Thank you for informative info. Can i plant the hostas just with root inside pond water only? Or do i need to pot them with soil? Also, which plants can be bought that will last yearly for pond? Or do you have to purchase every season? Thank you

You can just plop them in the water and put some gravel or rocks around the base to keep it in place or you can pot them as well! Whatever you prefer. Also, perennials depend on what zone you're in but for us in Nashville, we are zone 7 so our pond perennials can include things like Water Lilies, Thalia, and Lotus!

I have a spring fed pond in Texas. Muddy, mucky etc. What plants would be best to put in there to improve water quality and for critters and life etc?

Hey there! We're going back through comments we haven't replied to and making sure we touch base with everyone. Thank you so much for watching! Just in case you're still wondering, here is a quick list of pond plants that help filter impurities from pond water: water iris, water hyacinth, water lettuce, hornwort, pickerel rush, watercress, canna, water celery and taro.
Other things to consider, do you have any kind of filtration on your pond?

hi Jamie, i live in the uk and wondered if you can tell me if 15 inches is deep enough for a 5ft x 3ft pond . The pond itself is a ready made one, also can i have fish in it and how many and size. thanks and hoping you reply

Hey there! We're going back through comments we haven't replied to and making sure we touch base with everyone. Thank you so much for watching! It is a general rule that ponds should have at least 2 feet of water to avoid algae build up, plumbing issues, or creating a mosquito thriving environment. When it comes to adding koi or goldfish, the rule of thumb is 1-2 koi or 2-3 goldfish per every 200 gallons of water. So depending on how many gallons of water you have in your pond, you can add fish accordingly. A couple things to keep in mind though! Fish in ponds are easy prey to big birds so it is also recommended they have a fish cave they can hide in or put your pond under trees so the canopies can keep them out of any bird's view :)

Where did you get the black mesh pots for your lillies? I thought you had to fertilize them every 4 to 6 weeks..so they don't decay....how do you that?
My water lillies are actually causing my algae! The string algae clings to them and then spreads throughout. But I haven't fertilized them..so that could be it??
Do I need to pot the inpatients or just plop them in? Are they safe for koi? Are hostas safe for koi?
Will water lettuce and Water soldiers survive zone 7? I'm in Nc and I'm zone 7b. Will they come back every yr? I'm looking for ANYTHING to clear my water. I have a 300gph water pump that has a filter. I have 4 solar powered bubblers also with filters. I have to clean the bubblers 4x a day because the algae. The pump I have to clean 2x a day. I cannot clear my water 😭. I have 2 koi. And 2 water lillies that are NOT helping. Their a hot bed for string algae.

      Hi Jessica!
First let's address the big problem, the string algae! Lilies, fertilized or not, don't typically cause string algae unless there is an overgrowth of plant material in the water. Usually it is a combination of minerals from the rock/gravel and excess fish waste that cause it. You can use EcoBlast www.aquascapeinc.com/products/ecoblast to dissolve the string algae in about 30-45 minutes and then consider adding an Iongen to your pond to keep the string algae from reforming. Here is a video we made about Iongens if you'd like more information on them: czcams.com/video/aTEw2nORDbw/video.html And here is a video about how to maintain your pond to keep the water crystal clear: czcams.com/video/QqAP7i5sMFE/video.html
Also something to consider! If you are feeding pellets to your fish, take a break for about a month. Fish food you buy in stores is like their ice cream. All the algae on the bottom of the pond is their salad. If you encourage them to eat the algae, you keep both your fish and your pond happy and healthy. The pellets should really only be fed to them about once a week at max.
Okay let's talk about Lilies! They do require fertilization but not so they don't decay, it's to keep them growing strong and healthy! There are pond plant fertilizers that are time released and last for up to 6 months. So when you pot your lilies, you can add that fertilizer to the pot and basically "set and forget" the fertilizer. Alternatively, there are dissolving tablets you can push down into the soil of your pond plants and those are needed every 4-6 weeks. Less of a "set and forget" fertilizer haha
Check out this video we just put out about how to pot pond plants, it might answer some questions you have! czcams.com/video/16KQXse7D_M/video.html
The mesh pots are aquatic planters from Aquascape: www.aquascapeinc.com/products/aquatic-lily-planter
Impatiens, hostas, coleus...any water tolerant/loving plant can just be plopped into the water (in its original container is fine) as long as there is a little nook you can secure it in so it doesn't become a 'floater'. Impatiens are non-toxic to fish but hostas can be. If you have a falls or stream where the fish are not able to access, this would be a great place to plant those!
Lastly, start adding Beneficial Bacteria to your pond www.aquascapeinc.com/products/beneficial-bacteria-for-ponds-dry After your pond gets a good cleaning, add 2 scoops every day for 2 weeks and then go down to 1 scoop a week the rest of the year. This will help keep algae from building up and keep your pond from turning into 'pea soup'.
Let us know if you have any other questions! We will be happy to answer them!

Is the ecoblast safe for koi? It won't kill them will it?
Is the beneficial bacteria safe for koi?
The pond I have is actually a water fountain that has a big round 8inch deep base that you have to fill with water to feed the spouts from the geese for the water to come out from. Its not an actual huge pond lol. I think the width of the base is like 35inch/40inch. It's a big round base. Big enough for 2 koi, a few water plants. I don't think I have room for a skimmer....lol. like I said it's like 8 inches deep ha. I have a small fountain pump that feeds the spickets for the water to shoot out from. So because of that, can I still use the eco blast? And the beneficial bacteria? If so..because I don't have a super deep pond, HOW can I use it?
I did not realize that fish food is meant for once a week 😳 oops. I wonder if I just bought the water lettuce it would cover most of the water and prevent algae? Because the water does get full sun all day until about 6 or 7 at night.
The info on the lillies is extremely helpful, THANK YOU. I can probably repot them in the mesh bags this winter when they go stale mate. So I won't kill them. And then buy those fertilize pods.

@@Jessiepie221 Yes Eco blast it safe for Koi. You just have to make sure you follow the directions on the bottle and use the recommended amount.
Beneficial bacteria is completely safe for Koi as well. It’s an organic product that removes nitrogen from the water and helps with nitrite and nitrate cycles.
Water lettuce and water hyacinth are great as floaters to cover the surface of the water that helps with photosynthesis, shades the pond, and reduces algae growth. Aquatic plants will use the nitrogen in the water as a food source and starves out algae.

Koi fish eat the floating plants

    • @JVISecretGardens
      @JVISecretGardens  Před 2 lety

Koi will usually nibble at any plant material that goes in the pond. If you don't want them to eat the lettuce or hyacinth, try putting them in your biofalls or in a container tall enough the fish can't reach.

I have a lot of big koi in an old 20' x40' swimming pool. I buy laundry baskets at the dollar store, zip tie 3 small pieces of foam to the rim, and throw 4 or 5 water hyacinths in each basket. That keeps the big fish from eating all the roots and gives the babies somewhere to hide. The plants will grow over the side and hide the baskets. Good luck.
