This was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for the Slang category--it offered one of the most difficult puzzles on the show, much like how Megaword had ones that had mostly uncommon letters and were very hard to pronounce.

Yeah….it WAS ridiculous- the Slang category did itself in after this lol

Nancy Jones was dismissed from Wheel because of puzzles like this. I think she's the one who thought Megaword would be a great idea of a category to put into the show.

The producers were needling WAY too much on the pronunciation here. Wow, that was excruciating to watch lol

Indeed, no wonder producer Nancy Jones was gone by 1995 and replaced by Harry Friedman, who is now executive producer.

Yeah the writers/producers really drew the line on this one. The slang category probably was retired after viewers were complaining about what kind of message this gave off…

It is in the rules: you have to pronounce the puzzle correctly or it won't be accepted.

@@TenPoundHammerWith slang there’s no official pronunciation. Buttinsky could be said exactly as it’s spelled or you could round the TT off to more of a D sound.

No. They all said it with the hard T sound like this at some point. They wanted the D sound, not T.

about the *ONLY* way this could have gone any (WORSE* is if they'd solved it in normal play had time for a speed-up and that category ended up being Mwgaword (for those of you who have never heard of that category, once you solved the puzzle, you got an additional $500 if you could come up with a sentence with the word that you just solved in the sentence. it was that category that got the previous Producer Emeritus, Nancy Jones fired and her job was given to now Producer Emeritus, Harry Friedman.

I looked up how to pronounce it. He pronounced it wrong apparently is my guess. It is prounced like "bud-insky" but he wet hard on the T's. Sort of stupid I know especially with the way it is spelled. But at the same time I can understand not accepting it if pronunciation matters which it seems to or at least seemed too.
