    If you watched my video about Jammin in the Style of... it was Bob Dylan! But it is no surprise that Hendrix was guessed by all... Dylan must have been a huge influence on Jimi, not least as he covered Dylan songs - All Along the Watchtower and Like A Rollin’ Stone! I didn’t quite consider that I had played in a Hendrix-y way really, I was fully thinking of Dylan type chord changes 🤷🏽 but that was fun!

    Paul Cochrane kindly responded to a question I asked of him on The Gear Page. Here's what he said: "The problem for me is some builders "DO" deny that I came up with a circuit they might be selling as their own. I can't stand to see in my opinion hyped claims of original designs only to see it's just a change from an audio taper to a lin taper, or a 10% change of a cap value. I get it though - mine is cheap and if they said what their pedal was based on they might not be able to get what they want for it. All these tweaks come down to pennies in parts costs - hard to see how somebody could ask $375 for a slightly tweaked $129 design. I don't claim to be any magic soundmaker, but toss me a bone, and don't take advantage, in my opinion, of players who don't know what's inside these things."

    I think one important aspect of the Jan Ray is the greater headroom (i.e. the amount of volume it has on tap) vs. the Timmy. Not that it justifies the price diff, but something that people should pay attention to.

    Even analog Mike said there's minimum circuit changes to it, so all their claims are BS at best. It's closer to the lovepedal amp11.
    Cloning is fine, Theivery and lying isn't.
    Also I read up somewhere Paul designed the Timmy with Marshalls in mind, and the modifications lovepedal did with the amp11 made it play better with American circuits which is the majority of pedal amps. Those are what the vemuram is "designed" after.

    Hi James. Great sounding overdrives, I really liked the tone in that video. I slightly prefer the Vemuram, there is a slight something in the background that I couldn’t get with the Timmy, I could hear it at around 22min of the video (settings were not the same at all on both pedals though). I see they are selling that Vemuram for 279£ at Thomann, might not be a too bad deal? Not sure to pull the trigger though as I just secure a PRS silver sky Lunar ice yesterday!

      @JamesOnGuitar  Před 3 lety

      Yeah, the Jan Ray just has the edge, at £279 I would say go for it! As other people have also said, the Jan Ray just has a little extra in it. The controls aren't set the same because the Timmy has different control types and its level control doesn't do anything until near the end of its range and the tone controls are cut controls. Congrats on the PRS - I can never make my mind up if I like them, but would love to try one out!

    Ultimately something is worth what someone will pay for it. If you like it then it’s worth it. Ultimately the circuit is the Timmy circuit with a few tiny changes. As someone who builds their own pedals the issue I have is with marketing spiel of ‘original and unique circuits’ and crazy descriptions of sounds. As purchasers the tendency is to hear what you have been told you will hear. Does it really matter? Probably not but it does make me cringe.

    Sometimes a Timmy fits and mixes into someone’s else’s pedal board amp guitar pickup selection stacking pedals etc. better than a Jan Ray vice versa…I’ve experienced with both pedals live and then hearing friends try out my pedal vice versa. So if the Jan Ray is indeed a Timmy clone I think it has nice quality parts and some custom tweaks to it like think custom shop if you will

The Jan Ray shares the same topology as the Timmy but has at least 13 component changes. You could say the Jan Ray is a modded (heavily) Timmy but anyone says they’re the same can’t read a schematic or understand how tweaks can sound quite different. The Timmy is more clear and transparent. The Jan Ray has transparent with just the right amount of mojo. The price is because it not mass produced and it comes from Japan. Things cost more. Many US pedal makers outsource production to All-pedals out of Kentucky. The Timmy Mini used SMD components and is robot made. I’d pay $300 for the Jan Ray over $200 for a US pedal
