  • United Airlines was forced to cancel a Venice, Italy-bound flight after the plane suffered a massive fuel leak while waiting to take off at Newark Liberty International Airport. Video captured by a passenger on board the Boeing 767-300 shows fuel gushing from its left wing.

    The plane is leaking fuel from a port used to dump fuel. Most likely a faulty value or the crew mistakenly flipped the dump switch. A plane will dump fuel in the event of an emergency landing. This once happened to me when the flight I was on had to land within minutes of taking off. With the full fuel tanks, the plane was over it's weight limit for landing and the pilot had to dump a lot of fuel in order to land within the weight limit for the wings.

      Crew would have to hit the dump valve switch in cockpit , The fueler probly over fueled one wing they both dump from left wing because the fuel panel is on the right wing. Good Shot !

      1-Sometimes incorrect ramp markings lead to fueling dispenser being too close to other ground operations, I would have to delay the fueling operations for safety.
      But what are the minimum distance allowed between the fueling dispenser and the baggage handling equipment/Catering equipment in case we must operate them simultaneously? As far as I know there has to be a clear path of exit and this will always be assured. But as a regulation there has to be a minimum distance allowed, right?

      It could be easily contained with many bags of speedy dry. Most likely the high level float switch failed. I would troubleshoot the fuel load and that switch ń the left wing and maybe the dump switch and valve. I would first defuel to the level it stops going oveboard. Of course the passengers need to deplane first.

    If a planes tanks are over filled the valves will open & where the fuel is coming from on the wing is where jets usually dump fuel in case of emergencies. The valve is probably malfunctioning or was turned on by accident.

    I'm an aircraft structures/sheetmetal guy who's worked on many big jets. It's possible a fuel leak like this could've been disastrous, but highly unlikely. This leak is the approximate location of many jet's fuel dump valves. You can watch B-767s on CZcams dumping fuel in flight in this location. I'll betcha this was an open dump valve, though I've never worked on one since that's the systems guys area.

  • @alancaro526
    @alancaro526 Před 7 lety

    That fuel leak would probably have not caused the airplane to crash, there are many saftey features provided to the pilots, for example there are many different fuel tanks in the airplane, if you lose one you may have 8 more, and you may also cut fuel coming threw the tank that is loosing fuel, pilots may also notice the amount of fuel they are losing with their instruments and make necessary adjustments.

    If it was dumping and the system pressurized then you would see much more fuel. One scenario is the dump valve was energized while pressurized momentarily and then the aircraft was shut down leavïng the valve open. It could also be that the the wing tank was overpressurized and it was venting overboard. The aircraft could have been fueled during a cool night and the fuel expanded during the heat of the day. And it's possible that a small screw lodged in the valve keeping it open from a previous dump cycle. Most likely though a high leveĺ float switch for the left wing failed to shutoff the fueĺ shutoff valve and so the left wing continued to accept fuel even though it was full and so it went out the vent to overboard.

      No that was due to different cause completely, this one was most likely over fueled and even if it ran away quickly he would just emergency land to the same airport he aborted from.
      It does happen easily specially if the fueler is fatigued, he probably over fueled the right win and it dumped with the left wing, the only damaged here is the cost of the cleaning

One it is being pumped overboard with a pump, which is how these emergency dump valves normally operate, or the wing was overfilled and then when the fuel inside heated up it expanded. Just like how water can come out the top of a water balloon with a hole in it, the fuel can come out of a closed wing when expanded.
