If the United States and India were to ever make it Facebook official, their status would be: "It's Complicated." These two global behemoths may seem like close allies, especially judging by the warm welcome President Biden gave Prime Minister Modi during his White House visit in June, but in reality, they are anything but best friends.
During the Cold War era, India maintained a "strategically non-aligned" global status and it has tried to stay on the geopolitical fence since fall of the Soviet Union. But when Russia invaded Ukraine and Delhi refused to explicitly condemn Moscow, India's self-proclaimed "multilateral" approach was severely tested.
On the show this week, a deep dive into the nation that recently surpassed China to become the most populous country on earth. Ian is joined by award-winning broadcast journalist and Washington Post contributor Barkha Dutt to talk US-India relations, the state of democracy within India, and how the trauma of COVID has reshaped the country.

Sure, but a country should still have a moral compass, a set of (humanist) values, for its own good. Otherwise the risk of going adrift will be big.
Besides, India can easily condemn the invasion, support tech sanctions, or at least not copy Kremlin narratives, yet still buy RuSSian oil. Not like they would be denied, Moskou needs the money.

@@mandarinandthetenrings2201 how is that a downside? Being competitive is never a bad thing. It's only ever brought progress to a nation. Take USSR and American cold war for example. Both nation reached the peak of their capabilities during this time. It's not rivalry in our case even. It's just healthy competition. We don't look at the whole world as rivals. The only difference between our world view and other countries world view, is that they always have to decide which axis they wanna be a part of, the western bloc or the Chinese bloc. They look at a nation as a Chinese ally or an American ally. While we look at a nation only as OUR ally or OUR rival. It's all relative to us. We don't join an axis. India is the voice of the global south. We are our own axis. Why is America and Americans afraid of a democratic nation like india potentially being succesfull on their level? It's understandable in china's case cuz they're an authoritarian government and have multiple henious plans to disrupt peace. India never had that. India has never attacked a country first or started a war. If anything, Americans should be happy and promote india as much as they can, refine india as a nation, so that the world largest democracy, the truly deserving of being number 1, can get their. India is a humble society which cares about humanity whereas western democracies only guided by their economic theories of greed, wars, selfishness, guns, violence, drugs, etc. Also there's less of family values in any of the western civilization as they only live for themselves. 1. first Muslims are always victim even if you give them all the rights...they love this image to create chaos and use it to protect them and hide behind true victims.
no other community have problem only this community have ....even after they have their own muslim law board in a democratic country.. who denial countries law .
    2. In India , Muslims are majority and equal // look india give too big parts to Muslims radical Bangladesh and Pakistan ...and some stay who are loyal for their identity expect some are still radical...it was in the religion it self.

African perspective: from Ghana one of the better off African nations. Worlds 3rd or 4th producer of gold. Yet when you look at the numbers they are effectively paying Britain to take the gold. There is not a net cash flow to the Ghana coffers from gold. And when you do the research you will find that this was baked in to the deal when they gained independence from Britain in the 50s.
They became an oil producer in the 2000s. The numbers suggest the amount that goes to the Ghana state is 0.5% of all revenues. You heard that right. 99.5% of the oil revenue goes to Britain and America.
Now you tell me. If the same people came to you and told you to go fight Russia in Ukraine, would you do it? Ghana is hardly mentioned in the international media because there is no crazy stuff going on there. But Ghana is very influential among the African nations for historic reasons. So now it makes sense none of them are interested in Ukraine. If you want to fight Russia go do it yourself. India China Africa and I believe South America, simply do care. They have heard it all before and they are not impressed.

@@jameslawrence5828"accomodated" is where it stops. If you read India's constitution, nearly every law is framed to keep in mind Hindu sentiments, including references to Lord Rama. Although the constitution guarantees freedom of religion, it doesn't say that India is secular
You may argue that the preamble of India has the words "socialist" and "secular" in them but these were added by former prime minister Indira Gandhi who was a Soviet puppet and wanted absolute control over India by declaring an "emergency"
You can verify everything I said on your own
India is NOT secular in the way the west sees it. It is a Hindu majority country with a constitution that leads towards Hinduism, even many of India's missiles and rockets are given Sanskrit names. Sanskrit is the liturgical language of Hinduism
At the very least, minorities are tolerated.
Do NOT be mistaken that muslims are "oppressed" in India. They are the primary target for appeasement by political parties during elections, they have a STRONG lobbying group. If you stay I'm India then you'll get more clarity

    • @valetudan234
      @valetudan234 Před 10 měsíci

      @@jameslawrence5828
The Hindu rashtra concept isn't endorsed by the top faces of the BJP as much as the lower party members. Narendra Modi as a whole is aware that India can't be a Hindu state even if he wanted to, it's too big, too diverse for that to ever happen. Modi doesn't hate muslims like many other "human rights activists" argue. He's pro-hindu, not anti-muslim. When the new parliament was being inaugurated, prayers were performed by people of all religions. The Qur'an was also recited to keep in mind the auspicious day. Modi also notably paused a speech of his to allow the Muslims to preach the azaan.
tbh we don't persecute minorities like the west says. If the CAA was something that gave them the idea then let me clarify this
It is supposed to be specifically to accomodate minority communities living in the bordering Muslim countries to get citizenship of India much more easily. The reason why it doesn't include muslims is because it is targeted at Muslim countries. India considers Ahmedis as Muslim and hence they haven't been included in the CAA
The NRC is just to crack down on those people who have migrated to India without following legal procedure. Any muslim who has owns property in India and has an ancestral history of living in India will not see their citizenship being stripped off. Besides, most of these immigrants only carry aadhar cards which isn't a proof of citizenship so the government would be very careful in this.
We Indians do not want migration of muslims from our neighbouring countries. Despite having such a large muslim population, the percentage of Indian muslims engaging in radical activities remains very low and almost completely exclusive to the single state of Kerala in southern India. The core muslim population in northern India live close to Pakistan and Bangladesh who are undergoing radicalisation. If it spills over to India then it'll be a big problem
I'd propose the government to not allow migration of Christians either since they tend to convert the local population, hurting India's Hindu legacy.
We are free to accomodate people, however minorities in particular take the majority for granted which is not acceptable, the BJP as a whole only has a plant to shut those people up who can't accept that India has a Hindu majority and as a whole remains a Hindu society. Hinduism survives on tolerance of other cultures and we don't want these people who call us devil worshippers or infidels to live here in India.
The BJP's message is clear, if you want to live in India, you need to live like an Indian. India is a Hindu society and you have to respect it, individual states with a non-hindu majority are free to formulate their own local laws that suit their culture. The central government would always be majority leaning
People shouldn't confuse it with majoritarianism, because if that were to be the case, then muslims and Christians would've been declared as aliens by the Indian government, which is not the case. Minorities even get minority scholarships in many states that actually have a Hindu majority too
This is how India is, we are careful to not fall into a civil war like Sri Lanka but at the same time, we want minorities to respect India's history and Heritage in the same way as a Hindu does and not take the tolerant nature of Hindus for granted
Personally I don't hate muslims or Christians, I am friends with muslims and Christians myself, however, i wouldn't like it if they cross a line

business with all. When this is exposed openly, like in the Ukraine war, will India fail? Not in all cases. Foreign Investments look for only one thing. "What is in there for ME?" India is giving them several options. They look for infrastructure, an educated working force, and profit making environment. Modi ji is providing them. Did everybody forget India was a part of the "Third World" during the Cold War between Washington and Moskow? They have kept their stance the same, in principle, since then.
And they have several reasons to do so. New Delhi is smiling at Washington because Beijing is "bullying" India, not "threatening." Of course, Indian leaders may say to "the West" that they feel threatened by Chinese actions around the lines of actual control and Kashmir. First, however, it needs to be clarified that Chinese action is a threat to India in general. Second, even if Indian security is being threatened by Chinese action, the degree and the mechanism they perceive it could be totally different to the way the US imagined. Lastly, India also has its own domestic politics, which could hinder the Indian Prime Minister from making Indian foreign policy aligned with the US. Considering these factors, I think India will not sign any form of alliance treaty with the US, at least within three decades.

No. Alliance treaty we are talking about here is something different. It is a certain form of obligation imposed on participants. For example, the alliance treaty the US has with South Korea imposed treaty obligation that, if either side of the treaty is attacked by someone else in the Asian-Pacific region, the legislative branch of the other side MUST decide whether the state of war between them and the aggressor exists. What you mentioned that the Indian Prime Minister signed is not alliance treaty but a form of "comprehensive" partnership. The term "comprehensive" is, in fact, a kind of diplomatic rhetoric, which means that the partnership statement is not fixed but changeable. And the partnership is about broadly technologies and investments, not security and military, as far as I understand the statement issued by the White House.

India does not need to be on anyone's side, except to pursue its traditional role of supporting what is right and just. That role, by definition, leaves the west, with its warmongering, interfering attitude, with its long history of violence against our fellow humans, out. The west needs India much more than India needs the west. Until India acts against institutions like Harvard, which are not just educational, but political, and until Indians quit having feelings of inferiority complex, the chances of her attaining super power status, along the lines of China (which does not compromise her thinking as Chinese) will only be a pipe-dream! Read the works of the now famous Rajiv Malhotra for further explanatory detail, and don't be fooled by the likes of Bremmer!

Can think of the other way, are we India's ally? We better be arm in arm if both nations are interested in democracy! We can learn something from a 75% democratic approval rating of Modi. Interesting that both countries have a their own culture wars happening especially when both are at their strongest economically.

    India is no one's ally.
You must remember India is the Only Ancient Civilization still standing with much of its original ethos, religious practices still in place. So asking India to be an ally of some nation born a few hundred years is an affront to Indians.

    India is on Indian side.
To be an allay of American, means you need to invade another country --( india never ever invaded another country in their history.)
But that doesn't mean -- Indians left their friends alone during tough times.
