The series are based on the books, not the videogames though. And that version of Radovid you speak of does not exist outside of the games.
Prince Radovid is a 13-year-old boy when the books end, and all we know about his future is that he will become King, and known as "The Stern" one day (it's mentioned in passing, as a form of epilogue, but we never get to see it happen).
We don't know what that means, or what his reign will look like.
"The Witcher 3" expanded on the book material in a way that the author does not recognize as being related to the story that was told in his books.
And the books themselves end before the 3rd videogame begins.
So, there was no reason for the TV show version of Radovid to be like the Radovid in the videogames.
Both (the TV show and the videogames) created a new version of the character that's different from the books to suit their respective storytelling needs.
And both took creative licenses with the few lines that were offered by the author regarding the Prince's future as a King, that's all.

@@kayser1722 This is the only information we are given about King Radovid in the books:
"No one could predict or guess then that this boy of thirteen years, which at that time was a person without any relevance in a country ruled by the Regency Council and by Dijkstra, would become king. A king who, after he paid all the insults that had been given to his mother and him, would go down in history with the name Radovid the Stern."
That's all we know about him, the books end, and he's never seen or heard from again in the source material after those few lines.
We have no idea what his reign actually will look like.
The game took it as meaning that he becomes a paranoid madman that hates non humans, but that's their own personal interpretation and expansion on that description.
You could interpret it as "he took power back from the Regency Council when he came of age, stripped a few noble families - that didn't support him and his mother when they should have - of their lands and their names, and was a good, but sad, strict and unhappy leader".

Ehm sorry but no. I've played the games and read the books and Radovid is not fantasy Hitler (if anything, Nilfgaard could be compared to Nazi Germany but that analogy doesn't really work either). Radovid is a *very* minor character in the books, we barely know anything about him. However, it is said that he grows up to be a (strict, judging from his name) king. In TW3, CDPR interpreted his personal hatred for sorceresses to imagine his future and wrote him as a brutal paranoid mf who, like Nilfgaard, persecutes mages in order to preserve his own power.
So if anything, it's weird that Netflix depicts him as a young man, not a child. But what you remember about Radovid from the games has nothing to do with Radovid from the books.

    • @TheLostGirl21
      @TheLostGirl21 Před 10 měsíci +3

"Dark Radovid" is a pure videogame creation. He's not a book character.
Radovid, in the source material, is 13-year-old and still a Prince by the conclusion of the series, and there's like 2 sentences explaining that, in the future, he grows up to become a King known as "Radovid the Stern" (but we don't know any specifics regarding why exactly he was nicknamed that way).
Every mention of him in "Lady of the Lake" would fit in like, a grand total of 2 pages.
I don't think he ever meets Geralt, Yennefer, or even Ciri.
Everything about Radovid in "The Witcher 3" is a videogame creation, because they chose to continue the story beyond The Witcher's actual ending, and needed to create new material to continue the story including a new villain.
And Prince Radovid is such a blank slate that they used him as a template to create a villain.
On the show, he seems to be meant to replace the book version of Queen Hedwig, because she would have been a very hard character to write and to portray otherwise.
You can dedicate a line or two of dialogue mentioning that the Regency Council is taking over, because the Queen is to distraught by the death of her husband to make any decisions and basically do anything.
You can write "Queen Hedwig is still indisposed" without needing to show it or have her interact with other characters.
But, how do you show it on a TV show? Have her just... walking past Philippa and Dijkstra while looking depressed all the time at court?
      Staying locked up her room?
While a 12-year-old powerless Prince Radovid keeps moping and running around?
The TV show Prince Radovid was never interested in being involved in politics, wanted to escape his world of lies and deceits, and was totally caught off guard by the death of his brother and suddenly being crowned King.
Plus, if the people that confessed to having committed regicide to me then put a freaking crown on my head without being slightly worried I could have them arrested and/or executed the second I was made King, I'd be utterly terrified!!!
If I give the execution order, would a guard just turn around and chop my head instead?
If I were him, I'd just play nice and do as they say until I can get some outside help and/or find a way to properly figure out just how much control they really have over everyone involved at court.
So, you can have Philippa and Dijkstra essentially taking over the power while holding the King "covertly hostage" at court, instead of having a depressed Queen moping around.
It's more complex and intriguing to watch, and offers more potential (ex: for Radovid eventually attempting to take his Kingdom back from them, perhaps with a certain Sandpiper's help).
But yeah, Dark Radovid only exists in the videogames and the show's creators have been very adamant they weren't adapting the videogames, so I doubt this is where they are going with him.
I could be wrong! But they made him way too empathetic, and disinterested about power to suddenly become a cruel, entitled tyrant.
He was found weeping huddled in a dark corner after discovering his guards had been slaughtered (after he'd ditched them to keep Jaskier and Ciri safe from them), for frak's sake!
Trauma can only make one so dark if their adult personality has already been formed.
Stockholm Syndrome could cause him to adopt Philippa and Dijkstra's views and be manipulated into doing things he wouldn't normally be willing to do, but otherwise, there's nothing inherently dark about him.

I’m glad Jaskier was shown to be bi. He was very clearly coded that way and have been hoping it would be confirmed for a while now. But does anyone else feel their relationship here was just off? These seem like some of the few scenes Jaskier doesn’t have chemistry with the other characters, romantic or otherwise.

    • @TheLostGirl21
      @TheLostGirl21 Před 10 měsíci

Joey Batey described Jaskier as sapioromantic, panromantic and pansexual in interviews...
So, technically, he's on the aromantic spectrum, i.e. only able to experienced romantic attraction based on intellectual attraction (instead of gender).
And Jaskier preferred intellect seems to be people with high levels of emotional/relational intelligence and empathy (like himself...).
I'm not sure if you meant that Jaskier's chemistry with Radovid was off, or if Jaskier's chemistry with other people (ex: Vespula, Geralt...) he may or may not be physically (aesthetically, sensually and/or sexually) attracted to doesn't usually read as romantic.
Because technically, Vespula explicitly told Jaskier she'd never *ever* seen him have a "crush".
In the aromantic community, "crushes" are used to describe romantic attraction.
Whereas platonic attraction is called a "squish" (and yeah, Jaskier squishes really hard on Geralt, and has this whole queerplatonic thing going on with him).
So the way Jaskier typically "falls in love" with people should normally portray platonic / alterous attractions (often combined with sexual attraction in his case).
As for Radovid, he was very specifically swooning over how intelligent and insightful he is (as this is what specifically triggers his romantic desire in him)...
And its really adorable watching him trying to figure out the difference between his feelings for Radovid and Geralt, by comparing them to a spoon and a hammer, and putting a lot of emphasis on how Radovid is "different".
Not better or more important... Just different.
      Different tools for different purposes.
Different partnerships for different emotional needs.
So there's a certain element of confusion and skittishness when it comes to Jaskier's romantic interest in Radovid, and the whole chemistry he has with him.
He's intrigued, but also looks like he's scared, because of the unfamiliarity of it all...
The desire for companionship, and establishing a very close and emotionally / physically intimate relationship with your closest friends, he understands.
The desire to be part of a found family system, too.
But being romantically attracted to someone? And potentially wanting to form a romantic partnership (have what Geralt and Yennefer have)?
It's not that he's not not into it... It's just very new, and human beings are naturally programmed to be wary of anything they haven't been familiarized with when they were younger.
So there's a strong element of discomfort that I sensed from Jaskier, at times, where he seems to be trying to repress his feelings, and scared to give into them and trust them.
Whereas Radovid is a lot more comfortable expressing his own romantic desires.
And very perceptive / romantically adaptable.
He's figured out Jaskier's love language (he expresses his feelings more easily through his songs), and chose to speak it back to him.
He's also extremely good at listening and respecting Jaskier's emotional boundaries and showing support and respect for the other important relationships in Jaskier's life.
He's heard his songs, he knows how much Geralt means to him, he calls Geralt JASKIER'S white haired Witcher.
And he tells Jaskier that Geralt is lucky to have him in a way that sounds sincere rather than jealous or envious.
He offers to help him on his quest to find and reunite with his family.
When he senses Jaskier hesitate and pull away (when he asked if he could borrow his lute), he stops and allows him to maintain a comfortable distance.
So yeah, it's a delightfully complex queer romance that's filled with plenty of nuances and reads a bit differently than most classic ones.
As a panromantic that is able to experience both very strong aromantic (platonic and alterous) attraction and romantic attraction towards people, and have had plenty of crushes, squishes and meshes in my life...
Well, let's say that Joey's acting has been particularly impressive and accurate when it comes to portraying platonic/alterous attraction vs romantic attraction.
So, maybe that's what you were reading and why the chemistry felt "off" at times?

To be fair the author never cared about the videogames much, and doesn't feel like they are connected to his work, nor expanding on the stories he wrote.
They are other people's stories and writing that use the universe he built and the characters he created and made them their own, that's all.
So, I doubt he feels any more emotionally connected to the TV series than he does the games, nor would he be likely to remotely get upset about it.
I think the interview explained he was happy if these other medium made people interested in reading his books. But, otherwise, he doesn't feel like he's the co-author of those derivative works.

I was so upset that there were no queer characters in the show, I had doubt on Jaskier from the beginning though finally they made it canon lol
Thank you Netflix for giving this awesome show

really sad people will nowadays call any show good just because it has queer characters

@@havidikevidiNot just queer characters! But extremely well-written, complex, highly realistic ones that are easy to relate to and identify with!
Bold of you to assume we didn't absolutely love the show already (for the stories, the fight sequences, the music, the fantastic actor performances, the themes, etc.), back when Jaskier hadn't been confirmed as pansexual (and greyromantic), though.

I'll be honest, season 2 was pretty meh, but this season? GOD this season was PURE - GOLD. Netflix pls keep giving us more Jaskier, he has been the spirit of the series since the first season❤‍🩹
