  • A day after the Supreme Court upheld 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections in admissions and government jobs, there are key questions which are being asked on how this will impact millions of students in the country. Will this mean that General category students looking for admission in a university will find it even tougher to get a seat? We discuss on Left Right and Centre.

Reservation of all kind should be abolished.
May be we can give subsidy or fee waiver to poor students but it should be on merit.

    NDTV,
Why u did not bring a person from SC/ST community to know how they are being discrimated and persecuted in the soceity ? What kind of conditions they live in which prevents them from continuing their studies ?. Obviously the national media is filled with forward caste ppl...how will u support the cause of the oppressed ?. Same is the case with supreme court.

Sc st community living is not same across the country, discrimination is more in the villages, and less in metro city, so village people should get the benifit.

Uplifting minorities, should not include mediocre. Let all other students strive hard to reach required merit. Let the govt. provide them necessary fees, food, and shelter, if they meet the merit. Placements to mediocre by reducing qualifying marks is one of the key factors of the failure of key govt sectors like AIRINDIA, BSNL, AIR, DOORDARSHAN etc.

    WHY RESERVATION WAS CAST BASED
when the general category people had 100 acres of ancestral lands, by oppressing's SC and ST it going to be much easier for them to earn income, access higher educations
for example an ST (Adivasi) candidate family is dependent on forest collection/ his family environment will not be education supportive and financially weak plus no land or property given such conditions affects the overall scoring and merit scoring ability of a person.
If he cant then how will he move out of poverty and being deprived, hence reservation are very necessary.
where as a Open candidate who has 3 doctors in family has well supportive financial condition, and family environment where they support education as well as promote him for higher studies, is obviously going to excel in scoring high merits... even if he fails to do so They have Many acres of land owned for generations.............
while ST SC were deprived of it for 1000s of years, what will that candidate do?
If he fails to get merit comparable to OPEN category candidate? Do you wish that they keep suffering due to disclination faced in past? Which made them the poorest class in country?
Hence cast based reservation should not be changed even after 70+ years STILL they are most deprived members of society, due to failure of government upliftment schemes, Corruption in seat allotments, Duplicate of Cast Validity certificates by other OPEN category society YOU know what?
lets say 8 out of 100 seats are reserved for ST candidates
from which lets say 3 are reserved for Women Out of which
1 seat remains vacant due to unavailability of candidates.( Eligible )
2-3 imposters who have duplicate certificates belonging to Unreserved categories.
Hardly 4-5 genuine ST candidates actually belonging to it are able to get benefit.
OVERALL SEATS, IF THE CONDITION WOULD HAVE IMPROVED THE PARTICIPATION OF ST/SC WOULD HAVE INCREASED IN OVERALL MERIT LIST.
For ex, Total 1000 seats are available, according to reservation 7.5% seats for St which is 75 seats in total.
if they were occupying more than 150 seats i.e 2x the seats reserved , then it would been fine to say that St community people have improved themselves of period of 70 years ( Eligible candidates in both reserved + unreserved seats their participation exceeds )
But in reality even today Out of total 75 reserved seats, its difficult to find eligible candidates, hence lower ranked St/ Sc have to be selected .
Most tribal communities used live in/ depend upon forests, lakes, rivers.
hence preserving them from generations to generations. ( They basically worship mother nature)
which was source of lively hood .
carrying out activities shifting agriculture called 'jhum'. Thus high number to tribal didn't own a fixed area ( Land ) as property.
When after independence, Government declared this forests as state property.
Indirectly taking over their ancestral sources of lively hood, which they preserved for 1000s of years generations to generation.
Today almost 80% Major Industrial projects, Forest reserves, Various development projects, Mining.
Have been setup upon lands once preserved by TRIBAL COMMUNITY.
And they have not been compensated for that, instead those who opposed this were declared illegal occupants of state property
And a mere reservation of 7.5% was granted from which some states keep lesser that 3% effective reservation.
    marginalisation is highest in Sc/St.
    hope you understand my POV.

Ambedkar was persecuted bcoz he was poor or bcoz he belonged to oppressed caste ?. Previous president was not allowed inside temple sanctoram bcoz he belonged to oppressed caste.
Even today, ppl are persecuted not boz of financial background but bcoz of caste.
Ppl want to follow caste system in marriage but don't want reservation for the oppressed castes.

Wow, a student debating with other panelists. Actually, I think NDTV should give a chance to students as well in each debate, whatsoever the topic maybe and I'm sure people like Geeta Bhatt in this panel will be ashamed of themselves in front of a student and maybe then the political spokesperson will start thinking twice before saying any useless or irrelevant thing. I wish every debate has a student in it and that will really help us move in the right direction.

The deserved should be given priority.
Reservation based on caste/obc/tribe should be abolished. A stepwise approach of slowing terminating it maybe more feasible since a sudden stoppage will only cause outrage due to mindset of general public benefiting these reservations.
At this day and age economically backward should be supported by way of scholarship programs by the govt./NGOs etc not by categorizing them as EWS. Categorizing someone as EWS can also be degrading.
The brain drain that is happening in our country is due to reservation system. While politicians will only serve their self..its the public who needs a change in mindset to this problem only then can we progress.

  • @Thekyurawcity
    @Thekyurawcity Před rokem +4

Reservation should be abolished but there must be a programme or many, to ensure the poor is getting the atmosphere to study as equally as every other individuals. There must be cases where a minority or a person from a poor background have to work along with the study for a living. And in that case reservation was absolutely correct, but yes like others mentioned in the comments, merit over quota is recommended by me as well. But our governments must ensure to provide financial stability to each family in India. I think that's pretty much doable if our government starts serving us people instead of ruling.

    1. Reservation isn’t wrong for those who deserve it.
    2. What about the children of those who already have been given jobs or seats in educational institutes based on caste!! Should their children be also entitled to reservations???!!!!
    3. If yes isn’t it a massive injustice to the people of same castes who have been not given the seats let alone seats or jobs but don’t have access to education or healthcare!!!
I’m not saying it’s wrong but the idea and concept needs to be changed now!!
If certain sects of society are poor you shouldn’t be hypocritical of them just because their forefathers didn’t treat the today marginalised right!!
It’s is equally painful for general caste and many OBC caste students to lose seats by 1 or 2 marks whereas some students get seats at 100-150 margin

In India Opportunity and access to quality education as well as jobs with dignity for a better living condition is very limited.. Affirmative actions are just one of the very few successfully tested tool to distribute the opportunity among India's population..The socially casted powerful caste lines and mindsets will always try to prevent those perceived lower to their lines...The MERIT of the Nation is breaking these harder lines first..Better is to go for a Qualifying Basic +Weightage model for equal opportunity...

Even in debate, to bring in on a student in the debate for representation or views, you bring in a forward caste student. This is the true in every level of Indian power structure and representation. What a disappointment. The kid thinks that forward caste kids with privileges are the only ones discriminated when it comes to education and jobs. The country needs to do better in educating these kids on the poor conditions of the kids in majority of the country not just the cities.

For DMK, upkeep of quality in any field including education was an anathema and never was a concern. For them every thing shall boil down to dirty politics and always be viewed from the prism of 1.caste, 2.religious minorities such as muslim and Christians,3.language (Hindi, Tamil, Sanskriti) 4.regions viz; North India vs South India, 5.race like Dravidian or Ariyan. Their politics is always sectarian, dividing and poisonous. DMK party per se should be banished forever from the Indian political scene for the sake of India.
