  • After a few hours of wrestling with "modern controls" for the Tomb Raider Remastered collection, I can conclude that it's not really that bad of an implementation. Also, you don't need to do a backstep in order to setup for a 4-tile jump. Just setup at the back and you'll do fine.

      As noted in the description, it took a few hours to get used to modern controls, but I neglected to mention that I had an entire childhood to spend on playing TR1 on my PSX. The recording on the left took about 5 tries to get right, but the recording on the right took 1 try.
      I'm not really up for arguing about which control scheme is better, I just hate to see both written off as either "badly implemented" or "outdated" when they're clearly fine for playing Tomb Raider.

      @@SuperTopmasterThanks for the context, but I'm a little confused by that, why did it take so many attempts with modern controls? Does it not feel like a typical platformer or was it more about it being in conflict with your muscle memory... maybe a bit of both?

    • @SuperTopmaster
      @SuperTopmaster  Před 5 měsíci +8

      @@tyclips4155 A big part of it was the controls feeling more restrictive than a typical 3D platformer. The restrictiveness includes having a delay in Lara's jump, losing a lot of control in the air, as well as a big delay when starting a running jump. Jumping also behaves differently if you input (Jump -> Direction) or (Direction -> Jump), meaning order of inputs matters. Now I don't play a lot of 3D platformers, but taking into account running distance, air turning speed, and input order for a singular jump is pretty hardcore for one.
      The "big delay" I've mentioned earlier is the reason why so many people are so accustomed to being able to backstep on tank controls. Lara needs the run up in order to make a 4-tile jump, so I started just spinning her in place when I used modern controls instead of trying to setup a backstep.

      Same here. I'm currently playing through TR1, and I've noticed that modern controls allows me to be more careless in my platforming skills, while tank controls forces me to consider each jump. You can also backflip by holding LT/L2 and pressing jump immediately followed by back and side flip by pressing left or right. I find modern controls far better for traversal but is a bit hit and miss (literally) during combat. I played the OG games back on PS1 and find the modern controls better for the most part. Considering that you can only reliably backstep when Lara is facing toward or away from the camera (not looking to the side) and couple that with camera issues at tight corridors/against walls or ceiling, I just end up not recognizing "backstepping" a reliable option during a platforming section and I end up relying on Lara being able to turn on a dime with modern controls.

    The demonstration is not very accurate. Tank is only better in this demonstration because of the mistakes made on the modern side. Modern is actually faster, but less precise - however, that level of precision is not required for the assault course.
