You are watching and listening to a legend who sang before autotune. Karen Carpenter is considered the voice in the music world. 70 on 7 sirius/xm had her as the #1 voice just recently. Carpenters were the #1 selling american group in the 70's. Also best female drummer. Just a talent that left us at age 32 of Anorexia Nervosa.
Listen to these for a real thrill: This Masquerade, Solitaire, Rainy Days and Mondays, Close to You, We've only just Begun, and Goodbye to Love (just to mention a few)!! Goosebumps galore!
Karen was known as "one take Karen". She had the ability to read the music and perform the song flawlessly on the first take. The man singing harmony and playing keyboard in the video is her brother Richard. Richard is a brilliant arranger and knew how to show off Karen's voice at it's best.
This was an especially important quality in the 60s and 70s. One normally couldn't afford to waste a lot of studio time and (real magnetic) tape. It wasn't just autotune. Being able to have the consistency to get almost every take almost perfect was considered to be professional. This level of professionalism became less critical over the years as more tracks were available on the tapes, and even more so with the advent of digital studio recording and other technology including autotune and other post recording editing techniques, and the comparative availability of quality recording equipment so you now have Billie Eilish and her brother making hit music in their house's rec room with far better equipment available than anything the Carpenters could dream of.
Brother and sister duo Richard and Karen Carpenter were the best selling group of the 1970's. Karen's voice was unique and unmatched. She didn't have a long life but what a gift she left to the world.
No need to apologize brother, just enjoy the trip ahead. Richard and Karen blessed us with some wonderful and timeless MUSIC! 50 years later and her ANGELIC voice still often brings a tear to my eye. But seeing her behind a drum kit ALWAYS brings a smile to my face! Rest In Peace, Beautiful Girl!
There are many great singers out there, but there are few that can move you. Karen is one of those Artists like Elvis that when they opened their vocals to sing, something happened on the inside of your soul. ❤ Another one is gone too soon! 😢
Paul Williams wrote one of their songs called " We've Only Just Begun ". He also wrote all the soundtrack to the film " Bugsy Malone " and was in many films like " Smokey And The Bandit " - Battle For The Planet Of The Apes.
Sweet memories, my mom was a member of the official Carpenters fan club. Karen's voice reminds me of childhood. It wasn't Christmas until the Carpenters Christmas album was played. If you haven't heard Rainy Days and Mondays you should check it out, so beautiful.
You should check out when they performed this song on the Carol Burnett Show. She sang this song this well...AND PLAYED THE DRUMS, too!!! She took things up another notch with that performance!
If you are interested in an outstanding documentary on her life, I highly recommend watching "Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection". It includes a series of moving and insightful interviews with many of those who knew her best.

Karen’s mother usually told her she was fat..when she was a girl..she grew up with that in the back of her mind..I read she married the wrong guy..and I’ve gotta believe that..because Karen was beautiful..I’m just 3 years older than her..but any husband would be telling Karen..every day..honey, you’re perfect just the way you are..Karen went home, for a visit to see mom and dad one weekend..Saturday morning, she was found dead..and she weighed 60 lbs……I’m wondering what her mom was thinking standing at the gates of Heaven..
There will never be another Karen Carpenter, her vocals were great and such a wonderful talent

Legend had it, she recorded this song in one take, reading the lyrics off a napkin! NEVER MIND, she was only 21 years old at the time!

Amen to that, Sister!!!! You just said a mouthful there!
“ A Song For You” recorded by Karen is a great song to do next if you want. The studio version is best. Thank u.
Her voice and storytelling ability and interpretations of EVERY SONG is simply therapy for the soul...
@@golddredgewater Yes! It has that wonderful saxophone solo!
Her voice is so beautiful so pure. I love all your reactions you're so honest and you're right to the point.
- The "Carpenter sound" (instrumentation/vocals) is due to Richard Carpenter's superb arranging!
A brother and sister duo, their performances were perfect .Richard and Karen…simply the best in their day.
Loved Karen. Such a wonderful and distinctive voice with a wonderful lower register. Taken from us too soon.
Paul Williams wrote one of their songs called " We've Only Just Begun ". He also wrote all the soundtrack to the film " Bugsy Malone " and was in many films like " Smokey And The Bandit " - Battle For The Planet Of The Apes.
Thank you so much for doing another reaction of the Carpenters.

" We've only just begun" and "Rainy days and Mondays" should be next on your playlist for them! Perfection!❤
She's a Great drummer too😊😮😊😊
I actually won a singing contest singing this song 10,000 and a trip to Italy not too shabby
Outstanding! Yay you!
Way to go! Congratulations! This is not an easy song to sing. Deceivingly simple when Karen sings it, but challenging for the rest of us mere mortals.
- Karen was a drummer who happened to sing.
- In fact, she was the drummer in the jazz-oriented "Richard Carpenter Trio".
- Search this on CZcams.

No voice has ever matched hers. Ever. Pure. Angelic. Authentic. Richard’s arrangements brought out the best in them both.
Lots of great suggestions for more beautiful ballads, however, a lighter upbeat tune is Top of the world' & one of my favs
Keep goin with Karen!!!!!
Luther Vandross did a cover of this song!❤
