Fun facts about the Latvian goalie you pointed out because of his name (Gudļevskis): He's the only player in history to play in ECHL, AHL, NHL, Olympics, and IIHF World Championships in the same year. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2013 and that was the highest a Latvian goalie has ever been drafted in the NHL.
Amazing. That probably also set a record for "most distance travelled by a hockey player in a single season".

as a fan of neither sport, i do love that the one where you have to touch the ball down to score is the one where it isn’t called a ‘touchdown’
Kind of like how the other sport is called football but only one position actually kicks the ball lol

Jomboy reminds me more of ESPN circa early 2000’s than ESPN does now.
The city of Breda in The Netherlands has a team called NAC. Which stands for; NOAD-ADVENDO-Combinatie. Which stands for; Nooit Opgeven Altijd Doorzetten - Aangenaam Door Vermaak En Nuttig Door Ontspanning - Combinatie.
So thats a 5 letter city, but a 92 letter teamname.
This is the winner. Here's a translation to what the team name means:
Never give up, always keep going, Pleasant through entertainment and useful through relaxation, Combination
My wife who is Dutch says this looks like a lot of old club names, as they always had sayings like that, especially with combination at the end. And it looks like NOAD and ADVENDO combined in 1912.
@@PapaVanTwee5That sounds like Galaxy Quest: “Never give up! Never surrender!”
Wow, I always thought that was just a club founded by a corporation or something (ala Leverkusen).
There's also Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands. So they have messages of support for avians as well.
great comments guys, you all win
I love the sportmanship from the ladies in the Way Too Close segment
Me too. I had kind of a weird spontaneous feel good tear up?
the fact that they cared more about checking on her than figuring out who won was really sweet :)
It seems a lot more common in women sports.
5:22 I actually watched this race live on tv and it was amazing race. To answer your question JB they go by who torso hits the line 1st. Your feet, head and hands don’t matter only your torso needs to cross 1st.
Who knows the rules? Joe knows the rules. Thanks Joe.
They made this rule to be fair to track athletes who have missing limbs.
Why dont they naruto run for the last second then?
How do they measure the runner in lane 6 who is twisted sideways? Does the outside edge of her shoulder count as torso, or do they have a guess at where shoulder stops and torso begins?
I believe they look at the shoulders during photo finish. Aka. "torso", but really the shoulders.
I watched my older brother at an away meet not just knock the hurdles down, but kick out the top crossbars the entire race, and still got 2nd. The home team tried to get him disqualified for it, but it wasn't against the rules.
The home team had tried to give themselves home field advantage here and there, so he gave them something back.
Yes, first point anywhere on the torso to cross is deemed a finish.
Correct. Torso usually shoulders but sometimes the chest.
Kind disappointed Jimmy didn't know that 🫤
Agree with everyone dropping the word "torso" in the comments. We're slightly in front of the finish line, but the frame just as the video's clock goes to 5:25 is probably the closest to what the timing crew would have used (they see thousands of frames per second while we only see 30 on the video replay). Lane 6 did a great job turning her right shoulder forward but Lane 7 is still very slightly in front.
I ran the FinishLynx for a few years before we started hiring it out to bigger outfits (with better gear). In one of the races, a girl won based on chest size. Everything else was lined up evenly, but one girl was probably a C/D cup while the other was probably an A. Seemed totally unfair, so I called the meet ref over just to look at the picture. He confirmed: front of the torso and that's part of the torso. The crazy part is that it determined who advanced to the final.
The ump was eyein that plate like the last slice of za
Track and field rules, ran D1. First Bib and or chest to cross the finish line is winner
So you could just get giant breast implants and make it much easier to win?

This has become one of my favorite shows that you do. Please keep them coming!
Never planned on watching the Rugby Try…. College game was 🔥… won a state playoff game off a similar missed base call. Coach trained everyone on the bench and field to watch the bases get touched. It was a thing we were taught at a young age.
The contrast between the homer and the arena touchdown is hilarious. Like "oh hurr durr you gotta touch home" then "ah screw it he caught it touchdown"
Not quite what you are asking for but my hometown in England has a rugby club with the name WHTDSOBRUFC, which stands for West Hartlepool Technical Day School Old Boys Rugby Union Football Club!

The Quad Cities for what it's worth is a little region on the border of Iowa and Illinois representing 4 cities (some say 5). You have Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa, and then Moline and Rock Island in Illinois (some people also include East Moline). The Steamwheelers technically play in Moline. So sure a "short city name" but it's actually 4 cities across two states!
It’s weird that they had the score bug as “quad city”

Wish these were twice as long. Def fan A. Thanks for putting these together!
Yeah? Well I wish they were THREE times as long.
5:34 I know the rules and it goes by torso, which normally means shoulders.
The tags they attach to their chest have GPS trackers in them. You wanna get the tracker across the line so it is your chest that matters. However, I ran some races where you had to attach it to your shoelaces so in some cases it is your foot that has to cross.
Dude, love your track commentary. When it comes to finishes in track, they go off of when the chest crosses the finish line.
I remember when ESPN showed Australian Rules Football every day for a while in the '80s. I was only in elementary, but I remember having a favorite team and loving it.
surely it was the black and white team
That indoor football catch was NICE!
@jomboy you know why it’s called a “try” ? Really cool history of the point-values in rugby. Also. You have to touch down a try and you don’t have to for a touchdown in American football

Title of this series never truer, I never planned on watching these but glad I did !
0:55 Question because I’m curious: When is a runner considered to have missed home plate on a home run?
Like if he missed it and the catcher was right there with the ball and tagged him, would it be an out? If he was in the dugout and his teammates told him he missed it, could he run back before the next at bat starts and have it still count?
If there’s an official rule someone could point me to, I’d appreciate it. Also, agree that it should be an automatic run regardless if he touched the plate.
just had to tag the base he missed but usually they dont wait for the next batter...
@@tstrupp24 Yes, they do. They can't appeal the missed base until the ball is live again, and it's not live again until the pitcher has the new ball and the umpire says the ball is live. Then the pitcher has to step off the rubber and throw to the appropriate base. It has to be done before the next pitch, though.
No runner may return to touch a missed base after a following runner has scored. And when the ball is dead, no runner may return to touch a missed base after he has touched a base beyond the missed base. That means a batter who hits a ground-rule double or a homer can be called out on appeal if he misses first base and doesn't correct his error before touching second.
Appeals must be made before the next pitch or attempted play, or before the entire defensive team has left fair territory if the play in question resulted in the end of a half-inning. The appealing team must make clear their intention to appeal, either via verbal request or another act that unmistakably indicates its attempt to appeal.
If the catcher was right there with the ball, then it wouldn't have been a home run, so that's kind of a weird question. On close plays at home, yeah, the runner has to actually touch home plate. If a runner missed home plate while the ball is in the field and they throw it home, the defending team could tag the runner out I guess. Not sure I've ever seen that at home plate, though similar things have happened at other bases.
When the batter leaves the field is when he officially is out. Once you leave the field you can't return.
With a home run I see no way for the catcher to have the ball, it was deep in the construction zone in this case.
This video reminds me of ESPN's debut coverage on September 7, 1979. I love it.

The game is called "BASEball." Touching bases is so integral to the game that it's NAMED AFTER THEM.
TOUCH THE BASES.
And I love little technicalities like that if you're in the crowd. Did he touch home plate? I didn't see him touch home plate. Another guy says he did. The umps are converging to discuss. It makes the game more interesting if you're there. On TV, you just want to know the result.
The game is called "FOOTball." Kicking the ovoid ball is so integral to the game that it's NAMED AFTER IT.

In T&F, it's the chest passing the finish line.
Lane 7 had a ridiculous burst on that last stretch. Incredible
That was a BEAUTY of a goal!!!
Glad to see rugby getting the recognition it deserves.
it's when your chest crosses the line for track races
It’s the first body part across the line
@@chubbrock659 No it's not. If that were the case, lane 6 would have won because her hand crossed first.
It's the torso that counts for the finish line in Track and Field. That's why diving is a bad idea because it actually pushes your torso (chest) back away from the line.
As an avid rugby fan that was a tasty lil chip up and under kick for the try!

You can tell by #7’s body position when Jimmy paused it as they’re going over the hurdles, that she was going to catch up to the two girls who were both already over their hurdle, but had bad body position.
I only have my honor to verify this statement, but I did guess correctly in the women's hurdling race. Pink/yellow (#7) had so much forward momentum in that freeze-frame.
Haha! I predicted the right runner when he paused! Lane 7 FTW!!
