A lot of riders have trouble keeping their hands quiet and independent in the saddle. We all want to have soft hands and not to interfere with the horses’ mouth but this is easier said than done! Watch a video of yourself riding and study what you hands are doing. In an ideal world, your hands should appear relatively still and passive, however often this is not the case! Even I have been horrified to watch a video of myself riding by all of the extraneous movements that my hands are doing!
Here are a few tips to keep your hands still while you are riding:
    1. Keep your shoulders, elbows, and wrists soft. Often when riders are told “keep your hands still” they tighten and stiffen all the muscles in their arms. This will only make your hands bounce even more because you are on a moving animal and your hands and arms must absorb the motion of the horse!
    2. “No seat, no hands.” If your seat is not solid and absorbing the motion of the horse, your hands are going to bounce. Focus on improving your seat and staying connected to the horse in order to keep your hands quiet and steady.
    3. Following elbows: your elbows must bend and straighten as you are riding in order to keep a steady contact. Watch the video and I will explain and demonstrate this!
Finding a steady contact and independent quiet hands will make your horse a lot happier! Remember that your horse has a metal bit in their mouth. Any extraneous movement or bouncing that your hands are doing is translated onto your horses’ tongue with a piece of metal. Quiet and independent hands will improve your overall effect as a rider and the happiness of your horse!!

I want to comment in case this helps anyone else. At 7:30 as your hands are following at the canter you say "forward, forward, forward." It took me years to figure that out, as in my head I was thinking "forward, back, forward, back." Everything changed when I started thinking of only following forward and in my head I just say "forward, forward, forward" as you demonstrate.

I’m coming back to dressage riding after a 10 year break from riding. I started riding as a kid, had my own horses and competed regulary, but stopped when I was 18. I feel like I’m back to square one, which may be a good thing as to solidify my knowlege and correct any problems I may have not known about before, as well as having a slightly different body to work with. I feel like I’m so rusty right now, and that I am struggling to find my balance and use my core effectively, which in turn effects everything else. My instructor and friends have said that I just need to ride more to get everything back on track. I’m trying everything I can to increase my knowlege, correct my problems and improve my riding in general, and these videos are so incredibly useful! It’s so true how everything is connected, and one problem can lead to another... lots of food for thought and so inspiring!

Nice! I'm just learning how to ride English from learning Western for all my life. Right now I'm just getting starting with Hunt Seat related things, but I've been using your videos as a sort of base. I am self teaching myself, with moderate supervision from my trainer to make sure I am learning correctly. I am also working with a very green horse, and I have yet to teach him proper canter cues and how to listen to my hands/body at the canter. All our canter work was done in Western. Should I get him okay-ish at cantering in Western, and then in English? Or should I just try to ask him in English and see what happens? Any comments or recommendations or tips or any of the sort would be highly appreciated. :)

    • @cm3455

Can you attach stirrups to your bareback pad? they're useful even in sitting trot just so you can feel how to shock absorb and relax through your ankles. I find that once my ankles are relaxed and floppy it moves up my body to my hands.

I seem to have steadier hands when cantering. Have thought of getting a grab strap when riding Aces but dont want to waste money getting this if it still won't stop Aces from shaking his head...

Great question. I would talk to your instructor about this behavior. Since I can't be there to see exactly what is happening, it's hard for me to tell you exactly what you need to do. A grab strap can help, and I also recommend focusing on improving your seat. As your seat gets better, your hands will become quieter.
