This video is all about making buttonholes in knitting. They can be vertical or horizontal - simple or super sturdy. I am to provide you with tons of different options so you find the perfect buttonhole for your project. I start with a simple buttonhole for beginners, and at the end I also show you a wonderful double-knitting buttonhole and quite a couple of vertical buttonholes - even a reinforced option that doesn't wear out that quickly.

I have been avoiding projects with buttonholes, but no longer, thank you for making them feel possible!
They certainly can be tricky but...glad I could help you along 😮💨🥰
I love that you leave in the times when you split the yarn, drop the needle, "miss" the stitch, etc. Makes me feel much better when I do the same! 💜
Haha. I mean, I typically edit out most of it as I feel too much of it is kinda disturbing. But these small bits, I sometimes feel it actually helps ppl to fix these kinda problems 😊
@@NimbleNeedles Couldn't agree more! You always hit a good level
😂 The moment I realised the armholes I knitted for my dog sweaters are just large buttonholes. Danke for the alternate methods, Norman. I plan to do cardigans for the grandkids next.
yeah, very similar! i have a pattern here for fingerless gloves where the thumbhole is, essentially, a buttonhole as well :)
Norman, you never disappoint!
You are truly intelligent & knowledgeable.
Your videos are well presented (lightning, background, timing, etc). The material you teach ( because you don't just "wing-it) is well researched, well timed, well presented (in a non-threatening or superior attitude). The whole experience is geared to help us understand what, why, how, when, etc.
THANK YOU for being a virtual mentor & for the seamless presentation, ty for always being well prepared & for presenting more than one way to work a given method.
my pleasure
Very useful. I tried to do a button hole for a leash opening on a dog sweater. These are cute ideas for embellishments as well.
Splitting the yarn and asking "What did I do here?" is the best description of my knitting experience sometimes 😂
🙈🙈🙈
Excellent video, and so well-timed. I am about to do the buttonhole band on my first cardigan, probably tomorrow, thanks.
Make sure to test things first and then I an sure you will be alright 🥰
I absolutely love this buttonhole! I use it for the thumb opening in my fingerless mitts. Thank you Norman!
Glad you like it and my video could be helpful!
Thankyou Norman. I’ve been knitting for years but always struggle to make the buttonholes look neat. I’m knitting cardigans for summer so this video is brilliant for me now.
You make sure camera angles are right and you go slowly enough to follow easily.😊👍
you solved my problem again Norman, without knowing it. I was making a tunic sweater in the round accidentally when it should be flat front and back, but now i am using your button holes for my neck opening , saving the body in the round on a cable and flat knitting the top area (front and back continuously) and joining with the "button hole" neck/ shoulder on the fold.
that's one big buttonhole ;-)
Thank you so much for this. I always struggled to make my button holes look tidy. Can’t wait to try your techniques❤
Definitely give them a try. Maybe knit a lil swatch and see if you like the results first 😄
This is the best buttonhole video that I've seen. I'm having a problem with buttonholes not being tight enough. I think your techniques are awesome and will solve that problem.
I sure hope they do!
I am not a fan of cardigan patterns because of buttonholes. One pattern was enough for me. Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial. As always, you make everything look so easy. I am so glad I found your channel a year ago.
glad you are still with me here on my channel. sounds like I did something right ;-)
I love this video! You make making buttonholes so easy. I’m going to try out the techniques for a vertical buttonhole for my next sweater. Thank you.
Please do..and feel free to tell me how it went 😊
Dear Norman, I can't thank you enough to teach this important lesson. I have always made the simplest version of a buttonhole but when I saw this video it was a real eureka moment. I am knitting a cardigan with a dubblebreasted border in garter stitch. Now I am making the reinforced buttonhole and it came out splendidly beautiful. This is an experience to note. It's the first time that I can be proud of a buttonhole. Thank you so much!
I just started a cardigan for my husband. This video came at the right time. Thank you!
Oh, this looks great. Once I've finished my current WIP, I'm starting a cardigan. I know I'll be referring back to this one.
The video is here to stay 🥰
Absolutely stellar tutorial! Thank you.
Oooh, thank you for this video. I knew the beginner technique, but the reinforced buttonhole is going to be my go-to one
Yeah, it's great and not much more difficult at all!
The first technique is what you use on the fingerless gloves. I used that same technique to make a balaclava for a toy & it worked well enough for me to be asked how I did it!!! Now I can link this vid for multiple holes (which aren't just for buttons) so they can see!!!
Awesome!
I wound up liking your Embroidered button hole the best. You did a great job of sewing it up.
thank you
Wonderful video as always! I've been doing a deep dive into buttonholes with the idea to design my own vintage (50's-ish) cardigan. I love the look of vintage knitting, but I do not love trying to read the patterns! I'm hoping I can combine "more modern" techniques with the vintage silhouette and come up with something beautiful but not terribly complicated to knit.
Big thank you for the lesson.
Good day,
Alicja from Poland
You are welcome!
So helpful. Thank you
My pleasure 🥰🧶
Nice have to remember that. Thank you
You are welcome 🙏
Another great video, Norman thank you. Yet again I find myself needing to learn a new technique and as always, I am able to find a high quality video tutorial from you :)
thank you, I learned a lot today!
Thank you for a comprehensive video on buttonholes. There are many other videos on making a buttonhole but they typically only cover one technique. The vertical buttonholes are particularly interesting.
Thanks so much. Glad my tutorial could make a difference!
Norman this is wonderful, thank you so much for your skill and knowledge. I am in love with the grafted button hole 😍
Yeah, it's a stunner! Tho...bot exactly for beginners 🙈🙈
My good sir: I am beyond delighted to have found your buttonholes video right when I need to create a few in my current project. You are a wizard! Thank you! 🧶
heh. glad to be of help!
Thank you Norman ❤️👍👍
Button holes terrify me . Thanks for this video Norman 👍👍😊
I hope no longer 😅
Thank you for this video Norman it’s been enlightening to see so many different ways to do button holes I know for me the reinforced one will be a game changer 👏🏻Amanda xx
Yeah, it's a lovely and easy technique for sure! The others are...well..a bit more fiddly 🤣
This just came up! I am about to work on my first.patte4n.with a button hole.and.hadn't even gone looking for it yet on my own!
Fantastic tutorial,thank you Norman
Glad you liked it, Isabel!
Great video!! Very helpful, and clearly explained.
Thank you 🥰🥰
Thank you for putting out such useful videos!
Great tips! There is always something new to learn from your tutorials. I appreciate the details in your explanations.
It's my pleasure!
Very helpful and useful tutorial. Thank you!
Glad to hear that!
Honestly I’m not making this up - how did you know I was about to start a project needing a buttonhole? It’s the truth and once again your clear demonstration and thorough presentation show the way. Thank you Norman.
haha...well. I guess, i also try to cover topics that matter..so the chances are actually probably not all that low to begin with.
@@NimbleNeedles yes, absolutely spot-on as always. ❤️
Amazing work, Norman ❤ that grafted double-knitting buttonhole 😮
Lady, you are a knitting guru!
I am no lady tho...
@@NimbleNeedles omg sorry this was for somebody else but you're a knitting guru nonetheless 😅
Very useful tutorial…thank you!! Who knew there are so many different ways to make a button hole 🕳️
There are actually yet more..maaaany more 🙈
Thank you so much. Normand, I 've learned so much in this tuto. This is great !
As always, you are very welcome, Nicole. Glad there were some bits and pieces for you in here :)
Thanks for getting me started. I will definitely look up some embroidery and crochet buttonhole techniques to see what I prefer. I especially enjoyed your anchoring stitches that kept your various methods tight. Your cabled buttonholes look so perfect.
Yah..it was a stroke of Genius i had while tinkering around and I think it's just sooo neat...if a bit unusual
😮Muchas gracias,es estupendo
Hi Norman. I must say this video is brilliant! I have always been skittish when it comes to buttonholes. Your tutorials on each of these are so clear and concise. I think I may actually swatch for fun! I love the way you embellished the last vertical buttonhole with that pretty pattern while securing it at the same time! Thanks for another wonderful video!❤️❤️
As always, it's my pleasure, thea :)
Thank you Norman.😊😊
You're a wizard! Thank you for sharing!
You are very welcome 😄❤️🧶
Thank you for another great tutorial!
You are very welcome 🥰🧶
I’m just here stalking buttonhole perfection after seeing an amazing 30 year old sweater on the subreddit which has given me the urge to raise my skills!! 😂😂
Awesome! 👍👍👍
Brilliant as always thank you xxx
As always, my pleasure 🥰
Brilliant!! Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Thanks a lot for these phantastic tips! 😀
Glad you like them!
Might you consider talking about different types of buttons (all kinds) and how they are applied to the knitted fabric?
hm..i don't see this coming. I feel it's not all that related to knitting and more of a general problem.
Fantastic button holes video 👌🙏👍🤩
Thank you. Happy to hear that ☺️😎
very good thank you!
Glad it helped!
Your videos are always great! but this one is especially excellent and very helpful. Thank you for super instructions. 10:47
Glad to be of help. These specialized videos sadly don't seem to do all that well here on yt tho 🤔😓
@@NimbleNeedlesthat is a very sad thing. Your demonstration videos are much better than diagrams in a book or a class in a knit shop which is not very accessible for very many people. I'll be telling my knitting friends about this video. Hopefully you'll get a few more views. 😊 1:00
Thanks! I’m an experienced knitter and rarely do buttonholes and when I do they aren’t nice.
Well, hope I was able to give you some pointers 😊
Thanks!
you are very welcome
Thank you so much!
dee ann! wow. thank you
@NimbleNeedles Absolutely 💯! I appreciate everything you share with and do for us.
❤danke,sehr ! ❤
Bitte sehr!
Thank you for this excellent video. I am faced with a pattern where the instructions are 'make buttonholes' so this was such a help. I even made a swatch to practice and, would you believe, I didn't get it perfect first time!
One piece of help I am looking for is how to position buttonholes where there is no button band. How far from the edge is too close, how far is too far? It would be great to include that in one of your hints and tips videos (assuming you haven't already and I just can't find it)
hm..i'll keep it in mind for a future video.
Horizontal buttonholes make more sense, since that is the direction of stress in the garment (around, not up and down).
Tons of different buttonholes tho. Like for a pocket of a cardigan as opposed to the button band, etc. I'd be careful to discount either idea
Most of these buttonnoles are on stockinette but cardigan button bands are generally k1p1 or garter stitch
I am not exactly sure how you think that matters. The techniques are the same no matter the knitting stitch pattern. You can also double knit and graft garter stitch. 🤷
It's just a bit clearer to see on stockinette stitch
A question for favorite knitting instructor, I have a mitt pattern written for dpn. The pattern is a tube , no thumb or finger openings. Would I be able to knit in the round avoiding the dpns ? The pattern calls for casting on around 30 stitches divided between needles and knit in the round for 10 to 11 inches. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you for taking time for me. ❤
i doubt that. there are the ChiaoGoo minis ..that miiiight work.
Great tutorial. One thing I did not understand about the double knitted buttonhole. Do you knit several rows in double knitting across the whole garment? Won't it be too bulky throughout the whole garment?
No, just the button tab. If you own a commercial cardigan or so, you might notice that they almost always knit the button band double
@@NimbleNeedles I get it. Thanx.
You mention needing a special technique for weaving in ends with cotton yarn. Do you have a video to reference for that? I’ve only knitted one top with cotton/linen yarn because things like that intimidate me.
there you go: czcams.com/video/aa59mMrgmCQ/video.html
(PS: you can use the search function on my channel anytime to get your answers faster)
So is the double knitted button hole mostly used for button bands?
here is the thing. I made this one up looking at commerical patterns. I have not seen a similar buttonhole in hand-knitting ever before. You could use it for whatever or not at all.
I see the last two horizontal options as a starting-point for your own experiments. I do believe, both options using a placeholder are the most viable ones and the ones that will last best in the longrun.
Very good do you have a shop
Shop? For what? Allmy links are in the description
I’m working in the round on DPNs to make something that will be stuffed and want to do a longer opening, would the technique at 41:10 work for that? Also, I’m making a “buttonhole” not for a button but for a little opening. And then I’m going to sew a button on one side of the opening and a little loop on the other side that will loop around the button. My concern is that when I pull the loop to the button, it will stretch out the stitches on that side. How should I problem solve this? I’m not sure if I’m able to explain this right, but any help is appreciated!
hm....i suppose...but i mean..typically that's not how you add stuffing. Never tried this but I would expect it to be quite visible in the end.
@@NimbleNeedlesI was going to stuff as I go, not through the hole, but I want to be able to put something inside it and be able to take it out. We shall see! 🙃
Thank you, a very interesting video. Now I have no excuse not to do buttonswholes
Glad it was helpful!
I for real thought it said perfect buttholes 😂😅 I think I need my coffee
🙈🙈🙈
Thanks!
No problem! thank you for supporting my work!
