  • A last resort Tactic you can use to close the distance on a Roosted Gobbler. It's a gamble but it could just save your turkey season.

My experience is if you get in in the pitch black and walk in real slow you won't bust them out. I'm sure they have deer walk under them all the time in the dark. If they pitched out every time a deer walked by they wouldn't be able to breed the hens because the would be sleep deprived. Lol. Secret is Pitch black early.

One year in college I raked out a trail to my treestand for archery season. I was set up pretty close to a bedding area and didn’t want to spook any deer that might have came back to bed early. It worked great and allowed me to get set up much faster. Don’t think I’d try it on public land though haha

I don't normally know the exact tree they're in as I don't get overly aggressive with my scouting.. also, often they roost in the neighbors property and I call them over to my location.. but your story reminds me of my quickest hunt EVER... I was late getting to my spot and when I get packed up I have to walk about 3/4 of a km through an open field to get to my spot.. well, I was late so about half way through the field, toms gobbling everywhere.. figured I am gonna get busted on the way in but I drove 40 minutes so I have to try.. walked in, gobblers still hot on the roost, set up and get ready … made more noise than usual too as I am in a rush.. legal shoot time comes and gobbles still rocking the trees with gobbles.. I hear this loud noise and watch this HUGE tom drop out of the trees into my decoys.. shot him at 18 yards.. little did I know, I set up about 10 yards from a roosted tom.... weighed 26 lbs, my 2nd biggest tom to date..

I did this last year and it worked. Will probably do it again this year but use a rake:)

Do you ever bow hunt spring turkeys and if so how do you set up. I have been last few years with no blind. This year i bought a hub style blind to use.

      It depends.
I don't when I get this close to the tree. I kinda of just use my palm of my hand to cover it just enough to see the trail ive made and feel my way the rest.
