Paul Dano on Going From the Riddler to Spielberg’s Dad: ‘It Was a Really Good Antidote’ | TIFF 2022

In the Toronto International Film Festival premiere “The Fabelmans,” Paul Dano plays family man Burt Fabelman, in a part modeled after director Steven Spielberg’s own father Arnold. The role is a marked contrast to his most recent theatrical appearance in this year’s “The Batman,” where he portrayed a sadistic and terrifying version of comic book villain the Riddler. Speaking with Variety senior entertainment writer Angelique Jackson, Dano spoke about making the shift between the two very different characters.

I think he could score his 1st nomination cuz best supporting actor category seems a bit weak in terms of competition whoever I don't think he's winning cuz Ben Whishaw from Women talking has been getting rave reviews and same with Brendan Gleeson for the banshees of inisherim.

While I respect your opinion i don’t think he could’ve possibly been done better. It was honestly a breath of fresh air for the character not being a goofy nasally nerd that is usually seen as a laughing stock or just a nuisance to Batman who’s main motivation is just to prove that he’s better than him. To me they changed him from a comical petty villain to a scary revenge driven psychopath who actually did some heavy damage to Gotham.
