A lot of people think that its a slur because years back on the internet there were alot of videos/posts saying things like "cis-scum" and all "cis people should die". That was when I first heard the word and I thought it was supposed to be derogatory and offensive.
So if peoples only encounter with the word is in that context, it makes sense why they wouldn't want to be called that. Its not always because of transphobis.

Kinda unrelated to the video, but last night my mom went on a rant about she doesn’t care who we love, she just wants us to be happy. So yeah I might come out as a lesbian soon.
Honestly, i have been needing that video to understand that cis is not used to force any idea of "you're 100% ok with being a woman", but to notify an unequality in rights, facts written in the laws. I loved your video, really made me smile all through. I am cis and never really got the word so far, but you genuinely explained it with so much charme - I feel way more complicated being called cis now. So thanks :) You‘re awesome.
I think some people need to understand that for a lot, to change views is very difficult. This is still funny though and Jamie is so nice in the videos while being savage and being the TRUTH.
@@Lombarsi True. But some changes are both good and necessary. And if the only reason you can think of for something staying the same is “well, it’s always been that way” then there’s probably no rational reason for it to remain unchanged.
Me learning the term cisgender: Oh there's a term for that. Ok. Do I identify with it? Not really, but I don't really identify with "mammal" either. Doesn't make it an offensive or unnecessary label.
It took me some time to find out that the term Cis exists, but honestly I am glad. It always made me feel so uncomfortable when I tried to distinguish between Transgender and Cis and had to use the term "normal" (or similiar) instead, because I did not know how to name it.
Hear me out. Of course being cis applies to biological males or females, by nature of definition. I think the problem comes with a descriptor being imposed externally on someone who doesn't identify with it. Like colonists used to call black people "negroes" (which also had a neutral meaning and wasn't purely derogatory!). Now I completely get that that's an inadequate comparison because (in the case of modern history) blacks were oppressed by white people as were trans people by cis people. However, I would think that we can do better than holding up a double standard, as in allowing the minority to impose words on the majority while not allowing the majority to reject those. Just like we allow the minorities to choose their own terminologies they want to go by. I for example accept that you would call me a cis female, but I would not call myself that.

In fact, we don't even have to create a slur for transphobes If you don't like the terminology you either don't understand it and don't want to (just plain dumb) or are a transphobe ( just a bigot) the cis prefix can technically be used to describe many things besides people and has been in the past

The world has told me I am “different” and need to fit into other boxes with different labels. So I appreciate your view point and explanation which has again educated me. I still do not want the label “cis” just as I don’t feel the need to be called gay. The world need them to feel safer I think, but thank you for being a regular educator of mine.
The same thing is happening with some gamers. When VR kicked off, people needed a way to distinguish between VR games and non-VR games. They came up with "flatscreen games" and then consequently started calling gamers who don't play VR games "flatscreen gamers". For some reason, some people were pissed about being labelled as flatscreen gamers, even though all it meant was that they played games on a flat screen... It's illogical. Just as illogical as being pissed about being called "cisgender" because you aren't transgender.
That’s why I thought that some people would have a problem with being called cis. Because it sounds like “Sis”, AND because it’s right around the corner from “sissy“. But “cyst“? Not all people want others to know what they are nor is it really anyone's business unless said individual wants to tell me. We can't demand something of others we don't do ourselves and we say not to out people. That that's not our place. So it would be fantastic if someone like you could help out a bit with that, giving me a chance to finally learn. Thank you. ❤️
Thank you so much for making this video! I honestly had no idea that cis wasn’t something offensive, because of people saying it was. I just don't like having people put a label. I am a woman. End of. No need for a prefix. I respect your option to be trans, you can respect me not wanting you to use the word cis. 🤷♀️ don't know why that's so hard for the trans community and supporters to get their heads around 🙄
This! And then I see women saying "I don't have any problem with being called 'cis', it describes who I am", but I don't need a word to describe who I am. That's the issue, not that we're transphobic, we just don't want to get involved/sucked into their little imaginary world where anything has to be labeled to exclude yourself from the rest of the world💀 I accept truly 100% transgender people, but there are sadly alot of people transitioning and later finding out it was a mistake who don't get talked about, at all and then more young people thinking or even worse, being told this is the solution for their mental health issues, it is not...and it is also not a lifestyle to be 'transgender', which is what some make it seem like.
@@-amyxx2964 tell me you don’t actually know anything about trans people without telling me you don’t actually know anything about trans people. There is plenty of scientific evidence that supports the existence of trans people, and that trans people are born trans. There is a difference between a male brain and a female brain, and while for the majority of people their gender and their biological sex match up, there is plenty of evidence to show that there is a mismatch for trans people. Since it is impossible to change the brain, transitioning so that the body matches what the brain is experiencing is the correct thing to do to treat gender dysphoria. And the regret rate among those who transition is less than 1%, so while there are detransitioners, to act like they’re a huge group is simply inaccurate. You can’t claim you respect trans people while simultaneously demonstrating through your comment that you know precisely jack shit about trans people and are simply regurgitating fear mongering bullshit you probably heard from a gender critical idiot who also knows jack shit about trans people. Next time maybe do some actual research instead of just reinforcing your own factually incorrect biases.
Literally the community is full of hypocrisies… they’ll beg us to use their preferred pronouns but they won’t accept that we as a fact NEVER AGREED to be called cis.
Exactly! I used to hang out with a club that was formed by my Trans friend. They also let transvestites participate and allies. This was early 2000's. They never once called me cis. They never ever just called themselves women either. They would say I'm a Trans woman's or I'm a transvestite. It wasn't that hard and they didn't see the terms as slurs or bad. I didn't feel that way either. Now all of a sudden, we have to be called Cis women. I get where the term comes from, but why do I have to change saying that I'm a female or a woman? When did the younger generation decide Trans was so horrible even? Ok, so now you just want to be called women or men. Then actual biological women and men have to say cis in order for us to identify as biological men and women. Make it make sense.
i really appreciate how you brought up the "not blonde, just a woman" thing bc it describes it perfectly. cis and trans aren't things needed for daily life but like you said there comes a time when there's a need for description
Personally I think one reason why people might not like being called cis (I do not have a problem with the term, and I find it helpfull to be able to make the distinctions, just want to mention that) might be because it's a relatively new thing to use to describe people in society in general ( I know the term is not new). I remember the first time I heard the word, I did not really understand it and found it a bit weird that someone would use it to describe someone who is born and identify as their personal gender, because it was new to me as I'd never heard it before. Some might find it uncomfortable because they feel like there should not be a need to have term to explain a cis woman or man. So I sort of get it. I don't think all who are uncomfortable with it are transphobic though (at least they may not mean to or be aware that they are)
I think the reason I don't like being called cis is because it is another way to downplay women. Respectfully I want to know why trans men and trans women are not happy with the term trans? Many acknowledge they are trans but want to becalled women or man leaving out trans. I respect everyone and what they do is their business. But if we start calling trans women, "women", it will start to take away natural born women's rights and privacy. Many words are old but cis women is very unnecessary as the word women is strong alone.
How can we have equality, without making subtle changes to our own terminology. When homosexuality was illegal, people didn't have to declare they were straight, but you don't hear anyone complaining about being asked that question now. The cis/trans thing just needs time to filter in to society properly.

It took me some time to find out that the term Cis exists, but honestly I am glad. It always made me feel so uncomfortable when I tried to distinguish between Transgender and Cis and had to use the term "normal" (or similiar) instead, because I did not know how to name it.
Normal is the correct term.
How about woman/men?
Saying “I don’t like the word cisgender, so I’m not cis” is the same as saying “I don’t like the word human, so I’m not human”
But are these transphobes human? They don't act like it…
Hear me out.

2) I never insinuated it was a slur. Just like I mentioned "negro", which used to be used in a neutral way too, "cis" can be used neutrally. Depends on the situation. Either way, I would never consider myself a victim of words. Even when people like you call me either dumb or a bigot. I'd just consider that tone deaf.

That's the issue, not that we're transphobic, we just don't want to get involved/sucked into their little imaginary world where anything has to be labeled to exclude yourself from the rest of the world💀
I accept truly 100% transgender people, but there are sadly alot of people transitioning and later finding out it was a mistake who don't get talked about, at all and then more young people thinking or even worse, being told this is the solution for their mental health issues, it is not...and it is also not a lifestyle to be 'transgender', which is what some make it seem like.
They're all fighting the grammatical "cistem"
Cis ain't a slur.
Sincerely, a cis girl.
i really appreciate how you brought up the "not blonde, just a woman" thing bc it describes it perfectly. cis and trans aren't things needed for daily life but like you said there comes a time when there's a need for description
I’ll decide how I identify. Im not trans or cis.
I’m normal.

Can we please let this "nobody" shit die? It was never funny.
This Cis Bisexual woman does not find those buttons "feminist" in the least 😤
How can we have equality, without making subtle changes to our own terminology. When homosexuality was illegal, people didn't have to declare they were straight, but you don't hear anyone complaining about being asked that question now. The cis/trans thing just needs time to filter in to society properly.
If ya want the world to respect you respect them. If someone doesn’t want to be called cis just respect their wishes.
Not duck just bird.
Because duck sounds like a swear.
this tbh
This comment is so ducking underrated.
