You ask an interesting question considering just how unpredictable various NHL teams' trajectories often turn out to be. An Oilers' Stanley Cup appearance appeared unlikely as of last November but even in May things still hadn't been looking good with a 3-2 series deficit to the Canucks in that conference semifinal. The Canucks took a huge step forward last season compared to the one before that, with a much improved blueline and quality of goaltending. There's no doubt they'd needed a competent backup to Thatcher Demko, which they'd gotten in the:
- regular season with Casey DeSmith and Arturs Silovs
- postseason mostly with Silovs after DeSmith and Demmer had gone down to injury
Given how closely I follow Canada's NHL teams (given where I'm from and have always lived), I will focus on those teams in this post with, going from west to east, the:
- Canucks I see in the mix for a top-3 divisional spot with the Oilers, Golden Knights, Kings and maybe also the Kraken
- Flames I see finishing in the bottom-10 on points
- Oilers in the same mix as the Canucks in the Pacific Division
- Jets in the mix for a top-3 divisional spot but with likely tough competition from the Stars, Avs, Preds and Utah Hockey Club at a minimum
- Leafs in the mix for a top-3 divisional spot but with likely tough competition from the Panthers, Bruins, Bolts and Wings at a minimum
I hope my flames finish 31st would really accelerate our rebuild
But that Habs have their first round pick and this year lmao
@@matthewmichaelmoniz8490top 10 protected tho, so it would become floridas first round pick
@@theamazingg3773yeah, the flames pick is safe unless they over deliver and get 11 oa... Which would be a very flames thing to do
@@matthewmichaelmoniz8490 no lol they get flroidas, its top ten protected and they will instead get floridas first. Have fun with the 31st pick bud. keep dreaming
@@matthewmichaelmoniz8490 nope. The flames have 3 1st round picks this year. The Habs get the lowest one.
I am very surprised with how the predators were aggressive with free agency
The Bruins have more depth forwards than I initially thought at the start of last season. Justin Brazzeau, Matt Poitras, John Beecher, Marc McLaughlin, all good players with something to prove. The Lindholm addition is hopefully good, and the set plays with Pasta off the faceoff should get a lot better. October can’t come soon enough!
Will be a fun season no matter what, I'm looking forward to Freddy, Kastelic and Zadorov keeping Panthers on best behavior
Danggg, quite surprised to see the Flames ranked second last. Interesting but also surprised.
I think your overlooking how much debrusk replacing mikheyev changes things. Petterson could have easily gotten 25-30 more points if mikheyev didn't fumble everything he was given.
Also given the leafs history, they are a 1st round exit 10th place team regardless until proven otherwise.
I'm not a flyer fan, but you are way wrong about their status for next year. They added to an already good team, that means they are on the rise...good coach, proud franchise, re- think it ....
The Hockey Guy predicts the Flyers finish last.
Come on man, realistically who are they jumping in their division?
The sens were 26-7-3 when they had over a .880% from their goalies. They had the 32nd ranked goaltending. They also had a crazy good record when Stutzle, Norris and pinto were 1,2,3 down the middle. They addressed their needs, I can’t see them being a bottom 10 team with this year’s roster. More likely 15-20 range in my opinion.
Wow, that stat is pretty mind-blowing, especially when you consider that .880 is nowhere near league average.
12th is about where Vegas has been slotted on average so far. Really the big name leaving is Marchessault. The others good luck in your future endeavors. Carrier only played 39 games. Stephenson played out of position a lot this year so the writing was on the wall. Thompson was a bit of a surprise, but he requested the trade. Another name other than Marchy, would be Amadio. If only they could have found a way to keep these two. Martinez age was catching up to him, Mantha was just a rental, Cotter just didn’t fit, good 4th liner in the Carrier role but not much else. I feel Hill, Samsonov, Schmid are greater than Hill, Thompson, Patera.
Now the other additions of Olofsson and Holtz, these two could surprise some people. Olofsson has scored 20+ goals in 3 seasons with Buffalo and reunites with Eichel. Dorofeyev is a break out candidate as well as Brisson who is still eligible for the Calder.
Defense is still strong, even if they trade Theodore or Whitecloud. Kaden Korczak can easily slot in for one of those guys. And They are still strong down the middle.
They have gone from being the 10th oldest team to the 10 youngest team in one off season. Better to start now shedding cap space and age instead of waiting like the Penguins.
I do believe that Vegas could be in on someone like Zegras, Elhers, Robertson (from Leafs) or Laine. Only time will tell.
Honestly, it's virtually impossible (baring injury) for the Sharks to not be better this year. The brought actual NHL players in. The will still be at or near the bottom, but improved.
Panthers at one? I mean I’ll take it but I won’t lie and say that for me at least I would put them at like 2-5 tbh because I want to see what are the lines are for the bottom 6 that aren’t E2 and Lundy. Same with 2nd and 3rd pair D-Men along with Knight being the likely backup to Bob. I do think that there’s a lot of questions about those spots then what most people like to talk about. I have confidence no doubt but those are just my main concerns as of right now
Bob is also a year older
And they just made two cup runs in a row. More then likely the team would be to gassed to do anything.
Pred Avs games will be exciting to watch again. Also, the Avs are going to need to trade someone away to meet the cap...probably Girard
Everything being new & positive, with an enthusiastic crowd behind them, Utah will be the biggest surprise.. They have quietly built a good team. Oilers will make a deep playoff run, they now have the experience. The Leafs should be interesting. Berube will have to really sell his style to this roster. I'm hopeful the Habs will improve more than most think, not playoffs yet but knocking on the door.
commenting before i start the video: I genuinely believe the capitals will be a playoff team again this upcoming season. we addressed most of our needs and improved on both sides and got a great goalie tandem with Thompson and Lindgren. i dont expect a stanley cup run, but we will be back.
I think you’re right about my Avs but if (big if) we get both healthy Landeskog and Nichushkin, with Kovalenko and Calum Ritchie showing up we might surprise everyone
As a rangers fan, i think the isles will make it. For the better half of a decade now, they're always counted out and excepted to miss but they always seem to somehow just squeak in. The chemistry between all of guys in genuinely underrated, and they always seem to lock in during that final stretch of games and find their way in.
As a Penguins fan, I do feel that Pittsburgh will compete for a Wild Card spot. Having said that, we are in a retool or rebuild based on the signings and trading for Kevin Hayes even if Dubas isn't saying it. On paper the Predators are better, but I want to reserve my judgement until I see the on-ice product and how Stamkos and Marchessault fit in.
Nashville is in cup or Bust mode. Expect them to win soon 24-26
They’re giving me the 2010’s sharks vibes
They’re probably wayyyy overhyped
I didn't expect that in year 2 of Trotz's tenure, that's for sure!
Bruins fan here rooting for them. Josi deserves a cup
@@edited1325and just like the 2010 sharks they will lose again to the canucks
I want you to be wrong about the sabres but being a long term fan its hard to stay hopeful lol
For who improves the most...I hate this because I don't know how many times I and many others can be tricked, but it SHOULD be Ottawa. Ullmark alone SHOULD be massive and they came from very low. Devils are the safe pick here, but a sleeper pick is the Kraken, though they still have the same exact glaring issue in net, so I'm not really sure there.
For who drops off the most...hard to say honestly, but I'm gonna go with either the Kings or the Canucks. Isles maaaaybe as well.
EDIT - Let it be known I posted this before watching the video, so if I end up echoing anything in the video, sheer coincidence.
i expect big drops from Boston and NYI this year methinks
@@cyn_citrusBruins will be fine the top 4 in the Atlantic hasn’t changed
@@edited1325 i suppose, still have a gut feeling though
Man I hope my jets bounce back after our awful playoffs
The Bruins drafted 2 players who are no longer in the NHL,ahead of Kyle Connor 🤔
Outside of the bottom 3 teams I see many teams that could make a surprise run. I do think Flyers and Blues are going to regress.
Sharks are obviously going to not be the bottom feeders no more. Good Players acquired Nick!
Hawks had a great off season
I'm a Preds fan. I think they'll make a run, but I'm not sure how deep. I think they should have kept Lankinen behind Saros. He had a pretty good year. I'm waiting for them to call up Askarov from Milwaukee.
I'm curious to see if we hear of any interesting trade proposals from teams looking for an upgrade in goal.
@@TwistedWristerHockey Me too. There are rumors going around that Askarov may end up being traded since they now have 2 goalies to back up Saros.
Nick i just got a david pasternak jersy in the mail LETS GOOOOOO
🍝🐻👏
Wooooooo
New Jersey should make the playoffs
Hopefully the blues can do good next season
Neat
go catsss
I don’t buy into the leafs and I really don’t understand how someone can (no personal offense).
The core 4 is still there. And they’ve proven time and time and time and time and time and time and time again they haven’t gotten it done when it matters.
Until that changes, this team is going to have the same results.
I totally respect your take 👍 I don't expect to pick them to win the Cup, but I think they have a lot right going for them when looking at where they could finish...in the regular season 😆
Calgary Flames traded or players left as bad as if there was a fire 🔥
If I’m a Calgary fan I’m hoping for dead last for a couple seasons. Get them good picks.
GO utah h c. And isles are always stuck in the mud as a middling 16-20 team that needs to bottom out and get some high lottery picks.
Bring the NHL back to Minnesota !!!
Predictions: Devils will be top 10 again and a major threat in the East, Bruins will drop and Sabres will finally make the move and finish in the top 16.
no, no, no, with all the respect. The Sharks are not gonna finish 32nd next season, sure the rebuild is still going, but that roster changed drastically because in the 2 recent years Grier used the roster is a cap dump to take bad contracts and gather picks, literally wasting those 2 years in a way of bringing in players that are not staying, so now he got rid of them and brought in an actual NHL additions and not just skate an AHL roster just for the sake of growing prospects in a safe place while dooming the NHL team, now he's making the moves and inserting those prospects in. On paper they're already better than Ducks (didn't do anything to improve in offseason) and Flames (starting a rebuild) that's for sure 100%, they're still likely to be a bottom 5 team, but they're not finishing 32nd because this time they actually have a roster. Last year they had Eklund-Granlund-Zetterlund so they had 1 second line and 3 fourth lines, obviously they finished 32nd with that lineup, but you can't look on the future roster and the one they finished with and expect them to finish at the same spot.
I think you are going to be completely dumb founded by your Sabres prediction.... Ruff knows what he is doing and will get the Sabres to an easy playoff birth this season (look at Ruff's track record)
The devils will be a top 10 team next season as long as they have better injury luck next season. If they have great injury luck they’ll be top 5. Jack Hughes’s shoulder injury, really derailed his production. Timo Meier was playing on like two torn MCL’s or something. Dougie Hamilton was gone all season anlso sieganthaler missed 25 games so the INTIRE top d pairing was missing for like a 1/3 of the season. Nico Hischier was out for 10 games while jack was injured. Not to mention they lost a really good fourth line Center inMike McLeod for off ice reasons. Plus, there’s absolutely no way that their goaltending is as catastrophically bad and their defense should be substantially better. It was truly one of the single most bad luck seasons I’ve ever witnessed
They’re just gonna get injured again
You should be in the just make the playoffs boat right now. You shouldn’t put unrealistic expectations.
You need logos excel sucks for a video format.
I like that idea 😎 thank you
Don’t count out the Golden Knights. ⚔️
Probs the worst power rankings I have seen. But it’s all opinion I guess.
Hot take Utah makes the playoffs
