When planning a rock hounding trip to Utah last May, we were going to skip this spot until we saw your video. Thanks for first surprising us and then inspiring us by revealing the beauty hiding inside the cut banded calcite. We even made a video of our trip @greybearoverland and show what polished cabs from these rocks can look like.
It's some really good material and now that I know more about what is good from that location I will be a little more picky next time and try to find the perfect rocks.

Rocks. *snort* I love love love calcite. The waxy feel, the shine it can get. Lovely display pieces. Sure, it's a bit soft for rings and belt buckles, but it's great for a pendant, wore up close to the throat, or earrings.
Hey Jared, I have some precious Mexican fire opal with color play. They are stunning. I had them in the same jar they where in when I got them. How ever, that tin lid leaked and turned the water they where in, into a gross black crud that leaked into the water and stained the precious opals black and they smelled bad like, sulfur I guess from the tin lid which was black. Honestly, I was like it f"n figures, I wanted to cry, this would have to happen to me. I apparently didn' know they where so poress and the seller never said anything about removing them from, said container and water. I wasnt going to give up on these precious opals, and i am obsessed with all opals, potch, and common opals to. I love the many colors they can be! I soaked my opals in dawn with water and I kept changing the water every few days, for about a week. later the black crud eventually came out with the amount of dawn i used!! out of the precious Mexican fire opal started to clear up and I was so happy and greatful! But maybe soaking the calcite into dawn and change the water everyday. It worked for me!
Fabulous material. Ive found a similar calcite near Calico CA. All white, grey, and black. Ive tumbled it. Will now plan on cutting some. Loved the bad joke. I was shaking head right along with Sarah!
@@CurrentlyRockhounding It did tumble well once i figured out that is Mohs 3 and needed a shorter protocol. Mohs testing kit - another helpful tool I learned about courtesy of @ Currently Rockhounding

We were just in south of Nephi a few weeks ago at Yuba Lake. I hope you were able to go there, too. Unfortunately the reservoir is very low, but because it's so low, there are a lot of rocks exposed that otherwise wouldn't be.
I really like that area down there, it seems like you could really have fun wondering the hills and looking what is out there. I would recommend this location for next time you're in the area.
Just went today to that site, though I took a wrong turn on the trail and stopped a bit shorter. Still found some great material and left with 3/4 of a 5gal bucket full! I'm looking forward to cutting and tumbling it to see what's inside. Perhaps I'll return another time and go to the same location you collected at, but taking less material (my arms are SORE!). She seems a bit shy but I think she’s got a lot to offer here & I always appreciate a woman’s perspective just as much as a man’s, and let’s not forget she does have a good eye at spotting nice specimens. Seeing the scenery makes me miss Utah bad!..bangs canyon!.. u looking for that calcite made me think of Kurt and I chipping out mica. What an awesome video,great finds!..keep the Utah videos coming bud!
Dish soap and warm water, let it sit a few hours, rinse and repeat as needed. I save some softer stuff for the trim saw. Clean the oil out make my cuts a little slower with water. But it limits the size of the rough.
They say not to judge a book by its cover! Holy smokes! That was gorgeous when you sliced that chunk. Hahaha, and people say rocks look pretty much on the inside like they do on the outside. You've showed thats definitely not always clearly the case. I liked the specimen at 10:45 alot also. My best friend just moved to Utah, so, I'm making notes of all these awesome places you are hounding at so I can hopefully check out a few for myself when I visit. That scenery was just breathtaking!!! 🤩
Try some automotive wax & grease remover, or prep-solvent, to get the oil out of the rock. It's what we use to get contaminants out of the metal surfaces before primer & paint.

Not that it would cut that large of a piece but that Loretone combo unit you have would make a great water cooled saw for material like that. I need to finish setting up my homemade 8" water cooled saw. Awesome material.
I mentioned before, you might try soaking in Acetone to pull out the oil. I use water with the drop saw I showed you, and put Crystal Cut in the water to keep stuff from rusting. Don't like the oil smell. I learned as you have, you go a far away as you are planning to go to collect, and work your way back. I made that mistake once. Started picking up rocks yards from the vehicle and ended up a 3/4 mile away with 100+ lbs in my backpack and 40 in the pillowcase I was carrying. Brought out apx 2 tons of agates on my back and in that pillowcase. My phone said I covered 6 1/2 miles back and forth.
First, what a lovely location to be hounding, those views were very nice. Second, you have to love when you know right away that you need to high grade, there was so much material there! Third, I'm shocked at how gorgeous those pieces were that you cut. That really exceeded any expectation. I like that each has a really unique character with the varying colors, crystal size, and patterns. Great video, thanks for bringing us along.
This location is really high up on my list of places worthy of a return visit, the piles were so big that you could just flip rocks for days and find amazing material if you wanted to.

Beautiful spot! I think it's great that you mentioned filling up your buckets then dumping them out to make sure you actually only take home the best. I learned my lesson a few weeks ago when I carried my haul a half mile back to the car only to find a bunch of my first finds of the day that should have been left behind, whoops!
If youre near salt lake, if you're willing to part with like 3 lbs, Id love to use some of this for some tumbles. For softer stuff like calcite I use a vibratory tumbler and it usually turns out great.
I'd like to cut some of my calcites but I'm concerned they'll fracture along their own planes of fracture. Are your specimens in a different formation? They cut perfectly!
That's a good question, this material is pretty solid it would seem but I also have some calcite that isn't. You should email me a photo of what you want to cut.

I really like stuff like this where taking it home is a bit of a gamble cause you really need to cut it to expose the material.

I still need to work on my combo unit, too many projects, not enough days.

They really don't react that much under the UV light, its a pretty mild reaction to be honest.

could you wash/soak in water with dawn dish soap to get rid of some of the oil and smell? thank you guys for the tips and taking us along
It seems like the best thing I have found so far is just an extended bath in the kitty litter.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding yup that is what i figured, some oils will still smell even after using dawn dish soap, and end up back in the kitty litter
I got my 10" Hitech yesterday. Took six weeks to get here. The initial cut faces are totally flat. I can barely see saw marks.

Your banded calcite looks different than ours...
Calcite can take many forms.
Onyx or banded calcite what is the difference? Whatever it is beautiful "!
They are two completely different rocks but because of the appearance of bands people misidentify them.
I have lots of this, however, it's a lot of crystals.
It's really lovely material.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding agreed. You're finding much nicer sized pieces, as mine were used as landscape rock and I just grabbed a bunch 😂
