  • This is part 1 in a series of videos where I show you how to harvest your own annual and perennial flower seeds. Begonia seeds (fibrous / wax or tuberous) can be tricky for many people to collect, which is why I show you how I do it with ease. This winter, I will show you how I plant these seeds indoors under grow lights and then in the spring I will show you how I harden them off outdoors before planting them. Collecting flower seeds and propagating plants is easy and fun!

      Hi there! Thank you so much for your comment and also for subbing. Begonias are one of my favorite plants. I'm excited that I was able to grow so many from seed this year (both fibrous as well as tuberous). 😊🌸

    Wow this is great information. I would have never thought to collect seeds from Wax Begonias. I love purchasing plants that I know I can do this once and never have to buy again. Would have never thought of doing this with impatient. Thanks so much for sharing your process.

      You are so very welcome! Gardening is great but can get so expensive fast. I love collecting seeds from flowers. It saves so much money and even if the plant that grows from those seeds is not 100% true to the mother plant, I still think it's fun & worth it. 🥰

    Great video! I was reading about how if you want to have more blooming, it's better to remove the female flowers. But if you remove the females, will you still have seed pods? Thanks!

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  Před 2 měsíci

      Deadheading the plant during the growing season is great because it encourages your plant to continue blooming. You want to stop deadheading it later in the season when you want it to go to seed so that you can collect seeds from it. 🌸😊

    Do you know if wax begonia seeds require any cold stratification? I've just collected a bunch, and want to make sure I keep them stored at the right temperature.

      How exciting that you collected a bunch of wax begonia seeds! The seeds do not need a cold stratification period. 😊

    I will be collecting begonia seeds. I never thought about them. I do collect seeds from coleus, impatiens and periwinkles among others.

      Yay! It's so fun collecting flower seeds, isn't it? One thing to keep in mind is when wax begonia seedlings emerge, they are tiny! However, give them time and they will take right off. Also, be sure to surface sow the tiny seeds as they need light to germinate. Happy gardening! ♥🌺😊

      @betsybugsmith5324 Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@budgetgardeningvita in addition to collecting them I also scatter the seeds in the general areas that I want them to come up in the spring. Most of the periwinkles and impatiens are volunteers. I just transplant to wherever I want them. Same with zinnias. Nothing is color coordinated at my house and I love it.

      @@betsybugsmith5324 What zone are you in? Unfortunately here in my zone 5b climate, many of those annuals would not easily self-sow for me.

      @@budgetgardeningvita I’m in zone 8a. Southwest Arkansas. We had some deep freezes in December last year. 6° was our lowest. I was really surprised when the seedlings popped up in the spring. They had fallen leaves on them and they were at the foundation of the house. I’m guessing they had just enough protection. I can’t imagine a zone 5. I’m good with short winters and no snow.

    • @budgetgardeningvita
      @budgetgardeningvita  Před 11 měsíci +1

      As long as the seeds are fully dry, storing seeds in paper or plastic is fine. I've used plastic for years and haven't had any issues. I err on the side of caution and let my seeds dry out for more days needed than less just to be safe. 😊
