge to add fastex buckles or velcro.

i got a Yugoslavian "komplet za licnu zastitu gradjana" which is basically a gas mask bag with some bonus stuff and ive been obessing over making bushcraft/bugout/emergency kits with it, these styles of bags are just the perfect shape and size for minimalist kits
I’ve got one of those that I use a medical bag. It’s a solid well built bomb proof bag. Many great uses for it. Can’t beat military surplus.
It is so easy to stuff anything that will fit into your kit. "What if, what if...." seems to pop into my head. LOL I really like your haversack and contents. I would put a pocket knife in as well. I just love knives.
Nice honest reviews on the bag and yourself, we all play the survival fantasies.lol my only difference, I carry less ways to start a fire, so I can carry more dry tinder, which is what I'll really need.

I agree for day outing we sometimes over pack stuff that's not needed, I've gone to a sling bag I found at the local army surplus store here (has molly on the side and front to add things) has enough room for a meal plus carry just the things needed for the day

Good Vid! I rig up my Haversack a little different (Canteen on the Outside, less of a Fire Kit, spare socks and some food on the inside), but carrying a small Backpack just for a Day Trip always seemed.... Excessive for me. Thanks!
I have a smaller bag I use. Seems lately I have gone to a small backpack. Unfortunately I am an overpacker...working on that. Maybe I need to go back to the haversack. But that bag is very nice. Btw got a sleep pad you recommended. Hoping to do a first ever snow camp with it soon. Finally got some snow. Great video love the way you pack and carry. Thumbs up AGAIN.

Back with an update... the Finnish bags turned out to be so cool I ended up with 2 of them! The bags are super well made and look sharp. I'd wear it anywhere in the city or the woods and still be comfortable. Matter of fact, that's exactly what I'm going to do. I'm setting one up for trail use and one for everyday carry type bag. And 5col tuned out to be some stand up guys with good products. The service, shipping, and the products were all top notch. So, awesome find on these!! And thanks for the review.
Protip: these bags are so cool AND so inexpensive, you need to buy a couple of them at least. I kid you not. Get them while you can. (I'm NOT paid, nor affiliated in anyway with any of these parties. I'm just a happy customer. I'd absolutely recommend 5col and these bags without hesitation.) ^^^ And use THIS channel's links that are up above.
I may eventually add a sliding shoulder pad to my strap. I recently found that the waist belt can be threaded under the straps, through the D-ring where the detachable end hooks on (I had to use pliers to open up the split in the D-ring to fit the length adjustment buckle through) and then around the back, ultimately clipping the hook to the snap loop. Makes a decent little bit of improvised webbing to attach lightweight stuff like a folding saw, etc, to the outside of the bag. It also seems to help keep the bag from trying to bulge open.
I also fixed the iffy snaps by putting a small piece of Gorilla tape over the outside of the female snaps and poking a hole through for the male snap-- where it used to pop open randomly, it's now so secure that I have to make an effort to unsnap.
I plan to (maybe) spray the inside of the lid with Flex Seal, so I may replace the tape with a layer or two of Flex Seal as well.
Other than that, I put a Rothco double pocket ammo pouch in the smaller divided area inside, to hold the things that usually ride there (headlamp, spare flashlight, quick-deploy ridgeline, etc).

Love your video, the way you explained your self. I have every bag you can name running from 50.00 dollars to 500.00 and to tell the truth not one of them works as good as a 20.00 dollar one. Think about that the next time you do a video on a gas mask bag

Hello, nice video that got me thinking about buying one for when I go out for day walks! How ever it does lead me to a question. When I was in the Army, we all had to go through gas training with our gas mask. In the U.S. we used tear gas (that was no fun!) but we don’t really know what kind of gas was used over where ever your bag came from. What I would like to know is if you think that it might be a good idea to wash it in the washer, using the easy wash setting before using it?
Ii like the way that you set this up but 2 things one is if you did it right you can use the thin shoulder strap as a belt strap around the waist to hold it close to the body with a quick release buckle on it to adjust it to size along with the wider shoulder strap over your shoulder for comfort and two where do you get the green thermal blankets I can only find them in orange

Also I am surprised that you don't have a few 3 mil 55 gallon contractor bags for debris mattress along with an emergency bivy or something simular. Also I know you boil water but an emergency water filter and purification tablets would help just in case I have found away to make a filter that does not take up a lot of room and weighs next to nothing and works fantastic and can be added with a 1 liter roll up canteen that you can purchase from Walmart the filter is made from pill bottles and I glue a 1 liter screw on bottle cap on that fits the mouth of the of the canteen ( roll up ) that has pre drilled holes in it.

I have recently downsized my bag back to a haversack. I've a Polish Gas Mask and the bag it came in but its not really ideal for a " Day bag" and really makes a great gas mask bag.
I have 3 rucksack type bags. One I've just started to re-use, one I've just stopped using and the biggest of them is an actual camping rucksack set up as an " Inch" bag.
You can have too big a bag and that is just an excuse to pack more into it. My " Day bag" I use to carry a flask of hot water, some camera equipment and a few other odds abd ends soon went from " Day bag" to "Inch bag" which is kinda ridiculous because no matter what I put in any bag there are things at home I really don't want to carry around with me so whatever would happen that I might be thinking I need an " Inch bag" for I would still be making an attempt to get home.
So instead of carrying all that stuff I never used everywhere, everyday ( because if you don't whats the point ?) I have ditched the small 25 litre rucksack ( Day bag / Inch bag) and gone with a haversack not that much bigger that that bag you have. I laughed when you started with your fire kit because we cannot help ourselves and your " Fire kit" is turning into an " inch bag" LOL.
I was out in the woods yesterday with my 9 year old Grandson and my dog. I really didn't need anything else. I had my rucksack with flask and coffee, milk and I did manage to get a couple of cups of coffee while we were practicing fire lighting with ferro rod and fat wood. I am a very lucky man and there is no bag or any gear that can be bought that can come close to improving my life than the simple things I already have.
I now have more bags than I can carry and I don't really need any of them. The fat wood and ferro rod would fit in my pocket and I could go a few hours without that coffee.
I wonder what a " Naturist" or "Nudist" " inch" bag looks like? LOL its funny because what I don't carry a lot of is clothing besides what I am wearing.
There's a video here on CZcams, no idea of the title but its this old guy in hes late 70's early 80's and he has survived this long so he knows what hes talking about. He reckons the only thing keeping this whole show afloat is all the preppers spending money on " Survival gear". I can't imagine what the local woods would look like after a couple of days with thousands of people " bugging out" LOL but there does seem to be this notion that if and when everything falls apart we are all going to go live in the woods, lighting fires lol. God help us. It was your comment about " useless stuff we never use and only carry around fir some fantasy survival situation" and you are so right. 90 % of the stuff I had in that 25 litre bag never see daylight.
I did justify lugging all that stuff around with, its keeping me fit, which maybe true and I had space for it and it stopped everything I did need with me from rattling around. I hate noisey bags.
Anyway, thats my life story! LOL I am just trying to make up for the lack of comments with my long winded story about 4 bags.
I wonder 3 years on which way you went? Do you still have that bag? Have you downsized again? Or did you buy a camper van so you could carry all your gear? Maybe you're far to busy enjoying the outdoors to be bothered with CZcams?
How do you guys deal with the smell of this type of bags? Surplus goods were stored for decades and they often come with a very distinctive smell... It's OK when outdoors but it's noticeable when in enclosed spaces.

I thought about that as well, have learned the hard way too always have a proper first aid kit that I attach on the outside of whatever bag I carry.
