- The Harrier GR.1 is a very powerful, though somewhat difficult to use, plane that currently sits at 10.0BR in the British air tech tree. It utilizes SRAAM missiles to annihilate enemies at close range, but, beyond that, this plane suffers greatly. So, is it worth it? Should you buy the Harrier GR.1? I go over all of that and more in my full Harrier GR.1 review.

The GR.1s biggest problem is that people couldn't be bothered to learn how to avoid getting in the path of SRAAMs when the plane first came out, and so it has gotten to a BR which is slightly too high for it, since it is extremely hard to be productive or survivable in an overtier, due to lack of radar, flares, and everyone flying in planes that will outrun your missiles. It's still viable for those of us who have played it for a long time and know how to use it, but I wouldn't recommend it to newer players.
SRAAMS have also been significantly nerfed. They used to effectively have a 100% kill probability inside of their guaranteed range. Now, not so much.

Definitely wouldn't recommend the gr1. SRAAMS have been nerfed a lot and if an enemy sees you (which they almost certainly will when you have to be so close), they can always just 1 flare due almost everyone having flares at 10.0. I would rather take the gr3 at 10.0 than this thing any day due to its better engines, flares, and in my opinion, better missiles.
I still think the gr.1 is viable, using it today and the sraams not as good as they once were are still effective.
literally the premium mig 21 for golden eagles (dont know the name) is better, has radar as well as 4 way, way better missiles and more manurable

if gr1 in 10.0 if okay, then i think av8a in 10.3 will be fine too, av8a is better then gr1 obviously, 200 round flare and only half repair cost to gr1. gr1 should be 9.7 or av8a get lest 10.3

You need to Review this again since Nerf to SRAAM missiles and change to BR and addition of new planes (especially the SRAAM nerf hurted this a lot)
In my opinion Bad plane would recommend getting the Sea Vixen over the GR1
Great br at 8.7, gets Red tops, gets decent radar and is fast.
I prefer the GR.3 because I at least get counter measures, good engine power, missiles and at 9.7
The only Harrier I have is the AV8C for the U.S. tech tree. After spading it I do not look forward to the British Harrier. It is not bad, but takes more effort than it is worth sometimes.
P.S. repair costs are unbelievably bad on it.
I have the gr1 and the repair cost is not bad lmao yes its 10k but 9 out of 10 games i get 30-70k sl so no butttttt ofc thats me cant say much for you since i also got prem acc

the funniest thing even though it has no countermeasures if you go in cockpit view and look left it has a panel for both chaff and flares XD

I bought the gr1 a few days ago and it has a VERY steep learning curve. It also suffers being overtiered and easily countered. It has a few things going for it though
1. Maneuverability. Use the thrust vectoring and airbrake for goodness sake, you will outturn every fighter at your tier
2. The guns; what can I say, 30mm are good, and learning their ballistics can save your ass
3. The climb rate; only thing higher than you in the sky are MIGs
4. SRAAMs; ungodly maneuverability on these things, but you gotta be lucky and hope they don't pop flares
Overall, I would give it a 7/10 premium. Only worth it during the sales, and I would NOT recommend it to anyone new to jets in war thunder

Bro, I recommend getting the sea vixen. 8.7 with Red Tops as a boom and zoom fighter is amazing
Recently got it and going from viggen to it was a painful learning curve but once you learn how to fly it its easier.

Could you try to include other recommendations based on the nation that the premium is from? I would imagine most people are looking at this harrier as a way to grind the last little bit to top tier British and if it ain't the best idea then which British should they get?
i fealt the same way when i got it i was super bad but i would go super high above everyone and bomb bases most of the time not gaining any attention then i would have a massive flank on everyone else and get atleast 2 kills a match and 0.888 bombing and get a ton of sl and reserch
I absolutely love the AV-8A, it's my most played plane (by far) and definitely in my top 3 favorite planes to fly in War Thunder. However, moving higher in BR, with marginally worse flight performance while also losing the countermeasures seems like such a bad trade. Are the SRAAMs really that good to make it worth it?

Very good turn rate on the missile, and the roll rate in combo with it's small size can be used to dodge missiles. Without it's airspawn it is a little slow to the battlefield.

@@iceshadow207 well, the British tree has a lot of fast planes around this br, like the jaguar and lightning. I always seem to have them fly by at mach 1.1
Which would you recommend more, the AV-8A or the F5C? I wana grind out my American plane tree and they both have the same multiplier so I just wana get the one that will grind better and is more powerful. What would you suggest?
@@smellysardin3793 av 8 is good if you want accelerate and a lot of flares. F5 has more bombs, worse missiles, and better turn rate. It also has a br where you can face Mig 23 MLD. I would recommend Av 8, but it is personal preference.

The ballistic computers work in Sim. They work in the HUD while in first person view which is the only way to fly SIM.

This is why everyone should buy the av-8 instead: It has longer launch range, has counter measures. I would say that is better than bigger load.
Worse missiles tho, it just depends. Each of them have their strenghts and weaknesses. As for AV-8s missiles, they might have better range but they are worse for countering anti-missile manouvers.

honestly the SRAAMS aren't even good. A single flare shot can, and *will* throw them into the stratosphere, and the only good part about them is that they turn well, still basically useless at it's BR.
currently there isn't much things at it's BR that is slower than itself, and the lackluster maneuverability just adds fuel to the fire. speaking of fuel, at least it has a good full tank capacity.
How good are British jets? Like is this plane worth buying to grind them out?
They’re strong but the Harrier GR.1 in general is very meh, I exploited the shit out of it when it was 9.3/9.7

While British jets are interesting, I would say that you never go down the meteor path. These jets are not really worth getting since they stop at rank 6. also if you want a premium to grind with. Get the Sea Vixen.

Should I get the mig17as or the mig12s (r-13-300)
The MiG-21S is a bit more fun, but they're both about as good as each other at their own BRs. The 17 is better for turning, and you won't face as high of BR planes, whereas the MiG-21 will outrun most planes that it faces, though it has mediocre missiles for its BR.

this goofy little plane definetly isn't the best out there, but ever since they dropped it back to 9.7, the sraams became a whole lot better, mostly because a good deal of aircraft dont have flares, also the fact that the gr1 doesnt have flares isnt the end of the world either, i throw out a buncha rockets and it fools 9Ls. the guns are nice too, but maybe because i'm a ussr main used to 2 seconds of trigger time. Not for everyone, but its definitely one of my favorites
Its "amazing" missiles are only useful against people unaware of you and people who dont have flares. like all missiles.

I recommend getting the Sea Vixen. It get really good missles for 8.7 and it has very good thrust wich helps with boom and zoom fighting

No flares, no radar, no radar warning (like they did have in real life), su25... The stream can only kill something close to 1km and they got heavily nerfed (you can hit a plane and he can still fly)... Don't buy it.
I wish the Sea Harrier would be added at a reasonable br of 10.7-11.0 as a premium will the AIM-9L, and yes I know that it will be harrier spam like the first time but I think it would be a good top grinder for Britain.
Why as a premium? Why not just as a tech tree vehicle, theres already a premium harrier (It's the GR.1, you should look for a video about it sometime) if for whatever reason you didn't know.
I disagree with the premium part. It should be a tech tree vehicle and be set after the Harrier GR.3.

There’s plenty more of them too add, so it’s not off the table for Gaijin to bring back Harrier spam in full swing…

Just compare the gr1 to other 10.0 premiums and youll see that itss the worst of all of them: lower engine power, lower speed, worse maneuverability, no flares, cant go supersonic and the sraams are basicly useless if you have an enemy with flares and a brain

Amazing missiles!? 😂😂😂 The SRAAMs are a joke. I don't recommend this jet. Because of the BR it is at, no flares or radar and the missiles are a joke.
