  • Today we meet Laura who had been living in her Kia Soul for 2 1/2 months at the time of the shooting of this video, and she is loving it! She was making a good “living” at her government job, but found that she wasn’t really truly alive, just enduring life. She decided that life shouldn’t be an endurance contest, but it should be a source of joy and freedom so she made the decision to live off her savings and get out there and go!! Her first thought was to buy a van, but then thought, “Why not give the Kia a chance, maybe I’ll like it?!” So here she is-so far so GREAT!!

Many people want to work and have things but many of us just want to live and experience moments and ditch the things, society tells us that's not successful but I'm happy were beginning to ignore society.

Yes!! I left the federal government early on with no pension benefits. I stayed in touch with my friends who stayed for the retirement pay === all of whom ended up with disabilities such as illnesses, cancer, even car crash-related injuries. At 73, I'm healthy, free, still working to supplement my low SSR payments!! I am very happy with my decision!!

Best thing is to do what you love...then retirement is a blast too. I was raised to work for what I wanted, sacrifice if you want something bad enough. I worked 33yrs for govt and happy I did. Was able to retire at 56....best life choice ever. Having goals gives meaning to life....Small goals, larger goals, but they are yours to choose.

I was about to make a plunge and purchase something bigger but if you can do it Laura, so can I. Last year I traveled for about a month in my Kia but I had a makeshift sleeping arrangement that wasn’t all that bad. I too had a great time seeing different things. I agree no one thinks anyone is sleeping in a Kia. I didn’t get any knocks.

A Kia Soul electric can be left on overnight with the heater or A/C running and use very little of the traction battery. It can be charged on house hold current or in any campground plugged in to where campers and motor homes plug into 220 with an adaptor using a portable 220 charging cord. I've slept in my Soul EV many times camping with the car turned on and the climate control running. XM radio playing. my fav station. EVs would be great to live in.

Thank you for sharing this! I found it to be very encouraging. I am 64 and recently just realized I did not want to go one more day at the job I was working at. I was trying to make it to retirement, which would have been in Sept 2021, but hated my life and the mundane existence I was living. I had purchased a 5th wheel about a couple years ago, and sold my house, and parked the 5th wheel on my daughter's property in Ramona, CA. But eventually she convinced me to sell it and just live inside. I wish I would have kept it, but still enjoy living out in the country with my daughter, her husband and my grandson, and my three English Bulldogs. I watch alot of videos on van conversion and RVs and constantly think of doing something like this, but was a little afraid of being out there on my own. I also am an artist and hoping to start to do this, as it is something I truly enjoy and feel I have somewhat of a talent for it. The problem is that I have so much art equipment that I even found it hard to keep in the 5th wheel. My current room at my daughter's home is filled with art supplies. Not sure how to downsize this. Thank you for your videos. They are inspiring.

Elaine Ruiz - you can do it girl!! Parting with your art supplies can be surprisingly difficult! Just take the essentials and store the rest at your daughters house. If you find you really need something then that would be a good excuse to visit the daughter. Also start with some short excursions to figure out what you really need or can live without. I hope you dump your job and LIVE a little! Good luck👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I love this channel, and feel that Bob has helped a lot of people in a great number of ways; whether it be in their quest for freedom, or in dealing with hard times. I myself have wanted to hit the open road for a number of years now, but various obligations and circumstances have prevented me from doing so, and I say that without regret. With that being the case, I really appreciate the opportunity to share in these adventures vicariously. Still, I cannot wrap my head around the entire concept of actually living full time in something as small as a car. I know, "Different strokes for different folks" and sometimes you simply have to make do with what you can afford, but I can't imagine actually *aspiring* to that degree of minimalism. When I see something like this, I ask myself, what's next ... How To Live In A 55 Gallon Drum? But then I realize that these travelers are a lot tougher than I could ever hope to be, and that what confuses *me* might possibly inspire others. So I take my hat off to them, and wish them well.

I've thought about this a lot, myself, and always try to remember many folks have LIVED with even less - no vehicle at all. I'm not to that point yet, but I am about to head out in my SUV. Luckily I have the means to afford some elements of comfort - fridge, solar, etc., so I'm excited and grateful to have that, and to be retired and have SS to rely on (for now at least).

Zippered pillow cases can be so helpful because they can serve as storage for clothing or blankets, but can also be used as pillows :) What I like to do is put my things in a waterproof zippered pillow protector and then place that inside of the other zippered cloth pillow protector, that way my clothes or items inside remain clean and I only have the wash the outside cloth pillow cover :)

Things stopping me from doing this? I don't have enough $ saved up, my husband is the type working to survive, and we both are the legal guardians of our autistic adult daughter. She's high-functioning, and we're all hoping she becomes independent and are working toward that. If I didn't have all these situations, I'd pack up what I need and the bare minimum of what I want and take off! I dream about this all the time but don't know how I'd survive monetarily. I don't want to do odd jobs, I want to do my metaphysical business on the road but don't have a clue how to go about that either. I'll keep dreaming (and maybe scheming) toward a happy ending, whatever that looks like. Thanks so much for these videos with many of the ins and outs of this life. Stay Healthy!

Look up Robin from the Creativity RV youtube channel. She recently released a book called "Work From Home While You Roam". It's a resource for ways people can make money while living on the road - some of them from a phone/computer, but many other ways too. She probably has suggestions for ways to make money using your current business model - I just haven't read the entire book yet, so not sure about that aspect. Good luck!

Valerie the Witch Buy a sleeping bag and camp stove and if nothing else go out for the weekend to Federal Lands or state parks and camp off grid. You might decide that lifestyle’s not for you, especially if you’re using a bucket for the toilet and handiwipes for a shower. Then, too, you might adapt to it like a fish to water. Personally, if I managed to get my old fat a$$ on the bucket, I might have to have a dragline lift me off, lol, so that’s out for me. Good luck to you.

Keep dreaming and scheming! I've done that for about a year and a half now - hit early retirement age about a year ago, and intended to leave then. Unfortunately, life intervened and needed to work a little longer. Then I lost my job right after SS kicked in. I figured I'd find a part time job to save up for a build-out of my "escape vehicle" - that didn't pan out either. Then, out of the blue, I rcvd. a letter notifying me I had a little stock in the company I lost my job from. It wasn't a gold mine, but selling it provided me enough to cover my needs to hit the road. Perhaps the universe was listening?!
