    My father was the engineer on the Freedom Train runs on the AGS. Both Birmingham to Chattanooga and Birmingham to Meridian. He put in 46 years on the AGS as a fireman and engineer. He ran the majority of the Heart of Dixie steam excursions to Chattanooga as well. Including the first several pulled by the 611. The Southern had merged with the Norfolk & Western to become the Norfolk Southern and the AGS had become The Crescent Division by the time he retired in April,1986.

      The AGS Was Part Of The Southern Railway's Crescent Division From 1968 To 1988 When It Became Part Of Norfolk Southern's Alabama Division.

    You do not know just how much this video means to me. I was 9 or 10 when this Train rolled through the southern tier of NY that summer. I was attending Bible Camp which had a large football field between the grounds and the Tracks. I remember all of us campers were in a bible story hour in this big barn. It had sliding doors that were open. I heard the steam whistle and was painfully restraining myself from taking off and running across the field to see the train.

    To chase the AFT up HWY 11...what a dream. Alas, I only saw the AFT the day they switched engines and was 2 years away from having a driver's license. Great footage!! Hat's off to your dad and his camera!!

      @thunderbird1921 Před 3 lety +1

      Those are actually the two engines I'd have haul it in 2026 (if they operate a 250 Freedom Train). Big Boy 4014 definitely deserves the honor if possible, the excursions of 2019 showed it can now travel nearly the whole western region safely and is one of America's most iconic machines. Unless they pick NKP 765 or another Reading steamer, N&W 611 is hands down the best choice for the eastern US.

      Vicki Beasley you’re thinking of one of the other AFT’s. The one in the video, 2101, is at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, damaged to the point of never running again.

      @PittsburghAndLakeErie9405 Před 2 lety +1

      @@XxZytecGamingxX it probably could eventually run again. It would just take a lot of time and money. Probably would have to get custom replacement parts built.
