  • The Alishan Forestry Railway (Taiwan) Shay 14 was donated to the Puffing Billy railway by the Taiwan government forest bureau in 1972. It usually sits in the steam museum at Menzies Creek, but for the Puffing Billy open day on October 3, 2010, it was moved out of the museum and displayed on a siding at Menzies Creek station.
This video shows it being moved back to the museum and was a rare opportunity to see the Shay actually moving.

@jbrunsonjr It is rather unusual I guess. A US-built loco that worked in Taiwan, and is now preserved in Australia. This one would rarely get moved and usually sits in the museum on static display. So it was indeed a treat to see it moving, albeit by a diesel. Unfortunately restoring it to working order would apparently require a total rebuild. It was damaged in the move to Australia.

Apparently the frame is in need of major work it would be cheaper to import another one from Taiwan than rebuild this one the cost is prohibitive to repair this one tho I would love to see it steam its useage would be limited

What a shame. I have been fascinated by Shay's for years. I'd love to see one in steam...

@@EeBee51 I'd waited a long time as well. Finally saw one in steam last March - in Taiwan too.
I'll get around to editing the video eventually.

Don't understand the working theory of a gear driven steam locomotive?? Does it save weight, increase power, allow for a smaller boiler. I noticed the ring gear on each set of drivers. I assume there is a pinion gear driving the ring gear but I see a number of straight cut gears mounted on the driveshafts???

I think the idea is that they're better on the roughly-laid track and tight curves of the kinds of lines they ran on - which were often logging lines. It would also spread the weight better, has all wheels powered and perhaps has less vibration without the side rods being spun around from horizontal cylinders.
