  • A presentation of images relating to Saddleworth Mills. Looking at Saddleworth’s villages it is now difficult to imagine that years ago they were working villages.
This presentation using images from the collection of Saddleworth Museum and the ‘Old Saddleworth’ collection of Peter Fox records many of the mills that have gone.
If we have contravened copyright on any of the images we apologise but hope people recognise that this is presented at no profit.
Saddleworth Museum is run as a registered charity and should you like to help us promoting interest in the history of the area we do welcome donations.

I worked in lots of these mills when I first left school .My first wage was £3 -75 pence per week this would include Saturday morning. The conditions were pretty dire with long hours and a 7-30 am start. The noise from all the machinery was deafening and the dust was unreal. You had to wear a head scarf all day as the fluff and grease from the wool made your hair lank and smelly. Your choice on leaving school was office work, mill work, shop work, no career advisors or college choices then.
