Americans seem to worry more about fuel economy than Europeans, even though our fuel is much more expensive than the USA. For Europeans manoeuvrability is way more important - hence the engine being rear mounted, it's not just about space, it's also about giving the car lighter steering and a tighter turning circle. . Also, for all the "being down there and looking up a trucks" thing is typical hyperbole. European cars tend to sit higher than US ones of the same type, as we like to sit high to get better visibility in congested city traffic. As for why we love manuals, I have no idea. I hate them. Auto all the way. Originally I think it was about performance - our engines are small, high revving units and early autos were less efficient on these engines.

There's always going to be controversy with driving a smart car from the general public, who for the most part, sees it as a passing fad. I've driven one for ten years now and am aware of its shortcomings. I use it as a daily driver for general transportation and running errands in the city. Cheap maintenance and insurance along with ease of parking in sub sized spaces are big pluses. Competent driving skills and judicious defensive driving render most accident scenarios moot. If you don't practice those then by all means do not drive a small car.

I bought a smart car in 2009, after doing research on it. It had a five star safety Arty with Geico at the time, AND the frame of the car is a roll cage, just like a race car! You are surrounded by airbags, and the steering column does not come into your chest. So, to further these statements, I am living proof that you are safer in this car..... I was involved in a car accident in 2015 with my smart car. While taking a left turn, a car chose to pass the car behind me, and hit me in the driver side door going 55 to 60 mph! As a European who has lived in the US, I can tell you this - Smarts aren't very popular in Europe as well. They're only driven in largely-populated popular cities like Paris, Prague, Budapest, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Madrid etc., only because of their small size which allows easy parking in super-crowded cities.
And yeah, I've never seen one single Smart car in the US and I've lived in Washington DC for 4 years, in Boston for a year, NYC for a month and Philly for a month.

I’m a truck driver. Back up for 8 hrs. When there is a fatality in an accident they usually shut the road down and sometimes you passed a offramp so you have to sit until the State Police DOT and the corner gets thorough investigation done before they open up a line. So after 9 hrs we are moving. The only 2 people that Dead are the 2 in the smart car. Which was sandwiched between a pick up truck and a semi truck. But they don’t tell the public that it would be bad advertising for the little smart car. Most crash tests are done at 45 miles an hour. I bet you won’t find a crash test done on a smart car because they know without even doing one what’s going to happen to you all they have to do is look at a full-size car and seen the damage at 45 miles an hour and you can pretty much figure out what you and your smart car gonna look like. Well at least your family won’t have to pay for a casket. I just come across this video because I was thinking of getting one of these instead of a golf cart for campgrounds because these are legal to be on any public road. If you need to go pick something up from the store.

Every time I turn the corner for a parking spot, there always seems to be one there for me! The 2016 model has some power to it! It's so much fun to drive (easy-peasy U-turns) and like another viewer said..u don't feel cramped on the inside, even with a passenger on board. Great city car!!!

Scotty I love your videos, and to be fair I guess the Smart is more at home in Europe than in the USA, but they are great cars. That one in the video is the later model with a different engine, the earlier ones had a Mercedes built engine with a little turbo, 3 cylinders of fun. Those engines needed careful attention to service schedule and yes they have 6 spark plugs 3 of which are hard to get to.. but that's just part of the fun. They are quirky and different. By the way, the gearbox is not exactly automatic, it's computer controlled real gearbox with clutch, just no clutch pedal! 6 speed sequential, and all the economy of a manual, but slow changes are not for everyone.

I always thought the Smart car was crap... Until my wife recently bought a used 2008 ForTwo with low milage (um, cough, more like „kilometrage“?) for a laughable price... Now, there is only one huge problem she has with that car: She can‘t drive it... Cause it‘s constantly blocked by me!
What a fun car, especially for the city! It‘s a gas to zoom around those narrow european city streets in it, and it‘s absolutely well thought out. Yes, top speed is limited but the acceleration is actually not bad for a 1 litre 3 piston engine with 71hp, as the car weighs near to nothing. The only thing i dislike is the automated manual transmission. It sometimes feels like the gears are shifted by a narcoleptic turtle... Over time you learn to drive it a certain way and then it gets much better. All in all: What a fun and practical car this turned out to be... I love it!
I‘m always impressed how much stuff you can fit into this tiny car, when you pack it the right way! And, being a relatively tall guy, the interior never feels cramped, even with a passenger on board. I once drove a first generation Audi A3, and damn, that car made you feel really claustrophobic... The ForTwo on the other hand feels like a TARDIS, it seems to be bigger on the inside!
Objective safety is great for a car that size! Subjective safety on the other hand can vary greatly between people. My wife refuses to drive it on the autobahn, while I have absolutely no problem doing that. But I can absolutely understand her, as it can be kind of scary to be stuck on the right lane between two giant trucks, which happens relatively often as the top speed is only 145kph. When looking into the interior mirror, and the truck driver behind you tries to stick his nose up your bum, it feels like you are already sitting on his front bumper... Kind of hard to get used to that.

Always glad to learn it the right way!

    • @bn23dave
      @bn23dave Před 5 lety

a G Yeah, it‘s the Pulse trim, which comes with the pedal shifters on the wheel. But it doesn’t make any difference when using them, compared to using the stick... I prefer putting it into automatic mode and let it do it‘s own thing, as my own car is a regular manual and I‘m used to being in gear, the moment I shift and release the clutch. It drives me insane when I shift a gear in the Smart, hit the accelerator and... Nothing happens for what feels like half an eternity. I can deal with that much better when the car shifts by itself. I have found out, that as soon as the car begins to change gears, when taking the foot of the accelerator a little bit, and put it back down as soon as the clutch gets released, the transition is much smoother than when keeping your foot in position or pushing down on it. Don’t know, sounds strange but while I normally prefer manual over automatic, the Smart gearbox in manual mode is kind of unbearable for me... It totally messes with anything my brain has internalized from driving a car since I got my license 21 years ago, as all the cars I owned had manual transmission... My wife, who only ever drove automatic, has no trouble with manual mode in the Smart, by the way. She usually has fun using the pedal shifters, while not being able to shift a manual higher than 2nd gear before getting a nervous breakdown! It‘s totally bizarro world! 😂
I had the opportunity to drive the current Smart model 453 last week, where you have the choice between a regular manual and a double clutch automatic gearbox instead of the automated manual that plaqued the 450 and 451... The model I tried out had the double clutch automatic gearbox... And wow! THAT‘s the way to do it! You still can operate it manually with the pedal shifters, and yeah, operate it does! A whole different kind of beast! Now the pedal shifters are absolutely fun! The whole car got so much better with a proper gearbox, you wouldn’t believe you‘re driving a Smart! Best improvement they could have made! 👍

Got our 2008 model ,used, with 104k miles on it 7 years ago and now have 175k on it. It has been rear ended once by a Jeep and had minimal damage to plastic panels which were replaced. So yes it handles urban bumps and scrapes well. In that time other than usual wear and tare items we have only replaced the throttle-body and an engine mount. Performance wise it's what you would expect from a 3 cylinder 999cc car. No not really . If you drive it automatic it's a slug, however, use it in manual mode and wind that Mitsubishi engine up and it shows it's fun side and is a zippy little thing . They handle very well for what they and but are no old school mini! As for mileage to the gallon , depends how you drive. I would have thought that manual transmissions would be popular in the west, but they are hard to find in new vehicles here, even for pickup trucks. What I find most interesting is the difference between the new car buyer and the rest of us. Things like motorized hatchback lids that prohibit manual control seem over the top. When you look at how much it costs to maintain electric high tech vehicles when they fall off warranty, I wonder whether it will be viable for normal people to own a car.

It was slow, and the gearshift not good, but I got good gas mileage from it - usually 40 to 45 mile/(UK) gallon., and I used it mainly for long runs of 400 miles +. Never felt unsafe in it, and at the time I drove an 18-wheeler rated at 98000 lbs gross for a living. My colleagues used to laugh when I arrived for work, parking my Smart next to my big rig. The transmission in my M-B tractive unit worked in much the same way as the Smart and it too was mostly a PITA. Never had any problems with the car and only swapped it for a VW because I needed to carry more than one passenger regularly. and, oh yes, the engine was 599 cc and was turbocharged.

Sorry to contradict your opinion about the smart car, I have a 2014 smart, 46mpg and got it up to 102mph on a freeway (said the cop that stopped me).drove it thru hurricane Harvey flood water of 2ft and inside was still dry (considering the 6" clearance it did ok) also drove it for 1100 miles to New Mexico with 4 stops for fuel (21$ each full) came back home later that week thru 5" of snow, it did just fine, cross wind in the west Texas are bad but that didn't stop me from driving it at 70mph. What this car saves between gas and maintenance, pay for the car note (185$/mo) is a great car if you have one. I even took my wife camping using it and we had all we needed, plus it fit on the bike trail. After all it cost 17k , some spend that much on tires rims and a lift.

[fists bumb] yeh I’ve taken my 2011 to and from Austin twice now. 107k miles. No major engine repairs. Spark plugs. Coil packs. Cooling fan. Change oil if I’m bored or every 3-4 miles. Takes me to work. My first and best car to date. Used to cruise all over Houston with the old lady everywhere without a fear of parking. Cops never think you’re up to no good so they never really take you seriously unless you drive like you own a big Ford diesel.
Two years later (bought it used) I have the Lord, Karma and luck on my side.

One of the best cars I ever owned was pretty small. It was a 1970 Datsun 510 wagon. It was simple to maintain, easy to park, fun to drive and even though it only had a 1600 cc engine, with 4 on the floor it had enough power and was super reliable. I even drove it from San Diego up to Seattle and back.

I realize this is an older video, but only half of what he is saying is accurate. I own and race a 2009 Brabus Cabriolet SmartCar here in Hawaii. It is 2021 and I have owned it for about 2 years. Here is a COMPLETE rundown about my car.
There is a ton of support and parts from different groups on the Internet for these cars.
They were made for over 20 years.
NOTE: This car is SHORT but it is NOT small. It is as tall as any Honda Fit, it is as wide as any of the FIATS (now there is a piece of crap) or other small cars. It is only shorter, but front facing is the same size as 80% of the cars on the market and it has a HUGE front window to see out of, and big doors. Very easy to get in and out of. Try getting into a Lotus Elite.....
Horsepower - 105 bhp. Tubocharged. You do have to use hi-test gas.
Mercedes did not supply their own engines for the car for a short time, and mine has the factory Mitsubishi engine. It think it is a better engine than the Mercedes. Same size and specs.
The tank holds nearly 8 gallons, I get 40+ miles to the gallon even with the leadfoot I have. I had to fill it up last year, and might have to fill it again this year. Depending on how I drive (hah).
900 cc, three cylinder engine, is peppy and fast.
Insurance rates are the same for any other car.
It is speed limited to 85 mph, but with that bypassed it will hit 105 miles an hour easily.
I pass cars and trucks on the freeways here easily, have never had an issue.
It handles like a dream at any speed even in crosswinds. McPherson struts, electric assisted steering.
Mine has 17" wheels front and back. It does not fall into small potholes! It corners like it is on rails. Seriously.
I have raced sports cars for over 40 years, including Spitfires, MGA 1600's, Karmann Ghia's (well, with some mods), Bug Eye sprites, the incredible Saab Sonnets and more. I know a little about sports cars.
The SmartCar can handle just like any other sports car in it's class.
It weighs 1,800 lbs, and has a built in roll bar as part of the excellent frame that runs throughout the car.
It has giant doors to get in and out, I would say the car is actually bigger on the inside than on the outside!
** Excellent brakes. Plenty of acceleration to get going on an on-ramp, just stick your foot in it to get the turbo spun up (3,000 rpm) and drop your foot off the brake.
    Price of parts and Maintenance.
There is always some whiner that lets a dealership nail them to the mast, then complain about it. Honestly this is one of the easiest cars I can think of to maintain. My 13 year old neighbor girl changed the oil on mine the other day, so she could learn how. It costs no more than any other car for maintenance, or for parts. I have replaced several parts on mine with newer lighter versions (running boards, front and rear air dams) The running boards were $100 each. I bought replacement headlight nacelles for $150 for a brand new set, including the bulbs.
*** there are plenty of parts available, especially through E-bay. Nice thing is that like the Saturn Cars, the body panels are plastic on the outside. They are easy to fix or replace and there are no gigantic quarter panel parts to worry about. ** I had to put a new Air conditioning fan in it. Under the dashboard. The fan was $60 (2021 price) and it took 15 minutes to pull the old fan and motor out and snap in the new one.
...This car was made by engineers for the common shade tree mechanic.
The engine itself is set into rails, that can be detached at mid car, and the entire rear end, engine, trans and all will roll out like a wheel barrow. This is an amazingly practical design, and beats the hell out of pulling an engine out of my Subaru WRX.
There is an AMAZING amount of room in the back, over the engine. If you lay the passenger seat down, I put 6 foot long FENCE posts in there from the hardware store and drove them home.
.....note it does NOT have an automatic transmission. It is a manual transmission, BUT, it has dual clutches and is shifted just like an automatic. 99% of the people cannot tell the difference. A manual trans is much easier to maintain. The dual clutch is just like the ones on racing motorcycles. It comes with a stick AND it comes with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and you can switch back and forth while driving between manual shift mode and automatic. The manual shift is sneaky, if you rev it to 6 grand in first gear it will shift itself into second gear anyway! Even in manual mode when you come to a stoplight, it shifts itself into 1st gear, but still in manual mode.
Used prices are excellent. I would buy one again in a heartbeat.

I was in the automotive service business for a few decades and have owned and driven many cars with manual transmissions. Sorry Scotty, but I have to disagree with on one item: downshifting a transmission will not cause premature clutch or transmission or clutch wear unless you are jamming/forcing it into gear; the clutch hardly wears at all unless it's under load as in hard upshifting at high RPM....the clutch is not under almost no load on a downshift. I respect your years of experience as a mechanic, but I think there are a lot of mechanics who would disagree on this one point. Aside from that I think your videos are informative and helpful for the average consumer.

Most dependable car I ever bought. In 2015 I bought a 2013 smart car for $6, 200.00. Still had 1 year warranty. In 8 years I have never had a repair of anything. 1 break job ( $475.00), 2 sets of tires, set of plugs, and oil changes. I could today sell it for not less than $9,000.00. Also, with it’s race car like superstructure around the cabin, and multiple air bags, it is considered to be one of the safest cars on the road. 79,000 miles and going strong.

I owned one when they were first available in the United States. They were built pretty well, but very slow and too small for our roads. I now see smart cars at race tracks as a tow car since they are now cheaper than a golf cart and they have air conditioning.

  • @911naimplate
    @911naimplate Před 6 lety +3

I have owned 27 cars over the past 39 years from just about every major car manufacturer. I'm a car nut, what can I say. In 2009 I picked up a SMART Brabus. Honestly, it was one of the most fun cars that I have ever owned. When you get the shift pattern right (you do need to shift the auto-stick manually) the car is actually pretty zippy. I thought the build quality was exceptional and the only car I have owned over the years that had a steel cage on par is my 911 Carrera. The car was a blast on the back roads, easy to park and more of a conversation starter than any of my other cars, some of which were very limited edition models. While the car was short in overall length, it felt quite comfortable inside and I always felt safe. The quality of the build materials was very good and the Mitsubishi engine was very dependable. The car was also very easy to work on yourself with excellent access to the engine by a simple jacking up of the rear end. With all of that said, it did a poor job soaking up bumps in the road due to its stiff suspension and short wheel travel and I often found myself swerving out of the way to avoid potholes. The car did bog down on hot days with the A/C on unless you did shift the car manually. Other than that, I loved the car. The only reason I sold it was because of the poor roads we have on Long Island, NY, NYC, and New Jersey. I loved driving the car in Pennsylvania and If I lived there, I would never have sold it. IMHO, the car gets a very bad rap because as Scotty mentioned, most American’s like large cars but many of us have second and third cars and you do not always need seating for more than two people. Train stations are way over crowded with large SUV’s that are driven each day by only 1-2 people onboard. Parking spaces are in limited supply and I was always able to slot into small spaces, even motor cycle spots and the local police never bothered me especially because very few people ever road their motorcycles to work especially during the colder months. Ask almost anyone that owns a SMART car and they will probably tell you that they love it. The only people that bash the car are people that do not own one or people that are NOT strong enough to stand on their own two feet and take on the naysayers because it is easier to follow and agree with the crowd then it is to take them head on. If our roads were better, I would buy another one in a heartbeat. That’s my fair and honest review of the car. One last short funny story: Being a Porsche guy and a Smart car lover I saw the two go head to head one morning in rush hour traffic going into Manhattan by LaGuardia Airport. The SMART was a no frills base model and the Porsche was a late model 911 Turbo. While the 911 could easily destroy the SMART on a normal back road or wide open road, on this day it stood no chance. Traffic was moving around 30-40 MPH and New Yorkers love to ride bumper to bumper. The SMART literally darted and flew between the cars as if it were a CART car and the guy in the 911 was going crazy beeping at everyone that would not let him slip in to spaces that the SMART just blasted through. I will never forget that three minutes of bliss until we all lost sight of the SMART car and the guy in the 911 just sat with the rest of us pulling his hair out. Pretty funny indeed. Say what you want but almost every decent car serves a purpose. That’s all I’ve got………….

SMART is failure even in Europe. They put BILLIONS into R&D. I guess if you burn that amount of money you can't just give up on it.

Vytautas Peckas I never questioned the viability of the project. I guess that not even in the video was mentioned that. What I would like to highlight is the practicality of that car. I am a petrolhead, I love cars, I have a smart for two, the ride is crap, it is slow and the gear box is a joke. (It is not automatic as Scott said in the video), but it is so easy to drive around town that more than makes up for all the problems that it has...

The closest I came to a smart car was a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback, it drove great had a 3 cyl in it and got a solid 44mpgs on the highways and at least 35 to 37 around town. the downside was I never felt all that safe in it and it had alot of road noise on the highway!

don’t worry about what people drive? Everyone has different tastes, and in the end, it is THEIR money. They might not make total sense in the US, but neither do all the $50k+ lifted pickups that never even see a dirt road in their lifetime

Colleague didn't receive a raise one year for buying a Smart Car. Hard to prove but the bosses always laughed at the sight of it in the parking lot. Maybe his problems were much deeper than 'just' buying a stupid car.

Hello sir, thanks for your videos to give me some good perspectives on my thoughts about buying a smart car to fight with crazy gas prices, environmental friendly, easier to maneuver, park, etc. what would be a good all-electric car, 4 seats but very compact, with the roof is mildly round (I want to put some rack on the car roof in case travel needs some storage); I can afford mainly first time used car. Please advice some makes and brands.

Good for trips around the town (work, mall, movies, food, etc.)
With all that money you'll be saving, you can put that towards car rentals for when you plan on making long-distance trips.

I've lived in Scandinavia / Europe for just shy of two decades. I can tell you that Smart cars are fantastic for cities. However, everything you've said is true. Even on the "small" highways of Europe, you don't feel safe in these cars. I had one (a mid 2000's model) that I loved to drive around town. I tried the highway once, ONCE. I ended up selling it to buy a Rover 75 which was just as good gas mileage and heaps better for space and I could drive on the highway without feeling like I was a tin can between bowling balls.
