Good on you Kevin. In 1945 just after my Dad mustered out of the RCAF he visited the US consulate in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and enquired about emigrating to the US. The representative at the consulate told him that because he didn’t have a sponsor or a job offer in the US he would have to save up $25,000 cash and bring proof of that to the consulate before he would be allowed to fill out the visa application. It took him until early 1955 to do so and even after filling out the paperwork it took another year and a half before getting our entrance visas and in November of 1956 we finally traveled to and settled in Santa Ana, California.
My wife and 2 children emmigrated to the US 20 years ago. I set up business and did well. We did it the legal way which took about 2 years. I wouldn’t advise anyone do it these days. I have had friends who are very accomplished engineers apply to come to the US and turned down because they could take an American job. Just think about that.

As a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam Era... I haven't had stable housing since 2012 and go homeless for 4 months after renting an old Summer cottage from late summer to late Spring, for the last 4 years. Where are they putting all these illegals? No one on this planet should be homeless or hungry. I can't find stable housing, I can afford, let alone keeping my run down 2001 truck going. When I was at a homeless veterans community near Mobile, Alabama, it was mostly young veterans from the Iraqi and Afghanistan conflicts plus some of us from the Vietnam Era. We would go out and find them in the woods living and try to have them come and stay with us but many didn't want to, which I could understand. Thank you for your caring ways and kindness. Yea, I’m 52 and working homeless. The plague shutting everything down got me evicted fr a home of 11 years with credit score of 703.
I was told that my mediation with the JP court; that was scheduled for the day after the inauguration in 2021; was closed from the “threat of” Jan 6th violence, so it was postponed.
Six days later I got a judgement in the mail because even tho they were “closed” the staff had worked from home and filed a judgement against me and I had ten days to get out.
I could only take three duffle bags with me and had to leave everything else.
I’ve had to move FOUR times in two years because in my state there are no available programs for me if I’m not a victim or addict, I’m just poor and struggling.
The first place (unstable fam member) pulled a glock on me; next place decided to not tell me they were months behind in rent and on the electric bill (two days after paying rent, there was a lineman on the porch saying they were going to shut it off), they had random tinder dates walking in the door of a home we shared, which included this woman’s 15 year old daughter and physical fights between the mother and daughter.
I paid more money a month to get out there and in with an older dude who seemed ok until I realized he maybe had other ideas and put cameras up facing all the doors (so, not for security but mostly on me) and having gotten a hard “no” on anything other than a landlord/tenant situation he liked to slam all doors; cabinets 24/7 and after a plumbing issue, woke up to him cutting into the floor of my bedroom with no notice so that now there was a huge hole and even less privacy, which he didn’t fix completely for another three weeks.
I am currently paying $800 a month for a bedroom and to share a bathroom with three other adults and SEVEN dogs.
I got a work from home job in March 2021; I’ve gotten two promotions and four raises but because rent has gone up 42% in two years and the judgement tanked my credit, I’m stuck in these horrifying situations with people taking advantage of desperate people with no hope for a way out.
BUT if I’m understanding this correctly, if I catch a greyhound; cross the border back into the US then I will get free healthcare (I’m paying $185/mo); get a free flight to NY; put up in a nice hotel and get free money for food, cellphones; clothing…. I think Maine is now offering a free house.
As a working American I get no help, all the taxes I’ve paid for services and help since I started working at 15, aren’t really for me when I need help, specifically, after a global/national shutdown which was created by the government.
