The death camp in Karasjok - and the good helpers

  • During World War II, 4,060 prisoners were sent from the former Yugoslavia to Norway as slave laborers. 2398 of them lost their lives. Most died in five prison camps in northern Norway. One of these was in Karasjok. In this camp, over 70% of the prisoners died within a few months.
    While the camps were subject to the German SS, unimaginable torment and pure extermination were one
    significant side of operations. During this period, a number of Norwegian prison guards also worked there.
    Norwegians who did not stand back for the Germans in terms of abuse and cruelty. Over 90 percent of these prisoners were Serbs, and many of them were sent to Norway as part of a genocide.
    In our time, Norwegian schoolchildren travel with White Buses to Auschwitz and others clay to learn from history. But we also have a gruesome history in Norway that few know about.
    In this movie you will hear eyewitnesses tell what treatment the Serbs the prisoners received in Karasjok, more than 75 years ago.
