    (NIV) James 4:17:
“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” - This scripture basically sums up what withholding is. It’s sin. It’s contrary to the good God means for us to have and to be. Thank you, Dr. Doug for your labor of love toward God’s people and my 30 yr marriage that has been suffering for so long. There is hope now that I have been led to your teaching on this subject.

What would you say to the spouse that has spent almost 4 decades being neglected and then the withholder expects reciprocal attention when they realize that the spouse is fed up with all of the neglect and acting out and basically has nothing left to give nor the desire to try and there is fear of being put back into a emotional harmful situation. It is like Lucy and the football.

I gave up trying many years ago. No love and affection before marriage because religious beliefs. No love and affection after marriage either; too much complaining about everything going on. Terribly lonely.

What if a spouse is not willing to reciprocate even if you're doing all these things (moving toward a spouse) and they are not willing to do these exercises?

If they are unwilling to do so, then they won't change. They have to choose to stop withholding and get help in order for intimacy to be restored in a marriage.
If you need support, you can call Heart To Heart Counseling Center at 719-278-3708 and you can scheduled with a counselor/coach who specializes in intimacy anorexia.
