A Year on 16mm Film | Serene Moments on a Bolex Camera and Kodak Film

- This film was inspired by 1960's and 70's films that used Bolex 16mm cameras to document incredible adventures in the natural world, most notably Mountain of Storms and Filmmaker/Naturalist Richard Proenneke. Throughout 2022 I brought my Bolex camera along to document some of my own adventures and created this collection of serene images. Footage from 1:34 - 1:44 was captured on Super 8mm film with a Canon 814xls camera.

Amazing footage! It was always a joy to see your footage going through the scanner!
Thank you again for everything !!
For me, nothing beats film. This is 16mm on an old, old Bolex and still, its specific warm feel and texture are unmatched by digital tech to this day. Congrats.
Jesus christ. I came here looking to see some bad camera footage but this was remarkably beautiful.
The difference IMO between this and most digitally shot videos (even with some real high end cinema cameras) is that Kodak color film has life in it. It looks organic and natural to my eye.
I'm also amazed by how much detail can be captured in that tiny 16mm frame. I've shot on my Bolex and have found that with a 2K scan, some shots rival any HD video camera, with the exception that the film also has a superior amount of latitude in adjustment. Currently I'm debating whether to shoot a feature on 16mm (which would be very expensive compared to digital) or to just try to fake film with a decent digital camera.
What a year man. Nice to see that someone is having a blast out there while the rest of us are stuck in our glass prison
Absolutely nothing compares to film. It's such a beautiful, organic medium.
my god, thousands of videos I´ve seen on yt and I think this is my favourite, just unbelievable, 00:15 is so good
after wached this i feel alive. aprecciate
It is so beautiful with such a nostalgic feeling that make me want to cry like I'm missing those experiences I never lived, but is not a bad sensation. In portuguese we call this nostalgic and melacholic feeling "saudade".
That's simply gorgeous! Every framing is like a paint!
Absolutely stunning. Can’t wait to get my repaired 16mm back
This looks better than most things shot on electronic media
this made me remember how fricken sick life is 🤙
This is stunning, there's something incredibly beautiful and nostalgic about capturing nature through film, it evokes emotions! This is what we need more of, thanks for sharing!
Your shoots can be part of a film... all of this I can imagine being in a theater-the definition of beautifulness.
Thank you!
This is beautiful, you have a real talent ✨
This is one of the best video's i have seen in a long time, made me feel warm and nostalgic. Thankyou
I can't find the words to describe how incredibly beautiful this is!!!! It's divine!!! I get high watching this footage! The film is forever!
16mm film is incredible- and so is this short piece
Wow this should be way more popular, this is amazing truly.
Fantastic! Beautifully shot. It's amazing that for all of the possibilities and advancements in film "simulation", there is still something undeniably beautiful and timeless about actual film
Wow. It is only rarely that I comment on CZcams Videos but this video (that was for some reason recommended to me on my homepage) has really struck a chord inside of me. And it's such a beautiful melancholic one.
I have been into film photography for over a year now and watched lots of content but this video was somehow different. The footage in and of itself, the editing, the sounds which you put underneath, the music, the scenes which include some areas that I myself had the privilege of being at like Pisa for example.. Its just marvelous.
You have honestly done a fantastic job at capturing the beauty of life which honestly is an almost impossible job but precisely what I want my film photography to be all about.
This video has really touched my heart. What a privilege it is to live, isn't it?
Thank you very very much. You did an incredible job here.
Greetings from Germany.
Thank you for such an introspective comment, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this and really happy knowing how it made you feel.
Inspiring. As I ponder Krasnogorsk K3, Bolex H16 or even Arri...this brings me back to my original thinking. Thank you for giving me something to aim for.
Love that. You really can’t go wrong with a Bolex reflex, mine is nearly twice my age and still kicking. It needs service now, but the last time it was serviced was 2006. Still plenty of people out there that can service them as well.
Great film, thanks for sharing it with us.
You’re welcome !!
just wanted to say this is one of the best videos ive seen in a long time :) props
Appreciate that, thank you!
Beautiful- absolutely love the colours!
Beautiful cinematography and keeping the handheld shots as smooth as possible while keeping the frames. All scenes are the moving paintings, as David Lynch would say.
Love David Lynch, thank you !
Looks fantastic.
This is a dream, it is a fantastic dream. The production quality is really good
Stunning footage mate, I hope you don't mind but I had to take a few screenshots to use as reference for grading - absolutely gorgeous. I was actually at Yellowstone and the Tetons in October last year, so they'll come in very handy. You have a great eye!
thanks for putting this together. It was so pleasing to watch 👏
Beautiful! I’ll always take film over digital.
Very nice. FILM ROCKS!

I LOVE YOUR CAMERA,AND YOUR TALENT.

Brilliant. Thank you.
Great work, Ryan. Love the sound design.
Thanks Lee!!
Simply breathtaking
Reminds me of nature books as a kid, the photographs often weren’t perfect, especially with the red hilation.
This is a beautiful video ❤
Amazing edit! Makes me want to shoot more 16mm film.

Thanks Michael!
Love the vintage look! Great work!
This is really lovely work! Makes me want more 16mm in my life.
soooooo beautiful
Thank you!!
Outstanding job Ryan. Great use of occasional over cranking, and I love the occasional addition of sound mixed in with the music for specific scenes. I definitely try not to over-romanticize film but something about this and some short films like this on 16mm just speak to the soul. So beautiful. If I was rich I'd love to shoot all my home videos on 16mm lol. Actually, screw that, I'd shoot my home videos in 70mm.
I barely every subscribe to any photo/video channels but this just swayed me immediately, and I can't wait for more of your videos.
Thank you! I'd be happy to shoot anything on 70mm at this point
This feels soooo good!!!

Wow!!! That was beautiful…!
I’m starting to get into 16mm film but I don’t know how to use the manual focus on my Bell and Howell 70 DR camera.
Thanks for uploading. It was a joy to watch!
I just got a Bell and Howell 70 DR. Measuring is key and practice, practice, practice.
Gorgeous imagery! I love your compositions. I wish some of them were on screen a little longer, though! Haha. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks - 16mm is expensive - short takes are always by necessity!
@@RyanNavazio I totally get that. I only shoot film stills, but it’s costly. I can only imagine when it comes to motion picture film.
Lovely :)
Thanks!!
one of the most beautiful films ive ever seen.
