  • The Ali Thakurufaanu Ziyaarat was built around three centuries ago. It was formerly much smaller than it is now. At the time, when people traveled to Malé, they would stop by the ziyaarat to make a ritual greeting before continuing on their voyage. When Saeed Saeed was preparing to visit this island, people asked their chief to erect a flagpole to welcome him. The chief told them that there would be a flagpole that an appropriate piece of wood had washed ashore on the futtaru (rocky and rough coast) of the island of Kelaa. Following his instructions, they went to Kelaa and collected a number of logs that they took back to use as the flagpoles that can be seen today in the Ali Thakurufaanu Ziyaarat. A common practice at this site in the past was the making and fulfilling of vows to decorate the ziyaarat.
