Well I started when I was about 13. I really wanted to build my own website so I learnt it by myself. Then it was relatively easy to switch to different technologies.
University is important because you’ll learn the fundamentals, you’ll get all the options out there, and so on. If you’re young and don’t have a career, I would suggest finishing university for sure. But also working on yourself and your own projects while studying.
