    A quick story. A few years ago I decided I needed a daily driver that had more room and was better on the road than my Jeep Rubicon. I wanted a tough 4wd body on frame suv. It needed to be reliable, good off road, good on road, preferably a solid axle and have more room than the Jeep. I hear about these "80 series Land Cruiser things" that are legendary. It came down to a Land Rover Discovery which I had always wanted and the Land Cruiser.
    So I'm talking to my local "Land Rover Guy" and he asks me what I'm looking to do with the prospective suv.
    I say, "tough, reliable, haul my stuff, take road trips, business trips, go off road. "
    He says "so you want it to work all the time?"
    I respond, "Yeah..."
    He says, "I'd buy an 80 series Toyota Land Cruiser"
    I never looked back

      Johnathon Castro the 6.0L engines they have are damn near bullet proof along with rest of the 3/4 ton drive train. They just get a bad rap for being big and having less than great fuel mileage. I had a 2000 Silverado 2500 with the same 6.0L engine, 4L80e transmission, 9.5in 14 bolt rear axle and 9.25in front diff and it was an awesome truck. Even with a supercharger and 37in tires it was extremely reliable for how much I beat on it. Lady ran a stop sign and totaled it for me with 215K miles on it.

      Agent. K. Cost to fix is what totaled it, mostly body damage but broke a front ball joint and tie rod, front wheel, then broke a rear axle U bolt and put the rear tire in the bed side. Rocker panel was crunched from sliding over her hood. Truck did a 180* spin after she hit me. But kept the truck for -$625 out of my totaled payment that I rolled into a new truck down payment. So I still have the truck. Probably could get it driving again for around $1000 if I don’t mess with the body work. but I just haven’t gotten around to fixing it.

      currently driving A 201k mile 3/4 ton suburban on 33s , bone stock drivetrain 6.0 with 4l80e , haven't even done the trans yet , in the last month i have done a couple hundred miles on rough off road trails (hunting season). i have a clunking noise coming from the front end but i definitely was beating the snot out of it driving way to fast down some very rocky terrain so thats more of an abuse issue over reliability. also im a die hard GM guy i have probably had 5 suburbans and 3 trucks all GM , expect the transmissions to go out anywhere between 200k and 250k miles. they are ticking time bombs after 200k. but that's pretty much the only thing that will fail you despite how well you take care of the vehicle. prepare to spend $2k for a rebuild. Which is relatively nothing when you consider it will last you another 200k miles.

    • @TheDaltonmichaels
      @TheDaltonmichaels Před 5 lety +1

      do yourself a favor , have the trans rebuilt after 200k regardless of how it drives , if you do it on your own schedule it could prevent failure when you least expect it and save you on a huge towing bill. i plan on doing mine soon in my 3/4 ton. would hate for it to go out on a long road trip while towing far away from home.

      Mr. Mica might try to sell it for ten grand, but judging by all of the "Land Rovers are unreliable crap" comments that follow every video of this vehicle, it might well be a "buyer's market" if he does. I'm not holding my breath waiting, though. I suspect that Mr. Mica appreciates this vehicle for many of the same reasons I would. If it were mine, I would be inclined to keep it as long as I could get the parts needed to keep it running. I suspect he might feel the same way about it. The people I know who have Land Rovers use them off-pavement and aren't put off by the upkeep involved. One of my fly fishing buddies explains it thus: "Land Rover isn't just a vehicle. It is an all-consuming lifestyle. It consumes your time. It consumes your money. Sometimes, it consumes your patience......."

      @@belverdemotorsports2410 I suspect you really love your Land Rover because you actually use it in "Locked Low". That's what the common thread is for my friends that love theirs so much -they use low range, pretty much every weekend, to access quail hunting, fly fishing, or just cool camping spots. They shine bright enough off-road that the "price of admission" that goes along with keeping one running is worthwhile. None of my friends use them as daily drivers and in some cases they didn't even from new.

I could never tell where the corners of it were. Ha! It felt way bigger than the GMC Savanna that I did deliveries in for him.

Share most of the underpinnings just like the relationship between the Honda CRV and Element. You gain a 3rd row and have a better style for the year IMO. Reminds me of the great old XJs.

    Fun video! 😂 Sometimes it’s great to get away from the serious stuff and just go scuff up some old rigs while having fun.
    Coin toss on which is a bigger pile... different reasons. The Disco is “cooler”, but it’s also an incredibly unreliable heap, that I would have a hard time trusting more than a few miles from home (note for Roman: in truly wild places they have a saying, “if you want to go into the Outback, take a Land Rover... if you want to come back, take a Land Cruiser”... the Toyota is actually the more bulletproof globe trekker). The H2 is a codpiece, always was... but GM legit built it on basically 3/4-ton truck parts, jacked up and set up for off-roading. If it didn’t have such an image problem, the mechanicals are actually quite good.
    So which would I own? Probably put a bag over my head to keep from being ID’d, but the H2 gets the nod for bushwhacking functionality and reliability. 6-liter Vortec and powertrain parts I can get anywhere. Now what kind of bodywork camo can I put on it so nobody realizes it’s an H2... 🤔 I might have to drop 5 G’s on a Disco to drive into Hood River just so my coworkers don’t know about the guilty pleasure rig! 😜
    Or... you can burn the checkbook and do a GM powertrain swap into the Disco. Have a rig there’s no shame in, AND have it start up without mechanical intervention.

  • @94TahoeDude
    @94TahoeDude Před 4 lety

    I like both rigs. However I do agree with Andre that the Land Cruiser is tippy, not only is the body itself top heavy being so narrow and tall, but the roof wrack that is occupied by weight is causing a lot of potential tip... unsafe as far as I'm concerned. I mean I've got a lifted k5 blazer and I get nervous in that. Cant imagine the nerves you get when you drive that
