do you know how insanely talented you have to be to sing a line like "I hate my face" to a crowd of strangers and not have them role their eyes? elliott smith was/ is in a class all by himself.

Jesse Livermore personally I think with an acoustic guitar it make you focus on the lyrics more and it’s more personal with loads of distortion behind not saying kurt songs weren’t personal

    You get what you see
I saw a rich fuck giving charity
    Saw an evil emperor
    Wearing my clothes
    They're far from the best
But they might suit you better than the rest
    Just looking in the mirror
Will make you a brave man
    I know my place
    Hate my face
    I know how I begin
    And how I'll end
    Strung out again
    Was a parliament of owls
Flying over a city of canals
Floating on the body (then I noticed the floating body)
Floating in the Dalles (floating face down)
    You get what you see
But some things they just change invisibly
I don't know where I'm going (I never knew where I was going)
And I don't even want to know (Thank god I can never know)
    I know my place
    Hate my face
    I know how I begin
    And how I'll end
    Strung out again
    Standing, smiling
    On some fantasy island
Looking at my lost reflection again (waiting for the moon, to pull again)
    But a tide's coming in
    And I'm strung out again
    Strung out again

this versions feels so much more emotional. it just feels like there;s more momentum to everything he's saying too. like in the album version it's him telling you things, then he tells you another thing, then another thing. but here, you get it and it goes from a mid-tier Elliott smith song
(which is still amazing anyways, since even the songs he did when he was 13, or the songs he can't even finish because he's too drugged up or drunk are great pieces of work which in my won little biased world, I know prefer to the entire discography of other musicians)
    to a fantastic one.

This song is so like. I don’t know. Onomatopoeia? It just sounds like it. The weakness and delivery of his vocals, the descending cord pattern with the augmented cord, this song is so so so goddamn terms of the tone how it relates to the concept, it’s just so like I can’t even describe it. So uncomfortable. It’s so ugly in way,
He ends on a major chord, which is essentially borrowed from the parallel major of the songs minor key. I expect no less from the guy who could casually play Rachmaninoff. His songwriting has inspired me in my own songs, I have one called sucker punch that uses
    Basically
    Cmaj7/G (add11)
    C E G B F
The G is the 5th, and in the bass,
    Aka second inversion,
And the clash between the F natural, is super gross for just a second,
    Then,
    Amin7/E (b13)
It’s gross. But tension and then release. Elliott Smith was a master of cord voicings, cord Melody, recording, lyrics, modulation. It can happen in a second by the way, changing keys literally in “1 2 (Dodododo)”
“Distant and cold, a sight to behold, everybody just sighs
No one gets on with you very long because you don’t feel bad when you lie-
    (And back to main key)
    Shooting star
That was my first elliott Smith Sound today fell in love with. I didn’t realize he was dead. I didn’t know that him for five years when I started listening to him. That song is like Jimi Hendrix plus Elliott Smith, and the ending is total chaos. The drums are off the handle, the lyrics are just cutting.
If you haven’t seen his video on the song writing lesson, definitely check it out because even other video quality is all messed up, the messages so good. “If you like it, it must be good right?“
This is the man he was. And he would ask people and need reassurance
And validation. I wish you were still here so we could shower you with love. This is a guy who would come at the bar and just write,
Then play the venues piano. Again he can easily play Rachmaninoff, even I’m not hip to Rachmaninoff some music and I’ve been playing music for 21 years and recording everything. He is the guy who taught me how to do you the second version Thicc Cmaj
He’s a master of the descending progression and a master of harmony and leading.
I studied jazz harmony and music theory and a music teacher,in addition to recording artist.
And this is the guy, changed everything for me and I will always be my favorite artist no matter what. Unbelievable talent.

      Apologies for siri fails.
      Chord*
      version=
      inversion
One more tidbit, he turned his guitar down a full step from standard tuning. So instead of
      EADGBE
      DGDFAD
Because supposedly he was playing his girlfriend at the times guitar and that’s just how it was tuned. So he gets these deep sounds and at the time probably had no idea. iTunes my acoustic the same way because it sounds great, differentiates you immediately, and if you are in standard tuning, you have no access to open cords in flat keys. So if you put capo
on first fret, play Cmaj7 “shape”,
      It’s C#maj7
      C# D# {E#} F# G# A# {B#}
      (F) (C}
      C#/Db = Enharmonic
and in jazz, which is all closed voicings on guitar, now it becomes viable to have that flexibility.
The guitar is essentially a sharp key instrument. Like emailed her, for sharps, FCGD(#’d)
It’s the a pitta me of the guitar. But if you put that capo on the first for it for that, it’s an instant F major.
In the case of my song, which technically is in the key of G# or Ab major, analyzed in lets try Ab, same key--
      Roman numeral / Major scale / Triads (1 3 5)
      Spelled in thirds-
Major sequence (capital indicates major, lower cause indicates minor)
      So if in C major (0 sharps/flats
C E G is the “I” or major one chord
Diatonic (aka within the major major scale)
      I ii iii IV V vi vii°
      1 2 3 4 5 6. 7!
do re mi fa sol ! la ti (do, hi)
      (Dominant V)
      Solfege!
      Major 1 minor 2 minor 3 maj 4 dominant 5,
      minor 6, dim vii°
      (Dim)
Angeles starts on a got damn “Emin9”
Just with the capo probably on the 7th fret...
Normally youd play that E minor shape
      Tab:
      0
      0
      0
      2 ring finger
      2 middle finger
      0
but to play the version he plays,
You have to change to the generally considered “beginning way” w index finger and middle finger both on fret 2
(there are other voicings but not same sound)
      Index led-
      2 ring
      3 pinky
      0
      2 middle
      2 index
      0
pretending the capo is not there,
      “ “
      E B E G D F#
      =Emin9
One of the richest chords you can play. Straight out of jazz
His voice leading was also next level. That’s why he has all those with all the sanding bassline parts because he understood how moves of notes could be efficient. So it’s always like inversions and shit. Not to mention Angeles, he’s simultaneously Travis picking and then strumming at the same time
Which is absolutely madness. But considering his ability to do intricate flamenco style picking in “tomorrow, tomorrow”
It’s not all that surprising that he could do this. He’s a fantastic guitar player. Fantastic like as good as they come dude. Just listen to whatever, folk song in C
It’s a nothing song to him probably. But it’s so well composed it might as well be in American classic song. That’s because he could play the chords as well as the melody and the movement of the melody, and sing, and harmonize etc.
And it appears on a tribute album recently released which has like I don’t know, 12 songs? And whatever is on that. That’s how good he was man. Truly a legend.
Piano lessons at a young age definitely will help. Since I am a music teacher for kids, sometimes around that age, it is true that since music is a language, it’s best learned early. Doesn’t matter though. If you don’t play guitar, try it. I dare you. And understand that your fingers will develop rough skin on the tips and hurt initially because they’re currently baby
Soft. Get through that. And learn Elliott Smith‘s
Songs and you will be Starting from a place eight years ahead of where I was. Use CZcams tutorials. Look up Travis picking, and notice how intricate it is. If you do one thing wrong totally train wrecks the perfection. But you can do it. Maybe not as good as Elliot because he’s a God. But watch him Travis pick in combination strum
He understood what modes were, even if he didn’t know the names Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian etc
      But 2:45 AM”
that’s definitely not a normal scale. It sounds the way it does because one note has been altered.
Which is why Eleanor Rigby sounds so good because it uses the Dorian mode.
      Because within major scale,
      CDEFGAB(C)
If you play those notes, noticing there are no flats or sharps and youre in the key of C,
If you start on the second scale degree,
      DEFGABC(D)
Just because you started from a different place and played the same notes of the key signature, guess what. I have successfully played the Dorian mode, which has a sharp sixth scale degree (#6, compared to natural minor, where 6th is “natural”)
      That one note changes everything.
He understood time signatures. The feel of a waltz in 3/4 time
Which is basically the same thing as 6/8
But there’s a different feel. Totally different groove
Listen to LA. The pick up. The measure before the song really starts on the one beat.
      The guitar riff starts on (+ = “And”, aka 1/8th, and “1 e + a” (“watermelon” , 16th note)
      (1 2. 3. 4)
      |1 e + a 2 e + a 3 {e + a 4 e “annnd”)
      |start
he talked about that song “it’s a rock song”
Indeed it is. I’m so happy that I get a chance to visit the repainted elliott wall in LA when I went for yoga training in 2014. Cherished picture taken from a friend. Man. To say he’s a legend I can’t even call him that. Just listen to I didn’t understand.
And he said he has no control over his vocals? Bullshit LOL. Some described him as singing like a spider. He was one of the influential
Artists who were known for their vocal doubling, which is the norm at least.
      98%
Minus people like… Celine Dion, which he happen to play the goddamn Oscars with in a white suit. And he felt out of place. He talked about how surreal that was. One song, one movie. Good Will hunting, Angeles. Listen to the high notes in the background droning throughout. “My poison arms around you...”
Honestly dude, his vernacular and real life and real as fuck lyrical style is so cool. He’s just a guy who loves songs.
So if you’re not a guitar player, just understand that anyone can play the guitar. Literally. And if you love Ellie Smith’s music, I can’t even imagine what kind of God you will be learning his voicings. Godspeed I hope this helps
      someone!!

Kurt Cobain was definitely good, but I still think Elliott Smith came up with more interesting chord progressions and used some interesting chord shapes at times. If I was to put anyone from the grunge scene to contrast Smith, I would pick Jerry Cantrell from AIC. He was always the best guitar player and one of the best songwriters from the grunge scene. I would also say Dean DeLeo of STP also is more similar to Smith's level of creativity in chord progressions.

Smith had ADHD, that could explain part of his drug addiction. people with ADHD react differently to certain drugs. its as if they go into "normal mode" while "normal" people who would use it would react in a different way. then of course he had issues apart from that
