    Hey Mark! the word 're-spon-si-bil-i-ty' has 6 syllables, so, as I was taught, it should have two stresses, one being the auxiliary stress and another the main stress, when the word is uttered in isolation, not in a sentence. The main stress is to be on the third syllable from the end and the auxiliary stress is to be in front but not touching the main, it should be in one step of it, that is: the second syllable has auxiliary stress and the forth has the main one. That way it sounds like this: re-sp(O)n-si-b[I]l-i-ti where square brackets mean the main stress. Sorry, I'm too bookish, I have no talent for teaching as you have! Thanks for a wonderful lesson! Take care!
    PS. By the way, that nife looked great as a pointer! :)))

    At 6:02, I disagree. "Fifteen" has definite stress on the second syllable. "Fifty" has definite stress on the first. This in fact is a key learning to help listeners distinguish such numbers (13 from 30, 14 from 40, etc.).
    Word stress and sentence stress could be separately explained.
    For word stress (placement of syllable stress within a word), it's so easy to answer the question so many asked on how to determine it (a dictionary).
    Sentence stress is much harder to provide guidance for. Take the question, "How much does this cost?" Why in the unmarked case should "much" and "this" have greater stress than "How and "cost"?

    • @sarac.3568
      @sarac.3568 Před 2 lety

      I don't understand how fifteen has definite stress on the second syllable. I think he explained it very well; you could say it by stressing the first, or the second, or both syllables. Depends on where you're from, what the context of the sentence is etc.
      What I still don't understand after all this search is what's the actual difference between stress and intonation.

  • @miraclealferez340

    English rythm is the most difficult thing for someone from a POrtuguese speaking country as me. believe me . to know which words we need to emphasize in a phrase quickly , automaticlly and naturally without thinking is almost impossible . but even so I know to speak well I must master this. I think the stress sylabble of the word responsibility is number 4. by the way I have a good suggestion of video for you Mark. many non native speakers have troubles in knowing if we need to use " it , this or that" at the end of the phrases, for example I love it, I love this or I love that. i have to master it, this or that etc. I always use them randomly, speacially it and this.

    What about if our native language has a different rhythm and pacing ?
    is there a guide that explains the rhythm of american english when questioning,when answering,when expressing some emotions ? I noticed this is very important.Because sometimes i watch a movie i already saw,and i wait for the character to say his line but when he says it i dont understand it at the first time because my brain was expecting to hear it in my native language rhythm.
